  1. just wanted to let everyone know i have continued to feed shadow the nupro dry food and the spices in mackeral. went a month without bathing her.used the shampoo with tea tree oil in it. her scratching has decreased greatly.her skin is not flacky anymore.still scratches but not constant. THANKS EVERYONE for sharing your information with me.
  2. folowling a link from this board. i ended up watching a you tube short. by kats dogs. this person narrated the course explaing what dog had to do and what would fail the dog at each obstscle. then on animal planet the next night i watched a tril contest. knowing what to look for in ech obstacle i enjoyed watching this so much. really just makes me want to get in there and try it.this year is not good for me to sart anything new. maybe by next year.after i get theraphy dog visits under my belt.
  3. i mostly just brush shadow. in the summer i have the groomer give her a shave down that just trimms her stomach hair. my mother sometimes gets the cissers and cuts shadows butt /back leg feathers. i try to brush her at least once a day.with a under coat rake.for going on theraphy visits i brush her with a regular dog brush.from ears to tail.
  4. sure i could promote aglity.once i learn how to set one up and the rules ect....found a inexpensive little aglity kit. in a pet store catalogue. thinking about getting it and use it for mental stimulation for my dog. shadow.just something we can play with.both in side and out
  5. no suzanne nothing wrong with being browd butt its just that i have not seen any other border collieswith browd butts.or no tail reason i thought she might be something besides a border colli. it was only after i started working at the spca that i learned not all border collies are black and white.
  6. well would not mind getting involved in the sport. however i do not think shadow would be good at that.she is bery sweet but is not the brighest bulb in the pack.she is also very needy. wanting constant petting.i belive she is best being a theraphy dog. if i did not live with my mother. i would love to get another border collie for aglity.not sure if i could do the moves myself. i have a pronounced limp. no vision in the lower left vison field. can no longer drive so must depend on mother to drive me around.and that is a little far out for her to take me on a reguler basis.yes i did have fun.what i really want to do in the future. when i have my own place is to have a border collie rescue.
  7. thats a cutie that gyp. yes my sugar had a good life.i had acre yard fence in. that was her place she watched over it. there was a dirt trail all along the fence line.from her walking the fence.when she got sick she weighed 62 pounds. her butt got brouad when my friend had her spayed. she was the smartest and best behaved dog i ever saw. much smarter than the one i have now. the posted picture was one of the last taken of her. you can see i her face she was not feeling well.
  8. did go to watch the aglity thing today at family dog club. just watched some of the dogs in action. but not knowing the rules of the run did not know if dog did good or bad. one lady had her border collie named twister. he was fast there was also a lady with a australion shepard named bonnie. now that dog was really good.it was like once started the dog just went on its own. bonnie was having a fun time. :
  9. this was my first bc. a friend saved this dog from a abusive home she looked to be about 3 months old. my friend kept her until she was 6 years old. at that time my friend moved into a apartment and could no longer keep her. so he gave her to me knowing i would give her a good home.we really never knew what breed of dog she was, until i watched the movie babe.my dog looked so much like the dog fly. that i realized she was a border collie. her name was sugar she took it upon herself to be my protecter until i had her pts. at the age of 16. when i learned she had cancer the vet suggested letting her go. would be best for her at her age so before she ever had much pain. i told her goodby.and had her pts after having this wonderful dog i wanted another border collie so did a lot of internet research how i found this site. now my sugar was browd across the butt. did not have a tail.i have not seen any border collies with out a tail and as big as sugar. either on net or when working at the spca.
  10. sitting here with tear filld eyes . reminds me of when i had to say good by to my first border collie. she had liver cancer. at the age of 16 years i had her pts before she had much pain. was like taking my child.that was 3 years ago.and even at odd moments i still shed a tear thinking of her. the night before i took her to the vet for the last time. i sat and brushed her telling her i loved her but she was going to sleep and when she woke up she would feel better and not be sick any more and one day i would see her again.and i read daily the rainbow bridge. it let me knowi did the right thing as much as it hurt to let her go.now i have my second border collie. i love this one just as much and due to sitituion with. i my health i have bonded with this one.even tighter.they both have their own personatlies.so my relationship with them has been diffrent. but i will not take a million dollors for either of them or the time spent with them.youre jersi will be in good hands when shes gone.tell her when she reaches that bridgeto look for a big fat black and white border collie named suger. to help her learn her way around.it hurts but life does go on.remember the bridge. where you will see jersi again.beverly
  11. sea i have been giving shadow a fish oil cap every night for the year i have had her.i had already changed her dry dog food to one that is better for her coat and skin.only other thing i have changed is increas o mackeral.and added those spivces to it which was recommended by the holistic vet to another posters dog.so shouldld be safe for dog to take.i will give this at lest a month if no improvement to the vet we go.when it comes to holistic herbs and supplements my mother knows a lot about that kind of stuff.reason i started the fish oil caps was to address dry skin from the inside out.instead of using those medicated shampoos.that only dries her skin out more.i feel i have been handed some good advice here.and for thefirst time feel hopeful thatthis issue can be corrected.without puttinghr on steroids which are harmfulif given over long peroid of time. or that cost me an arm and leg. not that shadow is not worth it but because my disablity check only strecthes so far.
  12. ruth you are right in that i am making several changes with my dog. all at once. that is only because i am despert to find relieft for her her itchyness. and yes all dogs are diffrent. and what works on one might not work on another. i look at that this way.there have been several suggestions offered some addrees skin others adress food. each one of these suggestions. at bes thave a 50 50 chance of working on shadow. if it works that is good if it does not then i am right where i started. regardless of the suggestion everyone of them should be safe to try on shadow because the poster making the suggestion is /has used it on their dog.i am sure they love their dogs just as much as i love my shadow.i just would like to find her relief before we begin actually go on visits. so she can do her job and not be scratching the whole time during the visit.we should have her license any time now.i really do apprecate your input and hope you get to feeling better soon.
  13. ruth thanks for the warning about the cod liver oil and vit a.will look up this web site.
  14. last bath i used the olive oil base shampo with pepperment and tea tree oils mixed in. left her coat soft and shiney.she is eating the mackeral with the spices in it very well now cleans her plate.hoping to notice less scratching in next couple weeks.
  15. mother and i have been talking of getting cod liver oil to put on her food.along with giving her the fish oil capsuels and the mackeral.that should be as good.and we can get it here at the healthfood store.which is more convient for mother. my disablity prevents me from driving. so i depend on mother a lot.she makes regular trips to the health food store anyway.hopefully combinding all these suggestions will stop her itching.
