  1. I am posting them from here on a Mac
  2. wholehearted agreemeentnt on the posts and the most important thing is where did he come from and what was his/her life there? We did a border rescue and for 2 weeks Ellie would not come out of the crate; didn't know a ball from a bollweevil; didn't even look at the cats and in general was comatose and this was all an aside from being PETRIFIED of em the grizzly bear. With months(4) of TLC by The Fabulous Ms. Leslie she was able to come and go as she pleased thoguh the dog door was a scary situation as was walkking behind the couch through an open door looking at me. Now whe takes her toys outside in to the yard, 4 MONTHS later and chases the cats. DOes she make eye contact with you? Ellie is very leery of me around the house but now she has discovered baseball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONce I found I could substitute the word "ready" for come she was delirious. Full tilt boogie in the big field with bat and kong ball. SHe doesn't bring it back closer then 25 feet or so but she gets the run and the exercise which has boosted her appetite and will then make her feel stronger then it would follow less fearful but that is just a guess. We also leashed here which she just loved before we started baseball and walked the perimeter of the ranch every chance I got. She lived in a cage for the first 10 months of her life and I am sure was physically mistreated so the work is there in front of us. HEr herd instinct is strong. Other dogs had little if any interest to her but now we can all go play ball and she will actually come to me for a nose touch. And these 2 dogs play full contact football....once the other dog is gone she won't come near me again. The Fabulous Ms. Leslie can get her and she'll come to her but Me? no bueno. one day my smiling Irish eyes will get her. She recently came close to the deck during supper with the other dog so I was tossing her some meat etc (I know bad owner but bad habits are easier to change than no contact at all) and we had the world famous BC owner eye contact where I knew what she wanted and she knew I knew so we left ASAP for the pasture and wild dog play. THids time she did come ot me enough for a nose touch. THat was cause for headline news. She has a long way to go but she has already come so far and that makes my heart happy.
  3. Sure sounds familiar when we got Ellie she would not even come out of the crate for 2 weeks and was deathly afraid of me. It took almost 3 months of hard work on the oart of The Fabulous Ms. Leslie to even be somewhat mobile as she was caged for months at atime and completely ignored. She is still a bit leery of me but I am finally able to tell her ready and pick up a bat and she'll run like heck after the ball I mean full tilt. Bringing it back is not always on the top of her list! I do let her work the cats a bit and she likes to keep circling the horses though not behavior I want all the time. Correcting her is very difficult so we'll spoil her first then when the full bordergirl comes out we can redirect some of that energy. She won't play in the yard but man once she is out she can go. SHe is about 14 months now and we figure by behavior really about 6 months. It took almost 3 months just to get her off the leash and if we leave the yard get open when she does get freaked she can run home. Now she even chases swallows after a rain. IT surely takes loads of work and boatloads of patience but she'll be a great dog. SHe loves to herd and work but the basic come sit stay ball etc eludes her. IT took em some time too find words that woudl mean the same thing but would not trigger a bad memory. People like you are gems and though progress is slow get input from other people who only see her now and then. You know wow the last time I saw you you were knee high to a grasshopper and now you can look me in the eye!!!!!
  4. so far the Harvest Baked Pupppy seems to be the only chow Ellie eats. I have had some picky BC's in my time but Ellieis worse than Napoleon at a teaparty. She does like the Harvest Baked Puppy with a liitle raw meat on top. I knnow I know she needs to gain about 4 #'s
  5. out here in CO there are a lot of McNabs and I had never heard of them. TUrns out the best dog ever Katie Walsh had a hair of that dog. She was killed at the ranch and replaced with Ellie a full papered rescue BC who is comingg along nicely; very nicely. Now if I could only carry that patience to the rest of my life!!!!! THey are some hard working critters. I think the mcnab gave Katie her incredible disposition a sort of lets always go do something but I can wait for a spell. Anyway if the mesa ranchers want some new blood in pool then we may be able to use Katies uncle for the task. AND BEFORE I get jumped all over about having more pups this is a working ranch community, dogs sometimes lead short lives nad we have not decided yet and still ahve some time. BTW on the pet store visit once I get Ellie's papers I am going to shut her breeder down as I believe he is overstretched and mistreats his dogs.
