Fear biting-new rescued dog.

i've got one of these so you have my sympathy. my trainer who is a "problem" dog specialist said that first i had to come to terms with the fact that there is no known "cure" for this. having said that she said that, among other things (socialization, obedience, etc.), the way for me to get a handle on the situation was to learn how to read his body language and to react accordingly and develop really, really good timing. it has been two years since he bit someone and he has become a really nice, sociable dog to humans and other dogs, but i still have my eye on him ALL the time. in retrospect all the time, effort and most of all commitment were more than worth it, so if you get those moments where you say to yourself, "am i getting anywhere here?", you probably are. i literally asked my husband one day, "when did he get to be such a nice dog, and where was i?" best of luck.

Kim,

One last thing, that aggressive board you tried to join...the moderator is known for being rather abrasive to many people. It wasn't personal towards you it's just her personality. Several people on another group I belong to have comaplined about her rude replies when they try to join.

Kim:

All I can add is "God bless you" for trying so hard to provide a stable and loving home for a dog who had been abused and therefore has some problems.

I understand why rescue groups have to be very concerned and avoid working with dogs with bite histories. However, you may find individuals who are very familiar with Aussies, rescue, and fear aggression who can offer advice from their experienced point of view.

Your work with this dog should show positive results, as you have already seen. And, as others have pointed out, you will always need to be observant and cautious, as you have shown yourself to be so far.

Bless you for becoming involved in the first place, for hanging in there and bringing this dog in your home, and for researching and trying to do your best to provide a good, stable, happy home situation for this abused and neglected dog.
