Puppy growth rate

Idle thoughts while watching my two monsters romp through the house...

Just curious if anyone here has any thoughts to the size of pups

compared to their eventual adult size. I read a couple of different

theories on the subject. The first said that an adult dog's weight will

be basically double of what the pup weighs at 4 months old.

The second that I found said that a pup is 80% full size at 9 months.

Using the first scenario, that would put my pup at over 50 pounds

when reaching adulthood.

Using the second, granted he's only 7 1/2 months now, he would end up

about 44 - 45 pounds.

I guess I was just wondering if anyone kept closer records than I have.

Thanks for any input.

When Jedi was 6 mo. old he was 32 lbs. and now at 2 yrs. old he's 47 lbs. That's 68%, so he probably was about 80% at 9 mo.

Hope that helps.

Mal came home at 4 months and was 12 pounds. With the Adult = 4 mo x 2 theory, he should now be 24 pounds. In reality, he is just over a year and 30 pounds and definitly not overweight. In my opinion, there is no cut and dry equation to predict adult weight because of build structure. Mal was fairly average at 4 mo, but now he is stockier and just has a thicker build, I'm not saying he's a tank however. His sister is fairly light on her feet and I think she was 10 lbs at 4 mo and 20 now (she's tiny), so that formula did work for her.

Our vet says her best guesstimate is 1/2 full weight at 4mo unless the dog is of a giant breed.

I've kept records of Kes' growth so far and he's 9mo now. By his 4mo size (18lbs) he would be 36lbs full grown, but by the 80% figure at 9mo he'd be 41lbs full grown. Give us about 9 more months and i'll tell you which was most accurate.

Nothing's fool proof though - Ziva was 26.2lbs at 5.5mo and at 2.5 years now she's 24.4lbs! She was a pudgy puppy. :D

Alex was 13 lbs at 4 months old and he has been 30-32 lbs since he was full grown. So, that's a little bit more than double his 4 month weight. I think doubling the 4 month weight, +/- a few lbs is probably a good indicator. It has been with my three dogs.

Wick was a very steady grower, 1 pound a week until about 20 weeks. At 16 weeks (yes I know that's not 4 months but it's what I remember b/c her weight was her age in weeks while she grew), she was 16 pounds and her final weight is about double that (30). All of these things are simply rules of thumb though, not meant to be exact.
