  1. If someone could help me find that thread that would be great. I'm not so good at the search function. He's normally been very great at recall. But it seems like something just overcomes him. I will try the down and see if that works. I think overall, neutering is a good option anyway. We didn't think we would have this problem because we don't have many neighbors, but I guess a dogs gonna do what a dogs gotta do.
  2. Woody is now 1 1/2. He's been a great dog so far. He's very attentive and eager to please. We haven't had any problems til now. We live in a rural area with several acres. Woody is allowed outside, always supervised, to play and roam around. He never has gone far and has always come when called when he has wandered about of site. Lately, he has taken a liking to running away as soon as we turn our backs. He will bolt into the woods and refuse to acknowledge the come command. He has done this several days in a row. It usually takes 30 minutes or more to find him and he has been found quite a distance away at times. Woody is not neutered. Would neutring help stop him from running away? We presume that he is looking around for a pretty girl. He is often found at the neighbors, looking for their young German Shepard. After his last episode of this yesterday, he was crated and only allowed outside on a leash. We loved that he was able to play in the yard without being tethered to anything. But his current behavior is not acceptable and very frustrating. Any suggestions on how to modify this behavior?
  3. Woody is a red merle. He often gets confused for an aussie, but once he gets his fluffy tail out, he's all BC!
  4. I am searching for a quality frisbee for Woody. He had one we recieved from a disc dog competition that we watched, but it eventually got worn out and broke down. We tried the plastic ones available at the pet store, but it lasted about a week. Woody now has a great ulitmate frisbee disc, but it seems a little fat for him to catch. (He has to flip it over to carry/catch it. Is that normal for BC's to do that?). What kind of frisbee does your dog like? We are going to train him to do an amateur disc dog competition in May and would like to use something they approve? Do you know if they will let you use anything. The kong style looks like it will hold up for us, but I haven't seen one anywhere. The flying squirrel looks great too, but can you use one of those in disc dog?
  5. This was very interesting. I did a couple times to make sure, but Woody is so young I'm not sure he's developed a preference, but I gave it shot anyway. !/ If you put treats through a tube which paw does your dog grab for it? He used his nose to knock it out. 2. What paw does your dog shake with- without asking He starts with his left, but if you asked him again, he gives you the right. We learned to shake one paw and then the other. If you give him your hand, he will give you the opposite. Usually right, then left. It took him a minute to understand the word shake without me giving my hand, but he figured it out. 3. Chew toys? which hand first? he just uses his teeth. Although I've seen him paw it with both hands. He cups it in his paws and plays with it. Its really cute and quite fascinating. 4. gently put a blanket over your dogs head, which paw do they remove it with for this he used his right hand. All three times I tried it he used the right paw. 5. post it- on the center of the nose which paw do they use? This one he used the left paw. I was only able to get it to stick twice to his wet nose, but both times he took it off with his left paw. I wasn't able to get any pictures. If you need some I can try the skills again and try.
  6. I found that the clicker works as a great recall tool as well. Its amazing how fast Woody will come running when he hears the clicker. A squeaky toy works just as good, but the clicker is easier to find in a hurry.
  7. My 7 month old puppy Woody has the same butt curl. I call him Fuzzy Wuzzy because his hair is so fluffy. The only curly spot is right over is butt. Its worst when he's just been bathed and its really clean and slightly damp. I need to take a picture of it, incase it ever goes away. What is the "normal" weight for BC's?
  8. Its good to know that some of the crazy things my pup does is common. He does something though, that I'm not sure if its common, or if something is wrong with him. He will chew on his paws. He will stick his whole foot in his mouth and knaw on it like a chicken wing. I've tried to check his paws for things that might be bothering him and I've been unable to find anything. I thought it might be related to teething, but he's cut all his new teeth. Its usually only the back paws. Is this a common characteristic or should I take him to the vet?
  9. Its good to know that there isn't anything wrong with him. I don't mind the licking so much as long I know its not because of something else. I too, am very careful about soaps/cleaners because I know he will lick it. He'll stop when you ask him to, but he will give you a very sad look. I've begun to try the "thank you" technique. He'll look at you when you say it, but he hasn't quite associated it yet. Time for click and treat.
  10. Thanks for the help. I did a search, but I guess I didn't do it right because I came up with nothing. Those posts were very helpful.
  11. My 6 month old pup likes to lick everything. He licks the carpet, the floor, your skin, the kitchen cabinets, the car radio, you name it, he'll lick it. I'm curious to know if this is a normal characteristic of a BC or if something could be wrong with him? My fiance says that none of his others dogs have ever shown this behavior. Could there be a medical reason for this? He's done this since we got him 4 months ago. If this is typical for a BC, will he always do this or is this just a puppy thing? I don't mind the licking. If you tell him to stop, he usually does. Any adivce?
  12. Who doesn't love a puppy. He's shaping up to be one handsome fella.... Watch out ladies...
  13. I've done a lot of reading here to help me with my puppy. One of the things I've noticed that is expressed a lot is not allowing the puppy to jump or run aggressively until he is at least a year old. I'm concerned. I have a nearly 6 month old puppy that loves to play. He will fetch/ chase after anything that goes flying through the air. He only has one speed when fetching and that is fast. He runs like his life depends on whatever was thrown. Even if you just throw it 5 feet, he runs like crazy to get it. Is he hurting himself by playing this rough? Is this normal for a BC? I don't want to stop playing fetch because he loves it so much. Please help me keep Woody safe,
  14. My step son thought when he was a tot that the springer spaniels name was "off".
  15. My 5 month old puppy, Woody, loves Ice cubes. At first, all he would do was bark at it. But when he discovered how fun they are he cannot get enough of them. We have an automatic dispenser in the fridge and any time you use it, he comes running up to you and sits real pretty till he gets a treat. I like to call them "pupsicles." He goes nuts for his ice cube. Its the best treat I can give him. (Its good for him and its free!)
