Purpose-bred dogs

Another perspective on breeding for function vs. breeding for form, and the role the show ring has in ruining useful breeds of dogs.

I thought this would be particularly interesting given what I consider the disturbing support for breed-specific legislation against pit bulls that was recently posted on these boards.

Incidentally, this is the kennel that produced Bandog Dread, the truly exceptional working Pit Bull who was apparently responsible for the fact that ASCA trials are no longer open to "non-herding" breeds -- as he earned a High in Trial or two which was a bit embarrassing to the "herding dogs."

I love disciplined Bull Terriers. The working Bull Terrier is just as impressive as a working BC in its own way.

I recommend reading the tales of "Jock of the Bushveld", a classic tale of a working Bull Terrier during the Gold Rush in South Africa. Jock lived a fascinating life, bringing down kudu, wildebeeste, and even crocodiles!

Jock was prized for his balance of obedience and aggression. Undisciplined dogs were usually shot because they would steal food, or ruin the hunt by closing in before commanded to do so.

I'd hate to think what Jock would have done with sheep!
