  1. Hello, and wow, I sign out for few weeks, come back and I can't even recognize the boards!!!

Anyhow, thanks for asking about Mollie! She had a miserable summer (lots of pain and such) but she seems to be in remission and back to her naughty self!:)

  2. Meet NEBCR's 'Lucky Seven'! http://www.nebcr.org/
  3. Oh and hey, could you ask the vet tech to dogsit while you are on vacation? That may help her decision-making a little.
  4. Jennifer, Please be VERY careful about what rescue you go with if you decide to do this. As always, there are great, responsible rescues that transport dogs up and make a great effort to find appropriate homes for them but there are also tons that hand puppies out at random parking lots on first come first serve basis. NEBCR keeps getting phonecalls from people who got their dogs through various rescues that brought them up, but clearly did not care if the dog would be a good match for the home and then refused to take the pup back when things don't work out. I am sure you know this already, but please check the rescue adoption procedures, spay/neuter policy, adoption contract, references etc. Thank you SO much for taking this little girl in, I have a black lab mix girl and so they are close to my heart (even though it was my boyfriend who wanted a lab... I just got sucked in ). Thanks!!!! Petra
  5. Have you ever taken a loan for a car or a house? If so, did you let the bank check your credit score? I bet most people think its acceptable for financial institutions to do this in order to 'assess the risk involved', right? Why isnt it acceptable for rescues to go and assess the risk involved with placing a dog? I volunteer for NEBCR and our volunteers spend tons of time and their personal money on turning these pathetic pups around and making them adoptable. Of course they go out of their way to find the perfect home for them. Wouldn't you do the same if you had to rehome your personal dogs? I sure would want to know where they will be living and I have no way of finding out without actually seeing the place.
  6. I am so sorry... sending lots of healing thoughts your way.
  7. We take both of our dogs canoeing. What I have found really helpful is the 'go to mat' command and before I took our bc out this summer, I actually spent a couple of afternoons practising in our yard. If your dog has a solid 'go to mat', you can easily move the mat from the ground to the canoe and he/she will stay there. I also used the clicker to teach 'in the canoe' command and practised just sitting in the canoe while rocking it from side to side in our yard (no doubt to our neighbors' great amusement). Only then we took it out on a lake. Enjoy!
  8. Mary, my dog's coat was the same when he came to rescue last fall. It was somewhat curly, wirey, brittle and he looked odd. I was actually wondering if he was pb the first few days. He was a stray, and I think it was a result of poor nutrition and a lack of care. His coat is now long and soft and he looks like a different dog altogether. Here is a picture of him the day after I picked him up from the shelter and another one few months later... i bet you will see a similar transformation. few months later
  9. Do you have the Control Unleashed book? If yes, look up the 'look at that' game and play it with Tobey around kids. If no, go to the nebcr vol list and search for barb's description of the game. You will find it useful. Good luck.
  10. You have gotten a lot of great advice on this thread. There are things you can do even if you live in a remote area and dont have an access to a veterinary behaviorist. We at NEBCR often work with the Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic and have had a great results using the methods they recommend. I hope you find the info below helpful. Good luck. http://www.tufts.edu/vet/behavior/clinical.shtml PETFAX If you don’t have time for a clinical appointment or don’t live near our North Grafton, Mass., facility, Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic offers a fax-based, remote consultation service. Dr. Moon-Fanelli provides a behavior history form that allows you to describe your pet’s behavior problem in detail. We also encourage you to videotape the problem behavior if possible. You can mail or fax the behavior history form to our clinic. Within four to five business days of receiving your form, we will send you a five to ten page document with additional handouts describing the causes and reasons for the behavior problem and a plan to solve it. We encourage you to share this consultation response with your local veterinarian for assistance in managing the behavior problem. The fee for PETFAX is $250 and includes a six-month period for telephone follow-up consultations. Please call Ronni Tinker (508-887-4640) for the necessary forms to initiate the consult, or visit the PETFAX website to download PETFAX forms. Back to the Top VETFAX This is a veterinarian–to–veterinarian consultation service for animal behavior problems. You and your referring veterinarian provide a written account of the behavior problem via behavior history forms and mail or fax this report to Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic. Dr. Dodman and his assistant will fax or mail a three to six page consultation response to the referring veterinarian within one week. For more information, please call Pat Goodhall at 508-887-4678. Your charge for this service will be determined by your local veterinarian. Back to the Top Telephone Consultation Another consultation option is a direct telephone consult with Dr. Alice Moon-Fanelli. The fee for a 30-minute telephone consult is $62 and a 60-minute telephone consult costs $125. The fee for a telephone consult does NOT include follow-up phone calls or emails. You'll need to submit a Behavioral History Form beforehand, which will be reviewed by Dr. Alice Moon-Fanelli prior to your telephone consult. Informational handouts that supplement the advice provided will be mailed to your home. To schedule a telephone consult and get a Behavioral History Form, please call Ronni Tinker at 508-887-4640. She will arrange for Dr. Alice Moon-Fanelli to call you at a prearranged date and time. Note: some behavior problems are not best addressed via a 30 or 60 minute telephone consult. Whether your pet's behavior problem can be adequately attended to in a 30 or 60 minute telephone consult will be determined after we receive your pet's Behavioral History Form.
  11. Yay! Congrats Tim, Izzy and Tobey! We look forward to seeing you at Dog Dayz!
  12. Kristen, don't assume that the shelters will call you if they get him. Even if you left the info and talked to them, they may not bother to call you if he shows up (speaking of personal experience here). Call them every day or every other day and remind them. Also, try shelters out of your area and keep checking petfinder. I know someone who lost a dog and the dog showed up a couple month later at an SPCA some 40miles away -- he was lucky the dog was posted on petfinder... Oh, and try breed rescues if you haven't already so they can keep an eye out... Good luck! Petra
  13. If I were a dog, I think I would prefer to go to a new good home over having my neck shocked with an electric current, but that's just me...
  14. Roanne, where in upstate New York are you? If you are interested in placing your dog through rescue, please contact either us (New England Border Collie Rescue) at info@nebcr.org or Glen Highland Farm www.glenhighlandfarm.com.
  15. I live in a city apartment with no yard so dog parks come in handy. That said, I only go to one of the parks around here -- its giant (maybe 40 acres or so?), it has trails, fields, woods, a creek and even a lake for swimming. Plenty of room to avoid other dogs/people if you have the desire to do so, but those of us that go there pretty much know each other, so its a fairly safe environment for the dogs. It has no fence, so it does not attract people with dogs they have no control over. It's operated by the county and you can get a yearly pass for $35 (its free btw the Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends). Oh, and if you like to travel, you may like this picture of my favorite dog park in Prague -- even has an outdoor cafe where you can hang out with your dog/s!

