painted_ponies
Columbia, MO - Y'know, I'd sort of forgotten about de-barking as an alternative. Heck, if it's that or give up the dog, I don't think it's a bad idea. When I was a child one of my Sunday School teachers was a Rough Collie breeder, and she had every single one of her dogs de-barked. I remember her kennels sounding like a garage full of cars with dead batteries trying to start. Later, when I grew up and started showing dogs, I noticed lots of Rough Collies and lots of Norwegian Elkhounds were de-barked, particularly by people who had lots of them. I wasn't aware it was considered cruel.
shelb'smum
I had a BCxGSD mix Abandonded at my apartment when his owner moved out. he needed a bark coller. it was a must, because he had been coddled so much while she had him, he wasn't used to being left alone. he got plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. but would bark for hours upon end while I was at work. this barking nearly got us kicked out of our apartments!!! we used a viberation/sound sensitive shock coller and it worked wonders. and about after 3 months he no longer needed to wear it. He would bark outside and at the park but he no longer bark if left alone!

I read each one of them and found tremendous value. I will weigh my options over the next few days and go from there. I really appreciate your help and advice.
