  1. thanks for this post...my mace has recently regressed drastically on his recall...but i don't like the idea of using a long line either, that's just too easy for him...no problems there... i'm going to try the growl technique today! or imitating my husband's voice...lol...since he ALWAYS comes to him...
  2. thanks for the response! i think you have some great ideas...he seems to be regressing...and well, that means going back to the basics...right? i see you have a 2 yo bc...did you ever have an issue with this? mine is just over a year, and was doing just fine with my recalls...until recently...
  3. i recently began working with great lakes bcr and just adopted out my first foster! woohoo! i am sad to hear that a rescue did not approve them...there are some bc's that obviously need higher than a four foot fence and aren't good with kids...but there are many in rescue that would be just fine under these 'conditions'... to me...this is laziness on the rescue's part...not knowing the dogs, and not visiting the homes... a good fit does not always require a 5 foot fence...! mho of course.... please check out greatlakesbcrescue.org...a little out of your area, but we just got a couple pups into foster care that are soooo sweet...!
  4. my bc is such a good boy...and recalls nicely in the house for both me and my husband... however...when we are outside, he will only come to my husband, not to me... This is becoming very frustrating! I am the one who takes him to his obedience classes and taught him everything he knows...on top of our frisbee games and beginner agility...not my husband! any suggestions of how i can take control back???? thx!
  5. maceo eats 2 cups of kibble in the morning...and #2's twice a day... he is about 46# but seems kind of skinny lately...any way to tell if his weight is ok without a trip to the vet??
  6. welcome...from one michigander to another...
  7. classes will be great for this dog...maceo had a confidence issue, that made him very shy and fearful...after classes, he is like a new dog..! it will build confidence which in turn will help with his fear issues...mho
  8. all this talk about merles is making me feel guilty for having one...but you know what...i love maceo...he is a great dog, and a fine athlete, strong, fast, smart, and the most loving boy... he has lots of white...and blue eyes...just the thing that apparently makes the majority of the people on this thread's skin crawl... but i'm not going to be guilty...he was born to be my dog...and i love him just the way he is...
  9. thanks so much guys! these are all great ideas...the hind the treat game is going to be on tonight's agenda...
  10. it is cold here in michigan....and poor maceo just can't be outside as much as he'd like to be because his paws get so cold and he begins limping around...in order to burn some energy and keep him entertained, we play hours of 'catch and fetch' and practice obedience, but it is getting old...any one have an ideas for inside 'games' we can play that are house friendly, but mental and physical challenging for the pup?
  11. maceo had this same problem until recently...he turned 1 yr old today! the vet called it 'submissive urination' and gave us some info on it...since maceo peed on the vet...funny now...embarrassing at the time... here's a site with some info... http://www.preciouspets.org/newsletters/ar...e-urination.htm i also found obedience classes to really help with this issue...he is much more confident now! and we no longer refer to him as 'the fountain'...
  12. i'm just your average dog owner...but in these types of cases...i would say go with your gut... you know your dog... labored breathing is always something to be concerned about in my opinion...
