Sounds exciting, hope you post pics. Congrats!

So sorry for your loss. I know they say you were given a gift with such a special dog...but with that gift comes great sorrow when they leave us. I wish they stayed with us longer.

Our Sheltie passed six years ago. He was such a special boy I think about him everyday. So sorry for your loss...there is never enough time.

How to break up a dog fight.
Cody & Duchess replied to Tommy Coyote's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
I have two females - one fear based..and they do not like each other. Have only had to use this once...pick up the hind legs, back up like backing up with a full wheelbarrow but sweeping arch. This causes the dog to pay attention to their front feet position and does not allow them to turn around and get you. I also have a mantra of saying "easy"..... Calmly. But that is probably more for me. Having a plan at least makes me feel better. -
Dog became suddenly really needy
Cody & Duchess replied to Cody & Duchess's topic in Health and Genetics
Yes, she is spayed. She has always been connected with me...but wanting to sleep with her head on my shoulder is new. She acts like she needs me to comfort her. Just want to make sure during the vet visit I do not overlook anything. I have even thought maybe her eyesight is impacted. Since when she sits down in the walks she looks like she is surveying her kingdom with her nose in the air. -
What an amazing dog to share some time with. So sorry for your loss. You were blessed to be his person.

Female 8 yr old dog all of a sudden really needy. Wants to sleep in my arms, glued to me. She has had bad elbows for years, her activity level is really good....so they do not recommend surgery because they could not improve what she has. Plays frisbee everyday for at least three sessions. Has started to sit down on her walks. Just sits, looks around, then proceeds. Eats well, body functions great. I can massage her legs with no reaction from her other than drifting off to sleep....so I think no pain. She is on salmon oil...no pain meds. Have a vet appt...other than saying she has become like glue to me and this new sitting down on walks ...what should I ask for? Something is not right. My sister asked me is I was physically okay..maybe he dog was reacting to that? ( I am fine) It could be that she just picked up a funny personality trait, maybe I am just a worry wart.

What's the best thing your dog ever taught YOU?
Cody & Duchess replied to simba's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
I have four dogs, two which are really soft dogs. They have taught me how to be calm and let it go. ( still working on perfecting this though). They both pick up stress, even quiet stress, like you are screaming. My mantra "its okay". What an amazing lesson and gift they have given me. -
So sorry for your loss, time passes to quickly.

What the best thing you ever taught your dog?
Cody & Duchess replied to chene's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
Leave it, wait, and a bullet proof sit. BUT my favorite....the command " go wake up ( insert the name of a kid staying with us)" Cody will not bother anyone until he is instructed, but he explodes with glee with the above command. Flies thru the house, jumps on the bed and digs out any child or person who tries to ignore his jubulient good morning. -
Sometimes a positive can come out of a loss
Cody & Duchess replied to Izzysdad's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
Congrats on your new addition, you are right she will never replace Zoey, but she will surely worm her way into your heart in a new a different manner. In the photo with your pack, beautiful but you also show you are one courageous man. They look like they are going to keep you on your toes. Again, congrats. -
Midnight Border Collies
Cody & Duchess replied to highway61's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
I believe that bc should be breed for working ability by a knowledgeable person, even if the eventual owner will not use that dog for this purpose. If the dog does not have proven ability plus other good breeding qualities, they should not be bred. Even if you are getting a dog "just for pet purposes" .... Getting a puppy mill dog or a back yard breeder is voting for bad practices with your dollars. One may figure it is just one dog out of many. I take in second act dogs, dogs that did not have a great future. Cody, my BC, is exceptional to me. That being said he is fixed because other than stealing my heart his working ability is unknown. We are at our max with four dogs...people say why do you do it. I cannot stop all irresponsible breeding but I can make a difference to these four dogs. A small impact in a large problem. Buying a dog from breeders who are not acting in the best interest of the breed continues the problem. There are far to many breeds ruined because they were bred for characteristics that were not in the best interest of the animal. If we all did a little more work and stopped impulse purchases of animals the world would be a better place. Congrats to MnM, sounds like the extra effort was worth it. -
How has your dog(s) surprised you?
Cody & Duchess replied to OurBoys's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
Cody, the dog that never does anything wrong..at least intentionally, tells on the other 3 if they do. About a week ago he woke me up in the middle of the night because two of the other dogs decided to do rare adventure into the kitchen garage. He was all concerned and would not let me sleep until I got up to investigate. After I did he went promptly back to sleep. -
I will never forget the Swafford dogs, their condition still haunts me. Thank you so much for making Zoey's life so wonderful. Her loss must be incredibly painful, hopefully with time your time together will be an amazing memory.

That'll do, Tansy (Aug. 2000-July 2014)
Cody & Duchess replied to Pippin's person's topic in In Memoriam
So sorry for your loss, may the wonderful memories bring smiles to your heart. -
My dogs are starting to get up there in age, oldest 11. Vet recommends getting her teeth cleaned. Had a Sheltie, who has since passed on at age 14.5, had his teeth cleaned at 13. When I was working with rescues looking for a new dog - they expressed concern that I did such a procedure at the age of the dog. At the time, my Sheltie only looked old due to a little arthritis. At what age would you think the risk of the procedure out weighs any preventative benefit? Thanks

Tolerance and dog aggression
Cody & Duchess replied to simba's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
I agree with Gloria. Your dog was fine, the retriever needs to learn manners. One of my dogs is really afraid of other dogs coming at her while she is on leash and the other dog is off leash. I adopted her because she was going to but to sleep bc of this fear. She has been with us 4 yrs. She trusts me to keep other dogs away from her. Most of the time I am successful. If I fail and a dog gets to close she does growl and show her teeth. I believe that warning sign is better than going into straight attack mode. -
Is This Going to Be OK?
Cody & Duchess replied to Two Labs & Mia's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
I have a bc, a bc/springer, a bc/ Pyrenees and a vizsla mix. Four dogs and 4 totally different personalities. For me the easiest dog is the bc......but I believe it is because he is a male and has a "want to please you personality". Your new pup is adorable and sounds like she will be a wonderful addition to your family. -
Would you husband be willing to lay down on the floor? My border collie from rescue was extremely jumpy and shy, but if the person was lying down he saw them as his best friend and snuggled up next to them.

Going on Vacation - Need Advice Please
Cody & Duchess replied to JeffSG's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
Leave unwashed tee shirts in his bed. At least he will be able to smell you. -
Thunder shirt has anyone tried one?
Cody & Duchess replied to Blamoms's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
Helps my dog settle, she is still REALLY unhappy with the thunder but she will settle in her bed or the bathtub. Without the shirt she cannot settle and paces. -
Kipp is a beautiful boy and I am so sorry for your loss. I hate the stupid cancer.

Our transatlantic adventures
Cody & Duchess replied to alligande's topic in General Border Collie Discussion
I know we are not supposed to find human emotions in our dogs, but I have a dog like yours that definitely sulks and lets me know the she is not happy with me. With a very definite nose in the air and back facing me....she will show me. They are amazing. Good luck with your travels. -
New puppy and thanks for all the help!