  6. anyone know why pictures won't post? I know this is the wrong place but I wanted all to see heer progress. I just cannot seem to add pictures anymore
  7. still cannot upload pictures
  8. can't upload pictures.I'll try later
  9. Thanks to everyone that has given such great advice on Ellie from parvo to rescued border. I wanted y'll to have an update on the girl. MAN IS SHE ONE CHANGED DOG. We had been leash walking her around the ranch and around the ranch....so3 days ago we decided it was time to try a free spirit and let her loose. That was one HAPPY dog. SInce then she has been around all the holiday company and a few other dogs with mostly delight. She will come to a whistle and can sit and wait at the gate till we get through and/or over. SHe is not 100% there yet but she is damn close. She will chase a stick, run full tilt, circle the horses, herd the cats with a full BC crouch and eye. She will hang out on the couch of an evening after her ice cream treat. All this exercise has given her an appetite. There was a bit of anxiety when we let her go butthis dog is all BC. We must have gotten her ojut of jail in time as her instincts are there. And she is fast!!! I have posted some recent photos. SHe no longer looks like a lost refugee and if we leave the yard gate open when we or one of us is out workikng with her and she has had enough she heads for the barn. SHe is still a bit leery of being captured but only a bit. And now the real fun begins. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL and I'll keep you posted once she starts playin ball frisbee etc. Bless y'all :D
  10. heck Josey Wales, Katie Walsh and now Ellie all like(d) to eat mostly cat scat; some of which I think may be bobcat. They also loved horse apples. Katie loved it particularly when I kicked up road apples and she could catch them. Man she was one great dog.
  11. since I started this thread the breeder or so he calls himself said she had had a bad case of parvo and they nursed her through it though some of the other littermates died. They did it with goats milk and I have to say this place was like a POW camp and it was all I could do not to cram him into the cage; one of many littel tiger cages there. Ellei was 1o months old when we got her and according to the vet, our usual who is very good said she appeared to be ok. I DON"T KNOW ABOUT THE ORIGINAL VACCINES. I do know she is coming along quite well and is now 1 year old but acts about 12-14 weeks in the gourd. We need to get another local pup tp help teach her how to play; my knees are getting sore chasing the ball and frisbee. My original question was well answered and it is TERRIFIC that so many of yoju ahve in depth knowledge on these topics. SHe is beginning to learn come stay sit and when she can come to a whistle or call then she gets off the leash. Thank you all for the information and help. Everyday she is better and some days are huge jumps. It was interstring to read the thread about the 9 month fall back terrible 2's etc. This gives hope as she was one damaged chickadee but this place is a wellspring of love. That always works. Oour other two borders made my life as y'all know
  12. my error she had parvo and survived. She is almost 1 year now and I think she had the parvo when she was a pup. We got her terrified and abused at 10 months
  13. Katie used to get in the crick chasing sticks and sort of wash off but she would stay in there waiting for more sticks just shiverin away until she finally had to come out and warm up by chasing frisbess. After all they have that Irish herritage and it does get cold there....as I well know. Ellie is much longer haired so we'll be seeing she likes to just jump in the ditch
  14. I may be wrong on that last about the parvo vaccine as I was a bit out of it when the Katester was killed and then Ellie rescued from the disgusting camp. So don't beleive too mmuch of the timeline. I'll look to natural diet but Ellie eats well and is not becoming MUCH less fearful of me and is realizing I speak BC. That helps
