Sue R Posted August 4, 2005 Report Share Posted August 4, 2005 The newly-formed Buckeye Cow Dog Association, Inc., presented its first USBCHA and LSCDF sanctioned two-day, two-trial Hourglass Trial on July 30 and 31. Held at the beautiful Rafter L Bar belonging to Lavelle Farms, near Athens OH, it was an indoor arena trial using 600-700# cattle that attracted 48 entries on Saturday and 44 entries on Sunday. Competitors came from states including Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and West Virginia. The competitor list included Bill Reed and Shep, the 2005 National Cattledog Champion, as well as nationally-known handlers Anita Young and Lyle Lad. Border Collies were the majority of competing dogs; however, Hangin' Tree Cowdogs, Australian Shepherds, and Australian Cattle Dogs were also represented. The trial was time-and-points. The 120' x 200' indoor arena featured seven obstacles that were used in each class, Open, Ranch, Nursery, and Novice as well as the Horseback class where the handler directed his/her dog from horseback. Each handler/dog team had three head of stock to manuever through the seven obstacles, with five points for each head that completed each obstacle in the eight minutes allowed. On Saturday, all classes used the same course. The stock came in at the head of the arena but these cattle knew that the exhaust was along the right-hand wall of the arena and headed straight for the exhaust gate. Each dog had to "collect" the stock there and move them past the final pen obstacle and to the head of the arena to begin the course at obstacle #1 (two poles that provided a "fetch gate"). From there, the stock had to proceed through #2, a free-standing Y-chute near the exhaust, with a cross-panel at the foot of the chute to make it a little more "challenging". All three head had to round a cone (#3)in the lower right corner of the arena as the handler went ahead to open the gate on a free-standing pen (#4), and direct the dog to move the stock into that pen. The handler opened the gate at the other end of this pen and the dog brought the stock to the T-chute along the left wall of the arena, which was obstacle #5. Quick work was required of both handler and dog here as the stock entered the top of the T but had to exit out the bottom leg of the T. The obstacle that presented the most difficulty to gain full points was #6 - a pair of telephone poles lying parallel on the ground, about 4' apart, forming a wall-less chute. The final obstacle (#7) was another free-standing pen . All classes used the same obstacles - the Open class handler's post area was furthest from the beginning of the course and the handler's dog had to place all three head past the line of obstacle #3 before leaving the post to open the gate of obstacle #4. The handler's post for Ranch and Nursery was further up the arena. Handlers in the Novice class could leave the post with the dog and some chose to place themselves and their dog near the exhaust gate to begin their run. The Saturday Horseback class used the Ranch handler's post position. Bill Reed and Shep demonstrated the style and ability that won them the 2005 National Cattledog Finals - Bill's handling was calm, quiet, and assured and Shep embodied controlled, confident power. This was a team that won on the large scale of the Finals and won on the small and precise scale of an indoor arena. What an honor for less-experienced handlers to be able to watch this team in action! On Sunday, the course was reversed with just a few changes. Cattle came down through the fetch poles (#1) and along the left through a set of parallel panels with no T this time (#2) to the "in and out" pen (#3). After this pen, the cattle were pulled back through two barrels at the lower right end of the arena (#4) and on through the Y-chute without the perpendicular panel at the end (#5). The telephone poles on the ground were narrowed up for the Open class and were obstacle #6, followed by the final free-standing pen now in the upper left corner (#7). Sunday's horseback class used five head rather than three per run and the handler on horseback stayed at the Open handler's line until the fetch was completed. The time line occurred when all five were penned and the gate closed. At this point, the handler on horseback had to enter the pen, sort out three head with or without the aid of the dog, close the gate (leaving two head shut in the pen), and proceed through the remaining six obstacles in reverse order! The local alumni chapter of the Federal-Hocking FFA provided a tasty and economical lunch each day for competitors and spectators alike. Sue R Posted August 5, 2005 Author Report Share Posted August 5, 2005 Gee, Julie, thanks! I was very pleased with Celt because he did some nice work. It was not an easy course and the cattle were not "parade" cattle. As usual, it was my mistake(s) that cost us points and placing (at the final pen, no less). I had a fun day and really enjoyed seeing some good dog and stock handling. Maybe I could see you there sometime - they are planning a fall or winter series, I think. How about it?
