Looking for Rescue

Recommended Posts

Looking for border collie rescue in eastern Pennsylvania.

Middle aged couple, very active- semi-retired, that hike, jog, enjoy the outdoors.

They are previous owners of border collies, recently loosing their 16 year old.

They were turned down by Glen Highland Farms because of having a 4 foot fence, and having grandchildren visit on weekends.

They do have their name in at two shelters.

I searched on-line for rescues in this area and couldn't find any.

Any Rescues in this area?

Thank-you!

You may want to check New England Border Collie Rescue at http://www.nebcr.org/Available_Border_Collies.html to see if you find the right match. There are a few dogs listed that may fit your criteria. Don't forget to check the courtesy listing page as well. Another option might be Midatlantic Border Collie Rescue at www.mabcr.org. Good luck with your search!

Try Friends of Pep. Not sure where in PA they are though. I understand about having a hard time finding a rescue. I really think some are just a bit too picky, but do understand why. Definately type in your zip/border collie into petfinder. I'm sure you won't be lacking on pups.

They did contact several rescues, petfinder, - no one got back to them - except Glen Highland Farm.

They were extremely let down with their experience with rescue. - They were told the 4 foot fence needed

to be 5 foot, and their grandchildren that come to visit, are a risk.

They have a full acre fenced and live near wooded trails that they hike each day.

There's also a pond to swim, the couple is very well to do...and gave the best possible care to past border collies...

I did explain that rescues have their rules. I do think sometimes rules need to be bent a little....

because this is a wonderful home!

They are going to Virginia on Saturday - tomorrow, to look at a pup that someone backed out of.

I'm somewhat familiar with the lines.

Thanks for the replies...

i recently began working with great lakes bcr and just adopted out my first foster! woohoo! i am sad to hear that a rescue did not approve them...there are some bc's that obviously need higher than a four foot fence and aren't good with kids...but there are many in rescue that would be just fine under these 'conditions'...

to me...this is laziness on the rescue's part...not knowing the dogs, and not visiting the homes...

a good fit does not always require a 5 foot fence...! mho of course....

please check out greatlakesbcrescue.org...a little out of your area, but we just got a couple pups into foster care that are soooo sweet...!

We don't have the whole story here. There may be a number of reasons why this home was not considered an appropriate match for any of the dogs in rescue at this time.

That said, they could try Mid Atlantic Border Collie Rescue, which covers their area.

You are wrong, that was the whole story. When interviewed, they were told 4 foot fence was not acceptable. Small children coming to visit was not acceptable.

If you look at their qualification criteria for adoption, you will see small children ( under 7 ) are no longer "willing to risk" to adopters. The conversation didn't progress much further, even though they offered many references, home evaluation, whatever rescue wanted they were willing to cooperate.

They have their rules, and they stick to them.

Thank -you to all the people that sent PM's, much appreciated. Hope I responded to all.

They will have a dog soon....

Yep, their application form makes that pretty clear. I wouldn't qualify either.

I don't think I'd qualify either. My yard is too small, even though I have a park 2 doors down. I have Grandkids under 7 over from time to time. Wow- that would be awful for a dog to have a kid to play with- LOL. I got my first BC when my youngest was 8 and she did EVERYTHING with his friends. I couldn't think of a better home. At 25, he had to deliver he ashes to me. We were both in tears. Where we a bad home? 17 1/2 years of pure joy for this dog- I believe NOT. Now I have 2 BC's with Grandkids ages 1 year to 6 years. Do they love them- most the time. Have the dogs ever thought about hurting them? Not ever- that's what "proper supervision is". I guess I could never adopt a dog. Sometimes, that's why it is easier to go "BUY" a puppy. Such a shame!!!!

Unless you were trying to buy from a breeder who had a rule about fence heights and the ages of visiting children in the home and you didn't meet their criteria either. Of course this happens much more rarely because there are more good rescues than there are good breeders; and rescues are, as a general rule, more concerned with the dog's placement than the money they get in exchange for the dog, so it would be much harder to find a breeder who wouldn't toss aside any restriction they had if the price was right.

Let me bust out that broken record once again - it's the rescue's dogs, and the rescue can make any restrictions it wants on how it places the dogs. GHF doesn't seem to have any problem finding homes for the multitude of border collies it assists every year, so it must work for them. Whether that works for YOU is 100% irrelevant. There will always be another rescue to adopt from with different rules (I don't have rules like that, for example) if adopting is an important ethical consideration for you. Or a shelter, or a private rehome or any myriad of options. I doubt very much GHF is the ONLY source for getting a second hand border collie in that entire corner of the world.

To be fair, too, somewhere in the Glen Highland Farm site they do mention that inground electric fences are a good match for some of their dogs - so they must have a more moderate approach to fencing somewhere along the line. (I know the application says 5 feet, but I know I've also seen the other type of fencing described somewhere on the site.)

I do agree that it sometimes feels tough to "qualify" with a rescue group. I'm not sure I would, because I work.

On the other hand, I walked into the shelter and walked out with Buddy about 10 minutes later. No one really checked my references. I even forgot to pay the adoption fee, and had to mail it along later. They were overwhelmed with dogs and very busy on a June Saturday, and I think they were happy that someone would take poor Buddy, who was hiding and very fearful. ::Sigh::

I just love Jewel at NEBCR - http://www.nebcr.org/closeups/Jewel02.html

I lost my senior border collie that I adopted from Border Collie Rescue of Northern California 4 years ago, on March 7, 2009, (he was 15 - 17 years old) and she really really reminds me of him.

My wife and I had been approved by a couple of rescue groups for a dog and they then backed out or just gave the dog to someone else. We were so frustrated that we gave up on rescue groups. By chance a BC was dumped at the township shelter we volunteer at. He was abused, emaciated and had tapeworms. He is still aggressive toward men. We continue to have him trained by a BC specialist. Our two acres of property border hundreds of acres of state watershed and I am in the woods with him every day after school. I have him in "doggie day care" twice a week for socialization. My point is we provide a wonderful home for him. He is treated like a king and returns it in kind to me. We were refused by rescue groups and we have given him a wonderful life. I'm looking for another rescue and anticipate the same treatment. I appreciate what others have gone through and in many cases I think people in these groups have a problem letting go.

I am sorry you had a bad experience with rescue groups. However, if you go online and watch most rescue groups over time, you will see that they do adopt their dogs out (and speaking for NEBCR, we are THRILLED when our foster dogs find the right homes). Given your application was approved by the rescues, it indicates that they did think you could provide a good home. I am not familiar with your situation, but my guess is that they just did not feel that the dogs you were looking at were a right match. I am glad you ended up finding the right dog after all!
