*eyeroll* Oh please. That video lost any semblance of credibility when it decided that HSUS trying to shut down "pet providers" (aka PUPPY MILLS, people) in Missouri (the American capital of the large scale mill operation) was a bad thing.

 

Anti-HSUS propaganda is always as dramatic and extreme as the HSUS policies their detractors are calling dramatic and extreme. I find that funny as hell.

Emphasis mine. You just ruled out about 75% of the public with that statement. If you like your market feedback to happen at geologic time scales you can rely on educating people who don't read, listen or, for the most part, think. Good luck with that. You're also relying on corporate media to interrupt "dancing with the Stars" or other such drivel, to get the word out. Not gonna happen.

Seen any anti puppy mill advertisements lately that weren't paid for by HSUS, PETA or some other advocacy group? Otherwise, how would this "education" take place. Who will pay for it?

We live in a world of poor quality choices. One only has to look at the political landscape to see a glaring example. Unfortunately, the pragmatic pursuit of value laden goals often dictates selecting one of these bad choices (while judiciously holding your nose) because, to do otherwise, the damage would be far worse than not choosing at all.

To be clear, I don’t see the HSUS as the extreme bogyman that it is being painted as by opposition groups. This type of demonization goes on all the time and is used, unfortunately, as a substitute for rational thought. It’s hard to give full throated opposition to a group that does some good. It’s easier just to assign some ugly ulterior agenda to them so that you can view any good they do as some sort of camouflage. It’s always easier to think in black and white. Complexity and subtle coloration are not tolerated well by those that don’t like to think.

As I asked in my last post: what is the viable alternative to the HSUS spearheading the anti puppy mill legislation? You say education is the answer and again I ask; who will pay for it? As soon as some rational, centrist group picks up the challenge in a way that assures true puppy mills cease to exist and legitimate breeders are protected, I’ll be on board. But as I indicated, private sector (market) corrections often proceed at a glacial pace, and often those corrections are hindered by those who stand to lose money if the correction takes. Think Ford Pinto.

The HSUS advertises itself as an organization that rescues animals and it doesn't. It spends a lot of money raising money that goes to pay big saleries and huge pensions. The little bit of good it does can't come close to the damage it does by fooling people into thinking they are helping pets that need rescued. The consequence of this is that organizations like the ASPCA and animal rescues can't get the funds they need. I personally think the HSUS should be investigated for fraud.

This is public information--and the numbers in the video are accurate. However, as President of my own (small) non-profit, and accustomed to reviewing and preparing 990's, it doesn't appear on the face of it that they are doing too badly in terms of their expenditures in particular categories as a percent of revenue. Whether or not you personally agree with their agenda is another thing entirely.

Alaskan Congressman Don Young refused an award this evening from The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the Humane Society Legislative Fund that would have honored his work for animals in 2010. While capitalizing on the good work of local humane societies that shelter, spay, and neuter animals, the HSUS does not own, operate, or directly control a single animal shelter in our country, despite a budget of well over $100 million.

 

“HSUS are hypocrites, plain and simple, and I will not join them by accepting this award,” said Rep. Young. “Local animal shelters and humane societies do excellent work by caring for neglected and homeless animals, and through their spaying and neutering programs. This organization, however, has absolutely nothing to do with animal welfare. Instead they prey on the emotions of big-hearted Americans. They flash images of abused animals on our television screens to raise money that will eventually go to pay their salaries and pensions, not to helping better the lives of these animals.”

 

“They run anti-hunting and anti-trapping campaigns and are of the same cloth as PETA and other extremist organizations. I can only guess that I was to receive this award due to my support of the Wildlife Without Borders program, which develops wildlife management and conservation efforts to maintain global species diversity. I expect the H$U$ will vet its award recipients more carefully in the future so someone doesn't turn around and bite them in the butt with brutal honesty.

A society of poor choices......that may be the case if you are looking for one entity to cover everything. But then again, they tell me you can't expect that in one person (as in a husband for example) either.

Personally, there is no way in this world that I would give any of my pennies to a group like them even if others have their own problems. I at that point will choose to stay local and not support any of he so called big ones.

That website is the work of the Center for Consumer Freedom. You might want to Google that group and the entities behind it. Tyson and Monsanto are two of their donors;startup funding for the organization came from Philip Morris.

Personally, I don't believe anything that's on the humanewatch.org website.

 

I don't care for HSUS, but IMO their agenda is far from as radical as many people want to make it seem.

 

And for Cong. Young to even mention 'preservation' strikes me as bitterly ironic, since IIRC he's the guy who keeps introducing bills that would allow drilling in the ANWR.
