Hi. Hope it's okay to ask this as a new topic. We have an approx 11 week old border collie puppy. I hadn't done much research re foods when we got him so just went out and bought any old puppy food (pedigree puppy kibble). It was gradually mixed in with some pellets the previous owner gave us. I think it might be affecting dog's bowels as poos are quite sloppy (although he did just have his first injection too). Can anyone recommend a good quality dry kibble for sensitive stomach (I believe grain free is the way to go) that isn't horrendously expensive. Happy to spend money on him, but obviously don't want to spend £36 a bag if we can get similar quality for £10 less. I know every dog is different, just looking to see what others have tried that works well. Many thanks.

Hi Guys, I need some help please I have a 7 month old Border Collie Named Misty. She’s always had an appetite and got excited at meal times however the last few days she has been leaving her food. Right from the moment we brought her home she has had the same food. Her food is a custom blend from tails.com which is formulated for her breed, age and weight. She has 2 meals a day, 1 in a morning of just dry food and 1 in the evening of dry and wet food mixed. She has always eaten both meals happily. But the last few days she has started to leave food. Her morning feed she tends to eat most of it but leaves a little. But with Her evening feed she has started to leave over half of the food. She’s no longer excited at meals times and when I put her bowl down she doesn’t want to eat straight away. When she eventually does she will have around half the food then walk away. I’ve tried reducing her portion sizes but she still leaves half. Other than her food she had a Dental chew and that’s it. Shes fine in herself, she’s still drinking and playing. She still goes for her walks and has plenty of energy but she just won’t eat her full meals. I’m just worried that she’s not eating enough and I really don’t know what to do. Is this normal? How can I encourage her to eat?Could there be a medical problem? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Our 5 and half month is soo hyper he comes put of his crates after naps and is non stop even with adequate mental and physical stimulation he just ends up over tired and has to be enforced for a nap. He never stops moving and has too much energy I read in Barbara Sykes book 90% percent of border collies receive too much protein in their diet and need 24% or less. Our boys food is 27% however when I look round for kibble with lower protein its soo hard to find it. Anyone have success stories or any recommendations? -
Hi, I was just looking for some advice. I have a female border collie and she’s 5 months old. She is such a confident pup and she loves playing with people and other dogs. The only real problem I’m experiencing is that she is really aggressive with resource guarding when it comes to chew sticks, bones and the like. She isn’t as bad with her normal food that she has at meal times but anything of ‘high value’ you just can’t go near her without her growling, showing her teeth then if you go to close she snaps at you. I’ve also found that if she’s fixated on something and you try and get her away from whatever it is she does the same thing. My girlfriend has guinea pigs and she will just sit and stare at them all day and won’t move even if you call her then when you go over to her she growls. Does anyone have any tips or training methods I can do to try and get her to stop this behaviour? Anyone with success stories having had this problem? Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

Hi everyone~ Last time I posted was right around when Nalu turned 9 months old. Two weeks later, he and I were both in a severe head-on collision (a bank robber running from police drove into oncoming traffic and hit us going 90mph). Amazingly, we both survived. Me with severe injuries that took a year to heal from, and Nalu with bruising and some puppy PTSD. We were incredibly lucky. Nalu had to be taken care of by family for the next 3 months, and walked by others for the next year. He is now 2 years old, and we are both doing very well. Here's some more background info before I get to my question: when Nalu was 8 weeks old, he ate a Sago Palm tree seed--highly poisonous to dogs (which of course we didn't find out until after we rushed him to the vet with serious vomiting). The vet pumped his stomach and gave him something that soaked up the poison, and he ended up being fine. But since then, he has always had slight liver issues that we've kept an eye on. Okay, with that info in mind--because of his liver issues, I made sure to raise him on a very healthy diet, and get him plenty of exercise. He hadn't shown any signs of having problems, and his liver seemed to be improving until the accident. The people taking care of him while I was in rehab gave him whatever food they could find. At that point, I wasn't with it enough to know what was going on. When I got him back, I quickly got him back on a healthy diet, and his coat improved, but his liver had issues again. I got him on some medicine that brought it back to healthy levels. But it is crazy expensive to keep him on it. He has been eating Canidae All Life Stages, and has done well on it. But my vet recommends getting him on something that is not so stocked with protein if i don't keep him on the medicine. I could use some advice on what my next step should be. I really can't afford keeping him on the medicine (it's something like $120 a month). But want Nalu to be healthy. The vet recommended Costco brand food that has protein and sweet potato. Has anyone tried this?

After doing a lot of research on what's the best diet for my boy, and taking into account the biased advice of vets and vet university schools. I recently found this clip which may be of use to you. I had also incorporated coconut oil into his food after his coat started getting dry blonde streaks from being in the ocean and pool sometimes twice a day and in the sun a lot. Now his coat is back to its original glossy dark chocolate.

My boy Nalu is coming up on 9 months old. So crazy how fast they grow. But I've recently done research and had discussions about food with my vet and others, and am getting conflicting answers. So, of course, I come here, to the real experts. My vet is telling me to transition him into adult food now, and if I want to change his food brand, now is a good time to do it. He has been eating Science Diet since I first got him, and hasn't had issues with it. Though I've read somewhere that a grain-free diet is better for border collies since they need the protein, and it also helps alleviate allergies (which Nalu has, out here in crazy pollen-land Utah). I'm looking into maybe transitioning to Canidae or Natural Balance maybe? But maybe the Science Diet is fine? Any suggestions? What is the best kibble for BCs? Also, I give him frozen pieces of chuck roast as a treat (a suggestion I saw on here), which he LOVES, but someone mentioned it'd be better for him if it was raw, or only lightly cooked, and then frozen. True?

When I got Nessie from the SPCA, she was being fed Science Diet. I'm told that's a pretty gross food that's full of stuff she doesn't need. So I switched her to Orijen 80/20 adult in late 2012. She's got a nice low and stable weight, nice looking fur and stools seemed fine if not a bit on the hard side. This is where it gets strange, though. Orijen's factory burned down at some point last year and I had been using the old 5.5lb bags that were black with blue halftone photographic art on them. My LPS has gotten a new shipment (in smaller, 5lb bags) - probably the latest version of the food, but It's still the 80-20 adult formula. I did the same switch over I did with the Science Diet: about 10 days of blending between the kibble. But I now have a big problem, Ness has gotten very loose stool after feedings since the switch, but she's been otherwise healthy and happy. There hasn't been a lot of stress or anything around the house, so the only variable would seem to be food. I cooked up some rice and boiled chicken and all is fine again for the last 3 or 4 days. I might go see if I can track down the 2012 style food around town, but it's not going to last forever. I guess it's time to change food brands? I can't imagine the formula changed that much?