    So sorry to hear that.

    I am so sorry.
  18. I also split Frontline -- the pharmacist at our local Rite Aid gave me a free syringe and a vial. And 'wow' about the fleas. I brought a foster dog home last fall only to realize that there were fleas crawling all over her -- Frontline killed them within 24 hours and whatever was in the house ended up hopping back on the dogs and dying as well. My Czech vet claims that we should rotate flea and tick prev. products every few months or they stop working...

  20. Hi there Chris! I forgot about the Calvin sticker -- love it! And yes, I will be happy to let you know when the stickers are done. People seem to notice them... We recently got a call from a guy in New Mexico who saw an NEBCR sticker on someone's van! We couldnt help him (but directed him to rescues in his area), but it was good to know that people actually pay attention to these!
  21. Ha! I forgot you were the one making those. They are AWESOME. I almost got one at the NEBCR store, but none looked anything like Murf. So Liz, what do I have to do to make you spend your moving time painting a strangely looking tri-colored, split faced, merle dog with airplane ears and chicken legs? PS fyi for those of you thinking I was looking for fancy colors -- I always wanted a handsome smooth-coated, prick eared dog with lots of ticking... then they made me foster the fluffy goofball and he refused to leave.. honest!
  22. I am thinking I need a bc sticker or a magnet on my car . We are coming up with NEBCR stickers soon but meanwhile, I am curious to see what others have done... So, can you run out and take a picture for your cars/windows/bumpers and share them with us? Or at least tell us what you got!
  23. Yes, you can watch other DVD formats on your computer (both Macs and PCs) but after you switch regions four times, the last region you watched gets locked on the harddrive and you will never be able to watch any other regions. So if the fourth region you watched was European and you are in the US you will no longer be able to watch US movies on your computer. So be careful. Alternatively, it is my understanding that there are softwares out there that allow you to switch between regions...
  24. My female is not reactive off leash either... unless its a puppy. Puppies are bouncy and move in a 'weird' way that freaks her out. I dont think its that unusual.