  15. I remember when we went to this horrid place to pick up Ellie the breeder, who will be revealed one day, said she had had parvo as did some of the other dogs but he nursed them through using mostly fresh goats milk. My vet gave her a clean bill and all the shots but I wonder what other lasting damage could have been done besides the heart. Isn't that where parvo causes the most harm and could Ellie's lethargy be due to heart damage where it could affect O2 transfer. SHe is the most laid back BC I ahve ever had. Of course she could be gaming me a bitve but I am just wondering and could use some words of experience on this. SHe would have been 3-4 months old when she had it. I think most of her brothers and sisters died. OnceI get the papers for Ellie from this cretin I shall expose him. I thought of a horse whip then and there but was so grief stricken over losing Katie that rescue ws boilin in my blood. Enoough of that Please advise about the parvo. Thanks all and Ellie gives these pages 4 paws up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. yeah I sure hope so grace a God and the ditch don't rise. She'll come around. She can't resist it and once she finds the ball and the frisbee then Lefty will wear out but not me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Wheeeeeee
  17. some day Ellie some day I miss all of that....more than anyone except you folks would understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. just two new oictures of the Ellie or as she is sometimesd known Eleanore Frances. she does have her moments and of course has my heart and I'll get hers one day
  19. whenever she gets in the ditch or the crick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This our third BC and oh yeah once BC #2 Katie got skinked. And this is good Lefty and I were in the shower the curtain parts she jumps in and there in the shower just lookin up like what's going on guys and when are WE going to do something was BC#1 Josey Wales; only bath she ever had. :D
  20. Did you ever get her to work? in the truest BC word ball, frisbee, agility. I surely miss Katie as she was getting so good at all of that but oh well move on. We don't have continuos stock just in the spring but a ball must look to her like a moon of Jupiter looks to me. Cute but what do I do with it. Neighbors ahve bearded collie pup so after the 4th we can set a play date. Play is almost an alien concept. Do red BC's have different learning sets than other colors? I think of Maurenn OHara in the Quiet Man.. She will come to me if I can have her on a leash otherwise we have created a game to get her where she feels safe enough to let me near; better than TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. I know what you meant! You just couldn't say such a handsome charming elegant :D
  22. Thanks all for the continued support. She is a handful at least from the emotional stage but 2 steps forward 1 step back. Someone mentioned a rescued red BC do you think Red dogs are more hmm what would be the word sensitive? She is getting better on the leash and around most people but me so far. A neighbor is bringing her bearded collie pup ove to play later this week and that should be good because Ellie has been in solitary for a long time and now the freedom rings. We did take her off the leash in the back 12 acres and she didn't run away but kept her distance no more than I would expect a working BC to do which was circle us and keepl;ooking until the freedom was too much and shewent back to the house. If we had left the gate open I think she would have gone right on in. SO things are looking up!!!!!!
  23. don't know about ellie but the our last Bc the late great Katie Walsh would just go and go even in the heat. Ambient might be 80-90 but out in the sun it's probably over 100. She didn't know the meaning of the word stop but once she did get hot then she would lie down, in the su, for a few minuyes to cool off and catch her breath but within minute sthe frisbee woudl be flyin. We'd head for the crick after 1/2 hour or so and then she was in heaven. Ellie loves to chase the stream from the garden hose when she gets hot full on stream right in the old kisser. Well she does it for Lefty and one day she'll do it for4 me!!!!! Well she did it once until she looked up and realized it was the grizzly bear and that slowed her down. The first date is always the hardest isn't it........
  24. yes m'am that is me the big scary dog eater.......but there are very few women who can resist the Irish charm Later today she may get out and off the leash for the first time. :D If she'll play chasing the garden hose water later then it'll be "she oughtas be in pictures hahhaha. It has been a challenge and will continue to be so but I knew a lot of Vietnam vets, me included, that were jumpy scared edgy but lots of love work attention sure brought them around. I know Ellie, named after my mom, will be the delightful dog I can see deep in her eyes. Thanks to all and a Happy fathers day to all
