Hotchkiss Sheep Camp SDT report

Last weekend, on May 7-9, 2010, Richard Bailey hosted the Seventh Annual Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Sheepdog Trial. The trial setting, in the beautiful North Fork Valley of Colorado’s western slope, is among the most breath-taking in the country, and the sunny, festive atmosphere could not be beat. There was a nice, steady crowd of onlookers watching the action, visiting the vendors’ booths, and exploring the many authentic sheep camps set up adjacent to the field. The sheep, predominantly Columbian range ewes, were even and tough. Kevin Bailey, of Belle Plaine, MN, was the judge. Four classes were offered: open, pro-novice, nursery, and novice-novice. On Sunday, the open class ran eight head, shedding off four after the drive and then penning the remaining four. For fun, on Friday evening, trialers competed in a brace competition and a silent gather. The dogs were impressive, and a good time was had by all.
