  1. Thanks for everyone's help! I'm happy to report that Trend has really come out of her shell this past month... It has me thinking maybe it was a fear period after all. 3 weeks ago I was at an agility trial and she was totally social with everyone, I was actually working on her NOT jumping on people instead of being afraid of them. About a week before this trial, she was still timid, but getting better, and then at the trial it was like 'Wow! Where'd that come from?' Ever since then she has been perfectly fine with people and other dogs Jodi, I PM'ed you
  2. Both her parents are very outgoing and social. Trend and her brother were both owned by the same person before she decided it was best to rehome one of them. Trend's brother is the most outgoing, friendly puppy I have probably ever met. He loves people, other dogs, and basically anything... Thanks for all the advice!
  3. I got my Trend as a re-home about two months ago, when she was 5 months old. She is an amazing little puppy, except for the fact that she is very wary of strangers and other dogs. Her former owner said she thought she was just going through a fear period as when she was younger, she wasn't like this... It's been two months, and I've managed to get her to the point where she is comfortable walking near other people and dogs, but as soon as someone reaches down to pet her or another dog approaches her, she gets really nervous and scared. I'm trying to introduce her to a new, friendly dog each week, but so far it seems to no avail? Also with people, after she's been around them for 15 minutes, she's fine, but before that 'there's no way I'm going to let you pet me unless momma is holding me really close!' Any help, suggestions, ideas? I'm kind of stumped....
  4. Well, I've pretty much decided I will be bringing a new pup home this summer - I can't wait! Anyways, I was wondering whether a male or female would be better suited for our home. We have an almost 5 year female BC who can be a little snarky if a dog gets too into her face (just shows her teeth, has never attacked or bitten another dog), a female kitty, a bird, and I have a 11 year old brother. I have heard numerous things from males are normally more laid back and better with other dogs, to females dislike male border collies, and it is better to have two females. I'm not sure which is true, or if either are. What are your experiences and suggestions for my position?
  5. When she was about 7 or 8 months old we took her out to a local Herding breed puppy event (it was all Border Collies lol). She was very, very interested in the sheep, but her tail was always way over her back... I don't know much about stockwork and sheepdogs, but I'm thinking that's a gay tail, and not good? Here's a picture of it...
  6. I kinda want to know the quality of the dogs in her pedigree, and if any of them were brilliant stockdogs... just for fun
  7. There. I know it's taken me a while, but I added all of the names and locations of the owners. Link again: http://lpanda.proboards.com/index.cgi?
  8. I currently compete in agility with NADAC, USDAA, and AKC (i know i'm bad lol)
  9. There we go, I posted it to my website... http://lpanda.proboards.com/index.cgi
  10. The other topic about pedigrees got me interested, and now I'm curious about the dogs in Angel's pedigree. Angel is 4 years old, spayed, and she and I currently compete in agility together. Here's a link to a copy of the pedigree I made http://lpanda.proboards.com/index.cgi
  11. We feed Angel the red meat EVO and she loves it (she's 34 pounds, we feed her 1 cup a day). She has pretty much stayed at the same weight, she has plenty of energy and her coat is very shiny (and no loose stool).
  12. Way to go!!!! In our last trial (Lewiston) we q'ed in every run on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday we only q'ed twice...
  13. 15" of snow does not sound fun (especially camping in it ) at least you got a cabin!
  14. Probably not, I have only trialed in and around Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell. This month Angel and I are going up to Lewiston, Idaho (it will be our first time having to stay overnight somewhere) for a NADAC trial...
  15. I thought this would be fun... I was just wondering what everyone's favorite agility organization to compete in was and why. My favorite currently is NADAC (although I guess that's mainly because the only two agility organizations out here are NADAC and AKC... but we are getting USDAA in April!) I love how their courses are flowing and smooth, they really give the dog a chance to open out and run. I also really enjoy the distance work in Chances and such. Also, the people in NADAC around here are more in it just to have fun with their dog. Qualifying is nice to, but the main purpose is to have fun with their dog.
  16. Wow! I never knew that about Rising Sun... I guess I should have though. An agility lady I'm friends with around here has a red and white BC from RS, very fast agility dog, but totally not friendly at all. I thought it was just that dog's personality, but apparently it's the bloodlines. The lady loves visiting Angel because "You're BC is soooo much sweeter than mine!". My friend has seen that BC run, so that's what put her looking into Rising Sun. I'll make sure I tell her! (she was looking at the Roy x Irish litter) I have been checking out rescue... thus the puppies. I will always look at rescue first, but if there isn't a dog I like up for adoption, I'm going to go to a working breeder. Dianne Deal is the one who told our family about Julie Woods (she had puppies on the ground), the breeder we got Angel from. It was Nipper x Howdy, and I would love to get a dog of that cross again except for the part that Angel has epilepsy...
