Rave
A friend's BC is almost in renal failure, and it appears to be from antifreeze poisoning. They don't have antifreeze and don't believe the dog escaped and got into any. Is there anything that mimics AF poisoning, but is really something else?? BUN is 5x higher than normal. I've already passed on to her that she can do an Ultrasound to confirm AF poisoning (still waiting to hear back from her on that). Thanks for any help! MrSnappy
When my dog got Lepto last year, they suspected anti-freeze posioning initially. My vet said it is only detectable in the first 48 hours or something because then it cyrstalizes and gets passed in the urine. By then the damage is done. However, they were practically certain that he had antifreeze poisoning, until we did the Lepto titres. RDM
Rave
Thanks RDM, I'll pass that along. It's hard sitting here hundreds of miles away and not knowing what's going on with the dog.
Post and Rail
Addison's Disease. We had a pup diagnosed with antifreeze poisoning and we knew she hadn't been near any antifreeze. It turned out to be Addison's.
Rave
Would either of these things also cause an extremely high BUN?
MrSnappy
A really high BUN can be because the dog is dehydrated, which would not be abnormal in a dog with kidney failure. RDM
Post and Rail
I believe Addison's will. Addison's is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms can mimic so many other problems. Just something to look into if your friends are confident their dog wasn't exposted to AF.
Rave
Thank you, I'll pass it on. I'm hopeful her vet has considered all these things, but she does live in the middle of nowhere...
2 Devils
Grrrr... it is very frustrating as Laura says. The doggie is one of my teammates and there is nothing I can do 3 states away. Let's hope the country doc can figure it out in time and treat the problem. Any more ideas?
