  1. Has anyone seen this movie/ documentary? I bought it a while ago and just watched it... it was amazing to see these dogs work and interesting to hear the handlers thoughts... the scenery was phenomenal as well.. over all I really enjoyed it! Makes me appreciate all the hard work that goes into getting a dog herding, let alone good at it! I have just started lessons with Sam my 5 yr old border collie, while it's late in life for him to learn he is still impressing me with how the drive to herd is there. https://www.facebook...6552261?fref=ts
  2. Lesson number two under our belts now.. and it really never fails to amaze me that the natural instinct to drive the sheep comes out! Now if only I knew what the heck I am supposed to be doing.. Sam sure seems to be getting the hang of it tho! Was a beautiful morning in an amazing setting! can't wait to try it again! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151077515261455.418162.543581454&type=1&l=f6f0119ed9
  3. Leroy said to say hello! :-)

  4. I don't see any harm in it.. it's all for fun.. Sam and I were equally as dressed this weekend for a Disc dog trial freestyle routine :-) Done to the original batman theme. Sadly it all went to heck thanks to strong winds lol..
  5. Hahaha yeh maybe just a bit!! I have a lesson planned with him on Sunday.... I could say hi for you!!
  6. it is indeed Leroy.. and he is only 20 min away!
  7. It was amazing to see that light go on... he really impressed me! He had been around sheep a few times as a younger dog and seemed to be very scared... had more or less expected the same thing to happen this time but a few years maturity makes the world of difference I guess! the gentleman who ran the instinct testing clinic is also teaching lessons have one for next weekend and will soon plan more if he continues to do well! here is a link to see a pile of the pics... he wasn't perfect... but he is so smart with all the other stuff we do pretty sure he will catch on quickly.. at least I hope so! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151041708346455.412492.543581454&type=1&l=ed1857a410
  8. HI all, have been around th forums for a few years with my boy Sam, he's now 4.5 and I have finally had the opportunity to test him with Sheep! He scored 8 for instinct and 5 for intensity, am pretty excited to finally see him doing what he was naturally meant to be doing! It's pretty amazing to watch the natural drive kick in. Am hoping to get him into regular lessons now and maybe even some trialing if the opportunity comes up.. any advice or tips on what I can do to help increase his skills? The herding world is pretty new to me so please fogive any ignorance on my part.
  9. Went camping in Gros Mourne National park in Newfoundland last summer with Sam he did great.... the park was amazing.. the weather was great.. lots of hiking... He slept great in the tent... was over all a fantastic trip!!
  10. welcome!! Where in Nova Scotia are you? I am too live in the Truro area!! :-)
  11. Sam is also a picky eater, he gets kirkland brand kibble the chicken and rice. as his regular food and in reality it makes no difference what kibble he's been on he's not enthusiatic about it... can't say I blam him it's got to be kinda dull to eat... anyhoo to make a long story short in order to entice him to eat I add a 1/4 cup of cooked hamburger and brown rice mixed in with a few bits of shreddded cheese ... this seems to please his royal fussyness as he'll condecend to eat it... Sometimes I chop up chicken or had a boiled egg.... for a change but he's not an enthustiastic eater, never has been. he eats at his own pace which is something between dead stop and extreemly slow all while managing to look as if he is being punished... the martared look I get is something to behold!! I am a cruel and heartless human.... but if I have a toy..... the love and adoration is overwhelming lmao......
  12. Am glad to know it's not just me... and glad to know the site is ok...
  13. 14. RIP ... Pita cat... 1991-2009 you were a dear sweet girl. Miss you lots.. hope you and the rest of the furry family who've crossed the bridge ahead of you are happy and pain free....
  15. Hey!! Will be working over the next few days, so going to take the chance now to wish everone a very merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all for what ever festive event you celebrate this time of year! Have a safe and wonderful time with family and friends!! (keep all those who work in the emergency services in thier base and bored!) CHEERS!!! from Kate, Sam-BC Bob, Sophie, Tom, Fergus, and Polly! (the cats)
  16. Sam gets 1 cup of Kirkland kibble ( lamb and rice) with 1/2 a cup of cooked hamburger and rice in the morning and again in the evening occasionally some shredded cheese to spice it up.. Sam is not a food motivated dog in the slightest... have to make it interesting for him to eat... plus it has to be warmed up in the microwave for about a minute.... Sam is pretty skinny as well but he's a very active healthy dog just not food motivated.... kinda frustrating to be honest.. he weighs about 35-40 lbs
  17. Water and food bowls, bed or crate for them to sleep in/on, a rope to tie them on, a towel to dry them off if they get wet.. soggy doggy in the tent is not fun! a bucket to store thier food in... various toys and treats to amuse them... one thing I found really useful while camping with Sam this summer was a flashlight I could put around sam's neck, normally they are used around human heads.. made it easier for him to see where he was going and for me to keep track of him plus if there were cars driving around the park, they could see him. A doggy first aid kit.....ummmmm that's all I can think of atm...
  18. That's too cute... will have to start following it!!
  19. So Sorry for your loss.... Cats add a unique balance to our lives.... Oliver is off in the happy hunting grounds of kitty heaven..
  20. I have a similar situation with my BC Sam, he's not especially interested in food, is not at all motivated by it. It's frustrating as he's actually a bit under weight.. I now mix in some extra lean ground beef or chicken into his meals so he eats a bit more!! Occasionally some cheese to make it more interesting.
  21. Thanks everyone for your replies... as always it's got some well intentioned advice :-) see you all in a few weeks.. will post pic's of our trip....
  22. Am going on vacation in a day or so and taking Sam with me, our journey includes a 6 hour ferry boat trip.... for the ferry trip I have 2 options... option one: is just leaving him in the car and hoping he'll be ok.. as once the boat leaves dock I can't go visit him.. option two: is putting him in a kennel room.. this means bringing a airline style crate and putting him in that in said kennel room, I can go check on him when ever I want and they have an area where he can go pee and do his business.... I am going with option two by the way.. I'd feel awful not being able to check on him and he'll be safe in the kennel room... On the ferry I plan on sedating him with Acevet as reccomended by his vet as sam is fairly noise phobic and the ferry will be kinda noisy... leaving him home isn't an option and I I don't want to put him in a kennel.. he's fine in the cartravel wise.... we're going camping which he loves... I guess my question is about acevet... anyone here ever use it? how did your dog do with it? The vet gave me an extra pill so I could give it a try prior to travel... but hate to sedate him just as a test....
  23. lol speaking of RDM.... where has she been?? she vanished from the forums
