  1. Is this study still active/sending kits for testing ? My 2 year old BC is thunder/noise phobic and I would be happy to send a swab or blood. Kat, owned by Finn
  2. Hi Mark, yes it is the Mechanicsburg/Carlisle area.I was recently given her phone number and have not contacted her yet.I want to do a little research first,a little studying of the basics, terminology and whatnot.I don't want to go up there and be a complete idiot like " flank? what's flank-a cut of meat ? " LOL. I have sympathy for any trainer getting not only a green dog, but a green human as well. I'm also working hard with Finn to get a solid recall and a solid " lie down ", and we've switched the " come " command to " here" so as not to confuse with " come bye ". But my very question was is he maybe too old to start, and you all have given me a hopeful response on that one, Thank You ! Kat, owned by Finn
  3. LOL,Thank you Darci, and Finn says your dogge is incredibly handsome/beautiful as well Kat, owned by Finn
  4. Thank you Charlie, ( and I love your avatar ) Kat, owned by Finn
  5. Hi all, I am owned by a year and 1/2 old BC, Finn. I recently learned there may be someone nearby who offers training with sheep. My question is, is Finn too old to start now ? ( He recently started racing on a flyball team and loves it, but I would love to give him the opportunity to do what his breed was meant to do ).That is of course,if he " has it ".I understand just being born a BC doesn't guarantee that. My last BC passed away at 12 1/2 yrs and my only regret was that he never got to herd. Thank you Kat, owned by Finn
  6. Finn ( just over a year old,) started on Innova,Solid Gold, and Evo kibbles,( I would rotate )along with Wilderness or Evo canned. About a month ago I started him on Ziwi Peak http://www.ziwipeak.com/nzl/home.shtml it came highly recommended and seems to be a good diet,we'll see. It's obscenely expensive,so it had better be good. He also now gets Primal raw bones for his teeth,I had posted on here because his teeth were dirty and I did not want to put him under anesthesia.Several of you all suggested the meaty bones, and WOW did that ever work, after just a couple of bones his teeth were white again instead of tan/brown ! THANK YOU ! Kat
  7. My BC Finn is just over a year old, and I've noticed that his teeth ,particularly the side and rear molars, are quite stained/tartary. Certainly not the white teeth you would normally see on a young dog.His teeth are brushed regularly,3x a week.He is on dry kibble ( we rotate brands: Innova,Evo,Solid Gold & Wilderness ) and he gets canned food ( usually wilderness ) once a week.My husband gives him bully stix to chew on, we're phasing those out in case they stain but it hasn't made a difference yet.( Yuk, I don't much like them anyway ). My husband is pushing to make an appt for him at the vet for a dental cleaning, however because I used to work for the vet as an asst, I am not inclined to want to put a dog ( esp a young dog, esp a border collie, esp MY border collie ) under anesthesia unless it is absolutely necessary. Has anyone else had this situation, or have any suggestions , or ideas what would be causing this at such a young age ?
  8. My Finn is just over a year old and has been practicing with a flyball team.He may run this weekend for the first time in Maryland, but if not, definitely in October in Pennsylvania. He LOVES flyball, and being a BC, well, he's fast and totally focused on the ball and the job.I don't care about points or titles, I just want Finn to have an activity he loves.I 'm on a team of good people who all feel the same way . My last BC, Scout, passed away at 12 1/2 years old due to disintigrating discs/vertebrae.The last year plus of his life was downhill on steroids and pain meds.I'm quite convinced frisbee was the cause.Obviously I did not know the damage it can do to their musculoskeletal system, when they land on the ground.Finn will never play frisbee.
  9. Thank you very much, oh Lucia is SO BEAUTIFUL, and I love her name.I went to her Dogster page and left her a bone, her pictures are amazing, so gorgeous ! I'm going to have to set up a Dogster account for Finn, so he can get himself some BC e-friends . Kat, owned by Finn
  10. Thank you ErinKate, and your dog is a beauty as well ! I just love each and every one of them Kat, owned by Finn
  11. Thank you for the welcome, I clicked on your profile and Gypsy is SO beautiful, and learning to read, WOW ! You live near a beach, you are very lucky. We vacation at a family home at the beach for a few weeks each year.My first BC was afraid of the water and would only get his feet wet.But Finn ran right in and started chasing waves, he LOVES it.I ran out and bought him a life vest and a long floatable lead, I'm afraid of the riptides. Kat, also partial to split faces
  12. HHi everyone, I'm so happy to meet you all and all your special fur-friends.I actually found this site many months ago, but then time has a habit of being scarce in my home, better late than never though , right ? My name is Kat, and my husband and I are owned by our wonderful year old male BC , Finncannon. We call him Finn. He is a beautiful, tall, lean, half white/black face , medium coat, and marbled like a Holstein cow. ( I will attempt to include a picture, and I tried to do my avatar, but this is my first post and I'm not sure exactly *what * this post will look like I apologize in advance if it is a complete disaster Finn is in advanced basic obedience, and he has been training with a flyball team called " Don't Blink " from Wellsville, PA. He has not yet run in any tournaments because of his age, but we are attending a tournament in Howard County MD in Sept, and it's possible he may run in that one.Ideally, I would like for Finn to have the opportunity to learn to work sheep, and I just learned that MABCR has a training farm in Howard County. We'll see, it's something for me to explore here with all you knowleable folks, and I'm so looking forward to talking about all things Border Collie ! Finn is our 2nd BC. Our first was a classic black/white rough , a beautiful boy named Scout.Scout went to the Rainbow Bridge last September at the age of 12 1/2. The last year and a half of his life he struggled with spinal/disc/vertebrae disease. Scout's mother was Jim Shearer's Lass.Coincidentally, when we got Finn's papers ( ABCA ) Lass is Finn's great great something grandmother. Well, I'm going to try and include a picture, and again, I'm so thankful this site exists for all of us who have been enchanted by Border Collies and love this breed !
