I can't believe the emergency vets wouldn't admit him. Water under the bridge now (I missed this earlier). I'm glad you are probably at the vet now. He may need stronger antibiotics if he has a resistant bug or back-to-back infections. But they'll know.

He sounds like every dog I've had with acute Ehrlichia. The head to one side thing is called ataxia (though I'm sure you know that). It's a neurological problem and can be accompanied in this disease in particular by seizure activity, nausea (from vertigo), and muscle wasting (noticable on the top of the head - ears don't stand right and skulls looks "sunken" above the eyes).

The good news is that if you find the right antibiotic to treat it, he WILL recover with the right supportive care. Consider having your vet show you how to administer subq fluids since the emergency vets are so uncooperative. He definitely could have benefited from that, as well as being ready to support him in case of seizure activity and making him more comfortable with pain meds. But the fluids at least are often 50% of the battle in acute care situations.

I've been sleeping all this time. I didn't get any sleep last night.

Boy has been sleeping all this time too.

It's time to give him his meds and feed him, so hopefully he's able to eat ok.

Thanks for all of the support. We were supposed to go camping this weekend and celebrate hubby's birthday. Maybe we'll camp out in the yard instead. Maybe even have a little campfire!

Hi Miztiki,

How is Boyden going?? I havnt been here for a while, and have just read this thread, very sad. I'm not really sure what your vet has had him checked for, but everything you are describing is exactly what I went through with my pup, the high tempertures, not eating, the holding the head funny, yelping, when he does walk he walks with a hunch back, but he didnt want to walk, he prefered to lay down and not move, he had the sadest look in his eyes. Rebel got a spinal tap and scan done as a breeder/friend/vet of mine suggested that it could be AutoImmune Meningitis and that is what it was. There are all different kinds of meningitis that dogs can get, when we knew what we were dealing with we put him on steriods which help stablize the problem, which could explain why Boyden feels a little better after a dose of it. If I were you I would talk to your vet, and get them to test for meningitis as soon as possible, as it can be life threating, I know someone who had an 8 year old dog pass away from it as their vet didnt know what was wrong. Please feel free to pm me if you need to talk or find out any further information or just post here. Im am not saying this is what Boyden has, I hope it isnt, but I just felt i should share my experience with you.

Hope all goes well.

Happy Birthday Mr Tiki! May you and your family find a sweet restful moment to forget troubles and reflect on what is wonderous and magical past and present. What better basis for a renewed faith that such spirit will still escort our tomorrow and the next?

I just read this, Miz. I am thinking of you and Boy. I feel like I know him, and I really hope he is feeling better. You have been through so much recently with him, and it just breaks my heart. Please give him a gentle hug from me.
