  1. Hi Bob, I have two 15 month old dogs who are coming along real nice. I've been working on a drive with them and now when I send them on an outrun they want to stop about halfway and start toward the sheep. Is this just a matter of reminding them what an out run is or is it more? Thanks, Tari
  2. Hey Ben, The people I got my BFL from also raise Katadhn. They used to cross their BF with cheviots but got tired of shearing, so they got the hair sheep. Maybe I can use one of their rams. I saw the pictures of Nick. He looks alot like my Craig who is 15 months old. Thanks for the input. Tari
  3. I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. I am small and don't have the luxury of not breeding ewe lambs if they are big enough. I have raised BFL crosses and have bred yearlings and have never had a problem. I'm not only raising sheep to work my dogs but for meat too. I will consider another ram for the first time but not breeding is no option. Thanks again to all who commented.
  4. I've been reading all the comments on Texel rams and am a little concerned. I have dorset/BFL ewe lambs and bought a Texel ram from a breeder in SE Ohio who got his stock from Bev Pearsall. He said they should be Ok if I don't grain the ewes heavy. The Texel web site said that they are a docile breed with not much flocking instinct, so I don't want to breed up any more than once. My ewes born in Feb. are about 70-75lbs. now, and I don't plan to breed till Oct. Do you think they will be OK?
  5. Hi , I'm new to the forum but I do know a little about BFL because that is the breed I have had for the past 6 years. BF rams used on hill bred sheep make excellent mules to breed to a terminal sire. I have BFL/Dorset cross ewes now and am going to breed them to a Texel ram. This breed has white wool, no wool on head or legs and can grow on grass with very little or no grain. I'm a spinner and that is why I had the BF but now that I am working and training dogs wool is not a as important to me because a friend who lives just 25 miles away has a large BFL herd if I want Fleece. I paid $250 for a registered ram, which I thought was reasonable. I live in SE Ohio.
