Our 7 month old BC does not like to see me working. While normally a quiet well behaved pup, his response to doing simple chores is out of character. Raking, sweeping, drilling, or moving equipment around elicit aggressive barking and attacks on tools. He can be anywhere in the yard when I use my cordless drill and he will come running/barking to put an end to it. The same with raking or sweeping where he attacks the tool. He will attack the wheels of stationary tools when i move them. Could this be a jealousy/attention issue? A herding instinct coming out?

So even though my trainer offers to rent sheep for us to work between lessons I keep asking myself how I can get more time on sheep, we live in San Diego county California and there are plenty of people with sheep in the area but would it be rude to just ask them? I have also thought about just talking to ad posters on craigslist of people looking to sell sheep in hopes of networking out some possible work for us to go do, the experience for my girl would be payment enough. Thoughts or advice?

This is my first post on this forum. Great website! We are very excited to be getting our first border collie pup in a couple of weeks (she's about five weeks old now) but my research has thrown up conflicting advice on what to do. As I child we had kelpies and, if I remember correctly, they spent their first nights in the laundry before sleeping in or outside when they were older. I see a lot about crating pups, but not really sure what this means in terms of how long you crate them and to what age. To be honest, I don't really like the thought of her being stuck in a box. Other people have suggested the pup goes straight outside to her (open) kennel at night so she gets used to it. She sleeps outside in a big open kennel with a chicken wire pen around it at the farm she lives at now so she's used to that, but she's with her brothers and sisters. The kennel my husband built it actually probably a bit big for how she will be as a fully-grown dog so it may dwarf her! If anyone can shed some light on the pros and cons of both and how they personally dealt with their new puppy it would be greatly appreciated. I am also interesting to hear what people think about leaving her outside when we go to work. Bad idea? Good idea if she has a pen around her kennel for now like her farm environment? Or allow her to roam freely in the garden to get some stimulation and exercise, and start to feel at home. Is there anything I should know that might maake border collies more difficult to deal with than kelpies in terms of their development and level of maintenance? Any advice you have would be most appreciated!

My first dog was strictly indoors. Old owners spoiled the dog. Shes now a huge trouble to get home to and let out before she pees everywhere, and that's every couple hours. And could never be boarded, crated, left alone in any pen without chewing or whining, or digging. The works. Im planning on having my next dog left outdoors in a kennel run while I am at work. and so hes free to use bathroom anytime he needs. No waiting for owners to show up. Any of you leave dogs outside in runs while you are at work? How do you start a puppy to enjoy outdoors in runs?