  17. Sometime in the near future I *might* be looking to add a new BC into the household! Don't know for sure yet, depends on how things work out, but in the meantime, I thought I'd get some breeders to check into. I don't mind shipping a puppy, but I would prefer a more local breeder. I am located in Idaho... And now for 2 kind of off topic questions/comments: -I have a friend who is looking into getting a pup from Rising Sun Farm http://risingsunfarm.com/index.html are they a good place to go to? -Also, our local animal shelter has four adorable puppies that look like full BC's to me... had to post a link. I would get them, but they will probably be gone before I'd be ready for another pup http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaype...?petid=12987675 http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaype...?petid=12987676 http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaype...?petid=12987678 http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaype...?petid=12987679
  18. I read that page... and I still am totally confused, is it just a blood test? And how does it help? Sorry, I'm a little slow here...
  19. Angel was diagnosed with epilepsy in April '08. Since then, we've had a hard time finding an acceptable dosage. I don't know if this is the norm, but it takes her 2 or more weeks to get adjusted to a new dosage (when we raise it). I too would not recommend Potassium Bromide. We put Angel on it... she didn't have any more seizures, but she was seriously totally psycho the time she was on it. Since she wasn't having any more seizures, we lowered her phenobarbittol but kept the bromide at the same level... had a seizure the next day. We took her off the Bromide and raised her pheno, but it was almost a month before she back to normal again (I guess not normal, but as normal as she can be on phenobarbittol)
  20. Sorry to kind of pirate the thread, but just a question... What does the Control Unleashed go over? Basic obedience and such? This post has got me interested in buying the book, but I'm not sure what it contains or really what it's about...
  21. This is what you get from our local city-run shelter... they haven't had to put down an animal because there is no room for it in months! "Your adoption fee helps meet the shelter's mission of building healthy relationships between animals and people. Plus, you receive these great benefits free when you adopt: Spaying or neutering of the pet Vaccinations Pet license and/or ID tag Collar and leash 30 days free pet insurance from ShelterCare™ covers pet accident and illness expenses Sample bag of Science Diet food & a free training DVD!" Before you adopt a dog, you have to go through a pre-adoption screening... The cost to adopt a dog is $77.50... with microchipping available at the time of adoption for $12.50... the adoption fees are lowered as the dog stays there longer. I am very happy with our local shelter
  22. The only agility organizations we have around here are NADAC and AKC. Angel and I compete in NADAC, and love it. I really don't know what to think about the course times... we just started agility (and are in novice) and on one standard run, we had to reattempt the weave poles 4 times, and still q'ed, and Angel isn't exactly what you would call a speed demon. However, one of my friend runs a Papillon x Dachshund and has yet to Q... on one tunnelers run, the dog didn't turn, spin, or stop running the whole time and still didn't Q. I do like the fact in NADAC that you can reattempt the weave poles if the dog gets a wrong entry, and if the dog goes around a jump, it's not a refusal... both which are unacceptable in AKC (which we won't probably be competing in again).
  23. Sorry... I must have been a little confusing- The bad coordination should only last for another couple of days- it is a result of upping the dosage of phenobarbittol. But, in the future, if we ever have to up the dosage again, this bad coordination will happen again for about a week. Also, she only has seizures when she's sleeping... I guess we're not going to be getting into herding anytime soon... but thanks for all of your advice
  24. Since we also train and compete in agility, I don't have very much spare cash laying around... so renting a pasture is not possible currently. I am also a younger teenager, so no job yet either. I *might* be able to convince a friend of mine who has some acreage to get some ducks or chickens or something if I will help with the expenses (she will be getting an Aussie soon and wants to get into herding too). A couple more questions: Angel has epilepsy and is currently on phenobarbittol for it. To put it bluntly, her coordination sucks. We just had to up her dosage a week ago, and if she's running and decides to turn quickly, she will plop right over. Just today, she managed to get up and back down the stairs without falling... woohoo! Hopefully, once she's used to this new dosage, she'll get a little better. Do you think we should still try and get into herding? We manage it with agility... How much on average does a herding lesson cost? -A *Haha, Bo Peep, I just realized you live like right next to me (well, a town away) Who is your trainer?
  25. Lately, since I have had more time on my hands, I have been thinking of getting into some herding classes with Angel, my 4 year old BC. However, just the other day I read on a website (not this one) that it is pointless to spend the time/money on classes if you don't have livestock at home that the dog can practice on on a regular basis. Is that true? Because we don't have access to stock on a regular basis... -Amanda
