At what age are rams considered old enough to service a few ewes? (5 now and hope to be adding 10 more asap). And how do you folks in the South schedule your lambing season?? South Dakota Tracy Posted June 9, 2002 Report Share Posted June 9, 2002 We have used rams as young as 6 mo. but this creates more than one problem. 1. prob is they are hit and miss. So all lambs are not born within a few weeks of each other. #2 I find that it really makes them mean fast. I dont know what type of sheep you have, I only have experience with sufolks and hamps. Bill Fosher Posted June 10, 2002 Report Share Posted June 10, 2002 Age of fertility varies greatly by breed. Suffolks and Hampshires would be later than Finnsheep or even Dorsets. I have used a Finnsheep ram lamb that was four months old 25 ewes with okay results -- it took him about four weeks to cover all the ewes.
