  1. Thinking of you. This is painful for me to read - I lost my darling, darling boy with a brain tumour just 6 months ago. I have a hole in my heart which is only his and will never be replaced. I really feel for you. :flowers:
  2. Thanks Julie. Yes there is a command - which is simply 'inside'. The pup had come back, but wouldn't go inside - but I do believe husband acted too stern over too little in this instance. Thanks guys for clarifying the lip-curl - I wanted to be absolutely sure. I will be working on the recall again - we have had somebody staying with us for a couple of months too (who doesn't train dogs and has no idea) and in my absence I think the command has become 'diluted'....

  4. Thanks Ooky - this has really bothered me! I usually command my dogs without raising my voice (especially this one) - and always use positive reinforcement in training. Pup was distracted by cows and although he came back, he didn't want to - and when asked to, he wouldn't go 'inside' the house..... husband gave the command several times, but pup almost did the opposite - this is when husband raised his voice and held him by the scruff and all this happened. Hubby wasn't yelling - just being 'stern' and certainly didn't hurt him, he wouldn't dream of it - but I am concerned about the lip curling and how to stop any chance of this escalating. He really is a very sweet and obedient dog, and obviously 'stern' treatment doesn't work for sure with this little dude. What would you have done? Positive reinforcement, but how? Would you have gone inside the house and called him from there? Any advice please? It is generally the human at fault.......
  5. Can somebody please explain 'passive agressive' behaviour? I think that's what we are dealing with in our pup (9 mths) - he is so good (almost too good to be true!) in general, but when he got confused tonight and husband raised his voice and held his scruff (wrong, I know) he growled quietly and curled his lip, but wet himself at the same time. I have had many collies - and this particular collie is an utter pleasure (a really clever and normally perfectly behaved pup) - but what does this behaviour mean, and how should we correct it? What should we do if the pup growls at us - although I feel he's maybe confused about what we want, bearing in mind this is only the second time it has ever happened - but I don't want this to escalate. We have NEVER smacked this dog.
  6. Echo. Sending you very best wishes.
  7. My border collies are very active - they are on a 32 acre ranch - BUT they don't show or herd livestock. I feed Orijen and it's around 40% protein - is this too much protein for my dogs and their 'busy' but not 'performance' lifestyle?
  8. My collie pup (8 mths) has a brown 'shadow' on his canine which is worrying me. I have enclosed a pic to see what you all think? Am I being paranoid or is this worth a vet visit? I have circled the area of concern - the other 'speck' on his tooth by the gum was something tasty out of the garden, and isn't there any more! My dogs have always had fabulous teeth, including my two 13 yr old collies - but this little pup's tooth is bothering me.
  9. Another vote for Orijen - and I also use Go Natural! in between for a change. NOTE (I found this today when checking out the Go Natural! website to provide info): http://www.petcurean.com/index.php?page_id=195 there is a disclaimer on here stating that the AAFCO do not allow them to put glucosamine in their Life Stage dog food anybody know the reason behind this?
  10. Not experienced any problems with Thyroxine and aggression in my female. Did they test for Cushings too?
  11. He's georgeous! I'm from the UK, although living in Canada, and my dogs came from Eng/Scot mix - as a matter of interest, where was he from?
  12. Poor Win - but these people here know what they are talking about, and I would take their advice. So sorry! The red flag for me was the 6 wk issue - and the colour does nothing for me anyhow - walk away. Just a thought - why are their pedigree listings only available on request? My pup's breeder had easy availability to all her pedigree charts.
  13. Good luck with your trip to the vets. I'm impressed with that donut too! That actually looks comfy as well as serviceable!
