  1. Another question already Sorry. Would this be a good tester to get ? http://www.amazon.com/AlphaTRAK-Blood-Glucose-Monitoring-System/dp/B007Z0XULY/ref=pd_sim_petsupplies_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0WKKBWXH389FD91CK4NX
  2. Thank you for the encouragement, his blood sugar was 450 fasting so the vet wants us to start the insulin tomorrow. He is just waiting for the anemia test to come back to see if its treatable or not. I guess its all the unknown that is scary but we are committed to giving him the best care we can. My wife has diabetes which she manages very well, the difference is that she can tell when her Blood sugar is getting low and then has to eat something and all is well.So we will need to learn the signs on how Bam Bam reacts. Will keep you posted and I am sure we will have tons more questions. Thank you
  3. Our 11 yo male Bam Bam was diagnosed with diabetes today. He may also be anemic, the blood test will be back in a couple of days. We are supposed to go back to the Vet Wednesday to get all the details on how to take care of him. My wife and I are so scared of all the unknowns that are coming our way.Searching Google has made it worse. I was just wondering if anyone else has a buddy with diabetes and could enlighten us on what we may expect. I just hate the idea of giving him shots twice a day and pricking his ear to get blood tests. Is it possible for him to have a quality rest of his life? How would we know if his Blood sugar is too low etc. Any help would be much appreciated at this time as we want nothing but the best for Bam Bam. Thanks Everyone Frank
  4. My 2 love "Cheez its" they are very handy and cheap. The salt content has me concerned somewhat so I dont give them alot. Would anyone else worry about cheez its.
  5. We have the same problem with Pebbles, will be watching this also to get help.
  6. No Pebbles still nipps at his heals even when they just play, yes she will stop when i ask her to but then the next chance she get she will nipp at his heals again. This may need to be a new topic lol.Any ideas?????
  7. We didnt name them, that was their names when we adopted them from previouse owner. We get asked that question alot lol.
  8. I'am trying to teach Pebbles and BamBam to fetch.I hope this does not get to long but let me explain. Both had no interest in tennis balls.I finally got Bam Bam to chase one but Pebbles would run to nip at his heels because of this he stopped.I tried putting Pebbles on a leash but I think hs was still afraid she would do it.I tried putting her in the house while I threw the ball for Bam Bam but she just went crazy barking and whining, now Bam Bam wont even chase a ball. I can get Pebbles to chase a ball with peanut butter in it but all she does is lick it,wont pick it up or anything. If I get the ball and throw it she will again chase and Lick. So my problem is two fold One how to I get Bam Bam to chase a ball again and what to do with Pebbles while Iam playing with him,or how to break Pebbles from chassing Bam Bam and biting his heals. She also will bite at his heals when they are playing Two, How do I get Pebbles to do more then lick the ball. Both doga are rescue and they have come along way,I just want to get them into this for more exercise and activity. thank you everone here has been great in helping us so far
  9. We have 2 rescue dogs,Pebbles and Bam Bam,they came from a family that mistreated them and didnt take good care of them. They didnt do any training at all and pretty much ignored them. We have had them for nine months, when we first got them we couldnt get them to come to us at all, especially if you had anything in your hand. Now we can get them to come to us as long as we are in the backyard. And both have become very loving towards us and always excited to see us. Pebbles the female has fear agression problems with other people and other dogs, but with us she is fine. Not sure how to go about resolving this. Bam Bam the male if we let him out of the back yard he takes off and acts like he cant hear.He is a great dog with no other problems except is shy with other people and when trying to train him for recall sometimes he comes but mostly just keeps going and acts like he doesnt hear us.He will look back and just keep going. He always comes back but when is is good and ready. They are both so much better then when we first got them but still have a way to go, I guess my question is do we just give them more time and keep working with them? And will they ever forget what happened to them with their previouse owners? We are going to keep them no matter what but it would be so nice if we could get them to be well mannered and dedicated like most Border Collies are. We wish we could get a professional trainer but living in Southern Utah not many available,we are loving owners but will be the first to admit we are not trainers. Any advice on this would be really appreciated or if you have any other questions for us let us know. Thank you ( Sorry this got kinda long)
  10. Thanks everyone, The reason they cant come in is that we have another female dog that we have had for 13yrs and her and Pebbles ( the female BC ) just dont get along if we arent watching them constantly. We turned down the heat in the dog house to 40 so we will see what happens with that. We tried last night putting them in the kitchen away from the other dog but all they wanted to do was go outside. As soon as we let them out they laid on their blankets by the siding glass door. Iam thinking about scrapping the dog house and make them a mini version that will fit on the porch. You are right though they seem to do well with the cold, last night it was 32 and both were out in the snow. What worries us is that we know they can be stubborn and like little children that need to be told what to do. What I really need to know is what are the signs that they are getting to cold? We know this isnt long term as our other dog is old and should she pass they will come inside ( probably slap in the middle of our bed) but until then we have to protect them and make sure they are happy. Thanks everyone for the info
  11. The beginning of last summer we adopted 2 Border Collies, both are 3 years old and are brother and sister. We know that last winter they stayed outside and temps dropped into single digits alot and they didnt have alot of protection from the snow and cold. We have a doghouse for them with heat in it that we keep around 50 degrees. The problem is they both prefer sleeping on the blankets we have next to our sliding glass doors. It is covered there but still not out of the wind. We are just concerened that when it gets into the teens at night will they be ok. Is there a way to check to see if they are in fact warm enough. Thank you for any help.
  12. Thank you for the info. We do free feed so we will stop that. They are both 3 years old and were miss treated before we got them and didnt have alot of trust in humans. We have been getting them around our friends alot ( who also have treats) and they are settling down nicely. Its just amazing how fast they learn but how long it takes to get their trust back. Will try and post pictures soon. Again thanks for your help
  13. We have 2 BC's that we have adopted about 2 months ago. Both are great in the back yard and come to me as soon as called. But there are times when they just act def, like they just dont hear me at all. This has happened also outside the back yard, they start running away and act like they cant hear and just keep going. We are using the recall methods we have seen in the forums is it just going to take more time? Also I read about yummy treats or jackpots. Would someone let me know what they use. Maybe Iam just using the wrong treats. Thanks for any help
