Parker&Laika
how many borders out there have double hind dewclaws? Parkers are attached by the bone, I was told it meant great herding lines...he doesn't herd though. the never get tangled or caught on anything. GentleLake
I suspect this is just an old wives' tale. I've never had a purebred border collie that had rear dewclaws, and some were very well bred working dogs. Not a definitive sampling to be sure, but I think more are born without rear dewclaws than are born with them, even singles. Double are pretty unusual AFAIK. NCStarkey
I have had Border Collies since 1971 and have participated in several activities where numerous Border Collies were present. I have seen some Border Collies with single rear dew claws, however, I have never seen double rear dew claws on a purebred Border Collie. Double rear dew claws are typical for Great Pyrenees dogs, and I have seen some Border Collie x Great Pyrenees crossbreds (this cross sometimes happens on farms where Border Collies are used for flock management and Great Pyrenees are used for flock protection). If your dog is a purebred Border Collie, he is an unusual one, indeed.
Parker&Laika
yep he is pure as a purebred is lol. have papers and everything. everyone says he is the best bc they have met. great off switch, never destructive, just lives to fetch and allows me to ask him to do his tricks. Riika
Rear dewclaws have nothing to do with herding lines. I had one with double rear dewclaws that I had removed because they were so floppy. I've heard of several other BCs with double rear dewclaws on various FB groups. Parker&Laika
yea I figured that it was a myth. he has ones that are attached by the bone and he looks like he has mittens, I love it.
Journey
I had a nice male, he too had double rear dews. Took them off right away. It wasn't a pleasant surgery..his were not attached though.
Liz P
I’ve produced at least 10 pups with rear and double rear dew claws plus one polydactyl pup. They happen in some lines. I generally remove the non articulated and double rear dews at 2 days old.
Wendy N
We rescued a border collie puppy ( with papers) who has back dew claws on both rear legs and a double dew claw on this rear right leg! Doesn’t seem to bother him!
