Are BC mixes capable of herding? Training a Border Collie/Poodle mix?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine couldn't keep the dog due to family issues, which I won't mention on this forum(for privacy).

Bindy is BC mix, I've started agility foundation with her, the trainer is quite impressed on how fast her ability to learn is. While I might be purchasing a Purebred BC from a stock-dog breeder, within the next year or so. I'm quite interested in training Bindy to herd sheep.

I have few question:

• Where should I start training for herding?

• Where in SE Wisconsin could I find a stock-dog handler/trainer?

• Any recommend books or websites(beside this one)?

Thanks, & sorry for my lack of knowledge on stock dog training.

Just ask if you want more information, I'll be happy to provide you with more, if need

Schaferhunde -- I inadvertently posted my reply in this "expert", section dedicated exclusively to a designated top trainer. That person is not me. So, I deleted it. I will PM you with my response. Sometimes the experts are busy with trialing and training, so be patient and he/she will get back to you. -- TEC

You shouldn't start training for herding. It is hard enough to make a good working dog out of a well bred Border Collie. A mix is a nix. You will be tormenting sheep with a recreational chaser, which has nothing to do with stock management. So do not take your mix breed "herding". Buy a good Border Collie and try herding with it.

I do not know who in South East Wisconsin can help you. Any one on the list know of someone?

I still like "A Way of Life," by Glyn Jones. That book will walk you through it. I bet Bindy is a nice dog and that she will be a clever Agility player. But use your Border Collie on the sheep

Thanks, I won't be doing herding with Bindy, I'll stick with agility.
