IronHorse
Both of my female BCs have 1 blue eye and with each of them it is the left eye that is blue. I have seen quite a few BCs as well as Aussies that have both eyes blue or greenish or a combination of the two. My question is this; Of those of you who have had experince with a dog that has just one "colored" eye (blue/green)has it been or is it the left or right eye that is colored? Someone told me today that it was Predominantly the left eye that will be the "colored" eye. I could not really debate this with the guy because as I sat there and thought of all the dogs I knew that had one "colored" eye it has been the left eye. Anyway I am curious to know how many of you have had experince with dogs who had or have a "colored" right eye.
pearls pop
Pearls right eye is blue, left is brown. actually had another person say yesterday that Pearl must be part husky because of her blue eye.
Kat's Dogs
Duchess had her left eye blue: I have never seen a blue/green eye(s) - anyone have pics of that? I have seen (through the internet) a ton of BCs with one blue eye. From what I have seen, there are just as many blue left eyes as right. Jo&Tex
Lokis eyes are both ice blue with very striking erratic starburst pupils. People often make the assumption that he is the blind dog of the pair.
Rebecca, Irena Farm
My Jen dog had a littermate with one blue eye. Right eye. It's odd how many people think blue eyed dogs must have vision problems. I had a rescue Aussie with gorgeous mostly blue eyes (marbled with a touch of brown) and I'd get the question, "Can he see OK"? I dunno, are blue eyed humans necessarily visually impaired? Allie+Tess&Kipp
Not a dog, but... My old pony has a blue eye. It is the right one. Allie + Tess & Kipp http://weebordercollie.com
Kat's Dogs
I think I might know why people think that dogs with blue eyes are blind (everyone asked that about Duchess too). When you test their eyes (the testing a lot of people do before breeding - the name is escaping me at the moment) you can't test a blue-eyed pup. A friend of mine with a corgi (blue eyes) told me that because of the blue, they can't test her dog's eyes. so they can't certify it because of that. I think that is right anyway. But the point was, maybe because of this, word got around to the common dog owner that dogs with blue eyes have vision problems. BTW, do any of you know the old myth? It was said that a border collie with one blue/one brown eye was the best worker because the blue eyes was for "far away" vision and the brown eye was for "close" vision. Thought that was interestin'.
Dixie_Girl
I think there may be as much folk lore on eye color as there is for coat color! But it would be interresting to know what the % of left vs. right on the two colored eyed dogs.
iluvlucy
could it be that dogs like people may be right or left"handed"? just a thought. yes kat i've seen that on one of the border collie info sights. i too thought it was interesting
WWBC
There is no problem with getting blue eyed dogs CERF(eye test)tested, even as puppies. They can be tested just like dogs with "normal" colored eyes. Vets not familiar with blue eyed dogs and the lack of pigment in the eye might not be comfortable examining them, but the specialists that do CERFs have no problem with it. border_collie_crazy
could it be that dogs like people may be right or left"handed"? just a thoughtthey are, thats one thing you learn very quickley in flyball, there are 2 or 3 holes in the box, one on the left, one on the right and one in the middle(usually for the teeny dogs) some dogs naturally go left, its easy for them, and when you try to make them turn right they miss the ball and slow down and have a difficult time in general. as for the left eye thing, well you could say the same for split faces, almost every split face BC I have ever seen(aside from Rune and a few others) have the white half of there face on the right. Columbia MO
Hi all, I've always wondered this too! To add to the conversation... My youngest BC is a split face with the white side on the right. His great-grandfather looked exactly like him except that his left eye was blue. So both these dogs match the hypothesis of "most blue eyes on the left," "most split faces on the right." Columbia, MO
MrSnappy
Mr. Woo has one blue, one brown. The blue is on the left! RDM
dsm
Here's Indy... right eye blue, split face left. I've seen several dogs with his blue eye/split face configuration...
Columbia MO
Hey, That brings up a related point. The split faces that I've seen with blue eyes, always have the blue eye on the "colored" side, and not on the "white" side of the face. I just went to the Border Collie Museum to look at their photos. Of the split faced dogs that have just ONE blue eye, it looks like the ones with that eye on the "colored" side outweigh the ones with the blue eye on the "white" side by about 2:1.
