  1. The cold white north has it's own set of problems. The other night I was out taking Scout to do his business before bed and a strange large white bird came across the field and dove on him. It was a giant snow owl. They usually don't get down to NY. I called Scout who didn't even care about the strange bird. He came over, I scooped him up and took him inside. Never saw the bird again. The reason I know this owl is because we have had problems before. In the winter of 05 we had one diving on our husky. The husky weighs 55lbs so it seemed odd that the owl would make the attempt, but he did and the husky was jumping after him as he flew by. He perched in a tree 50 yards away and watched the dog until I went to bring him in. Then he flew over us both and disappeared. We have lost a cat to the back field a few years back, went out one day and never was seen again. We suspect it was either fox, owl, or coyote.
  2. I didn't realize that it would cut down their own production of it. He is going to the trainers for the weekend while we go camping so I think one tablet would be fine to take the edge off, but knowing what I know now I will definitely watch how often I give it to him. I haven't tried it on him yet so it should be interesting.
  3. The same thing with us. He was having real itchy skin so we would add fish oil to his food and he would stop itching. Sometimes we would forget and it would come back but as soon as we started it again he would no itch. We use 3V Caps liquid HP skin formula, DVM, ours comes in a pump so I just use 1 pump with breakfast and 1 with dinner. Only downfall is he starts smelling fishy, anyone else find that?
  4. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using melatonin as an anti anxiety. I was recommended it by a friend who has an aussie with thunderstorm issues and it has worked wonders. My trainer said she has used it with no problems. Just wondering if anyone here has heard anything about it or used it. Thanks ~ Tracy & Scout
  5. I was just wondering what some of the daily rituals your bc's look forward to. Every morning Scout loves "singing" with my husband. And if by chance hubby forgets Scout will walk around and whine until hubby gets the point, then he will pick him up to his shoulders and "sing" together, it is so cute. Scouts tail goes a mile a minute! Another is he knows exactly when my kids home and will sit by the door and wait for them. I just love dogs with personality!
  6. Scout gets hosed down constantly while I garden, so he really never needs a bath.
  7. We got Scout around 6 wks and I think he was around 8 wks when he went down. It may sound mean but I pretty much dragged him down but once he was down he was ecstatic! His butt was going a mile a minute, and he never had a problem after that.
  8. Funny you mention this, Scout has the same coloration around his mouth and ears. His dad was a red and white while mom was balck and white, we just assumed that the coloration was a result of dad but our trainer said that alot of that is from the food they eat.
  9. Scout has had itchy skin his whole life. There is no flaky skin, it doesn't look dry, really no indication that he would be having any kind of a skin problem but we have given him "3V caps HP" which has fish oil and other vitamins in it with his food and that seems to stop the itchiness, but then he smells of fish. The eye hair loss is different since it doesn't bother him at all. He isn't itching there. Hopefully the revolution will help. DTrain - good luck to you, so many times it is trial and error to figure out what will help.
  10. My vet had mentioned that he wouldn't neuter Scout until he assessed his maturity because it varied greatly from one dog to the next. But we got Scout very young and he was lifting his leg at about 7-8 weeks, not consistently tho so we assumed he was copying Kodi, our husky.
  11. I just called the vet and she said it could be a number of things and wouldn't know for sure unless they scraped it, but being as difficult as he is that we could watch and wait for a couple weeks to see if it doesn't clear up. She also mentioned that the heartworm meds he was supposed to start "Revolution" would clear any mites if that was what was causing it, so we will start that tonight. My hubby didn't want to start that until we actually saw a mosquito, ha! Tracy
  12. Scout has his neuter, 2 weeks ago this Friday, 2 days after he came back he started losing hair around one of his eyes. It is steadily getting worse, slowly curving around to the top of the eye. He isn't itching it at all but it looks weird. Does anyone know what this could be and could he have caught it at the vet? Any home remedies work or is this a trip to the vet?
  13. While washing the car the other day Scout noticed the water running down the driveway onto the lawn so he proceeded to dig a huge hole to contain it then played in the mud puddle, what a mess!
  14. I had often wondered if a stranger started throwing the ball whether he would still bark or just play along with the ball game. It would be interesting to try. We have tried the treat throwing thing but he isn't interested in treats. He becomes to fixated on the stranger and will pee everywhere, we have a heck of a time trying to distract him enough to change his focus.
