adadrian Posted January 5, 2019 Report Share Posted January 5, 2019 Hey guys so after we treated our pups this summer for fleas we gave her the usual flea treatment and the usual dog flea shampoo we always use. She started biting her self nibbling and as you can see she’s losing hair. Her breath is fine her skin looks and feels normal we can’t find a way to stop her biting her self nibbling. I've had a couple dogs who were extremely sensitive to certain products that didn't bother the others at all. And any allergist will tell you that allergies and sensitivities can develop at any time, even to things that had never caused them before. So the first thing I have to ask is are you still using either (or both) of these products? If you are, then stop them immediately. Then I would give her a bath with a shampoo designed for skin problems. You might even want to ask your vet for a recommendation for a medicated shampoo. And though it does sound like this is a reaction to the flea products, you may want to take her to the vet to rule out another cause that you haven't suspected. urge to herd Posted January 6, 2019 Report Share Posted January 6, 2019 You might ask if your vet will do a skin scraping for mange, if her fur doesn't grow back. The area is not a typical area for mange, but it's something to consider. Was her skin reddened, or even blistered? In humans, that type of allergy tends to leave visible changes. Another thing to consider is mites. Oooooh, the things we don't know about until we need a specialist. There's also the possibility that she's a bit OCD and having started itching is simply continuing the activity. Good luck! aschlemm Posted January 7, 2019 Report Share Posted January 7, 2019 I wouldn't use either the flea shampoo or the flea treatment on her again. I also agree with bathing her in a cleansing shampoo, like an oatmeal based shampoo. I'd also give her benadryl (dose is 1mg per pound, twice daily. It's an antihistamine.) until she stops itching and I'd give her extra attention, some new toys and extra activity. I've had problems breaking "the itch habit" with my dogs also.
