kelpiegirl
DUMB question- what is the typical length of outrun in an open course? Thanks Julie
Pipedream Farm
Julie, Whatever the field/time will allow: about 300 yds and up. Mark
Firchow
The shortest I've seen was around 300 yards and the longest was 800 or so. Typically I'd say 500 - 650.
Pipedream Farm
Glenn, As I expected the average length varies by region based upon the size of the fields in that region. Mark
kelpiegirl
I watched a trial this weekend- 400 yd outrun. I barely saw the sheep. Can you use binoculars? Julie
Firchow
I'm sure that's the case. I haven't trialed out East. Outrun length can sometimes be unimportant, too. One of our best trials out here has a short outrun but it's in sagebrush and cactus on yearlings fresh off the mountain. It's about all I'd want in that scenario. http://sheepfestival.net/mediagallery/medi...070408221420275
cgt
Outrun length can sometimes be unimportant, too. Good point, Glenn. While the BIG outruns are always fun and challenging. Sometimes the challenge is not the course, but the sheep. At the St. Patrick's Day Trial in Heppner, Oregon the course is quite small. I guess maybe a 300 yard outrun, if that. A simple, flat hay field. The drive is not that big either. But, on the first day this year, less than half of the 50 dogs got a score! And there were some really nice dogs there. That trial is a blast. charlie
Firchow
Sometimes the challenge is not the course, but the sheep. You know the sheep are tough when the good natured betting under the tent is "score or no score?"
Wendy V
Why do men always say that length doesn't really matter?
cgt
Why do men always say that length doesn't really matter? Yikes. This could lead to one of those uncomfortable silences.

kelpiegirl
Is this the part where I repeat "Can I use binoculars?" Julie
Firchow
In both cases the answer is that there may be no rule against it but it would be frowned-upon.
