  1. I'm a little surprised this guy could say this with a straight face. IMO, dachshunds are nasty little dogs. Their breeding purpose has already been mentioned by someone else and based on that I'm not sure how someone so involved with the breed can say "it's not in the dogs' nature." Come on!! Anyway, I'm prejudiced against the breed as I was viciously attacked by an unprovoked dachshund almost 30 years ago. I was a tall child and the dog broke skin on two spots on my upper thighs plus the doozy where he got me on my calf. I still have scars.
  2. My vet told me that hookworms are not easy to get rid of so don't be too discouraged. Also, giardia often goes unnoticed, especially if there is something else that can explain whatever symptoms the dog has.
  3. In the name of sticking with the topic, I'll say I'm not impressed with Iams ingredients list. But, I also thought I'd mention that I just switched from Canidae after being an absolute evangelist for the product for three years. They changed their ingredients and my dogs objected. They've been skipping more meals and just generally not eating with much enthusiasm. I got a bag of California Naturals Chicken and Rice. Their ingredients are pretty close to what Canidae used to be and the woman at the pet supply store I shop at told me she's been assured by their rep that the ingredients won't be changing. I hope my dogs do well on it. They've only had Canidae since I got them. Laura
  4. How much of the powder do you give? I know we give the horses two scoops per feeding at the barn I work at once a week. Can you give them too much?
  5. We'll have to agree to disagree on what harassment is. I personally think that making someone's email public so that a large group of people can each "send a thoughtful email" constitutes an organized harassment campaign. I just think people might want to be careful about what they do with any personal information they have access to. Using the information that Robin posted or writing to your congressman would be a much more productive use of energy, IMO.
  6. While what these men did is deplorable, I'm not sure a harassment campaign is legal either.
  7. One of my rescues had to be "bribed" to eat for a while after we got him. Putting enticements like cheese and yogurt in his food got his appetite going while he recovered from kennel depression. That being said, I got some advice on being pretty hard nosed about feeding time and it has worked out for us. I put the food down, they eat it in a reasonable amount of time (after I release them) or it gets picked up and they wait until the next scheduled feeding. I can't remember the last time anyone skipped a meal.
  8. I've noticed my runner ducks are getting "randy" again with the longer days. I wish they would lay some eggs!
  9. I thought about using lime in my pig pen but the packaging warned against ingestion. I was worried about run off into their wallow which they drank out of (and peed in) regularly.
  10. I've always heard that you should never shave a double coated dog???
  11. My dogs do really well on just Canidae. 3 cups a day for each girl and 2 cups a day for the boy.
  12. My vet explained to me that Lepto is anything but self limiting and easily treatable. I would say that because I live in the country I have to vaccinate my dogs for it, but all the wild animals that carry it (opossums, skunks, groundhogs, raccoons) live "in town" too. I'll be visiting the other thread to learn about the alternative vaccines being discussed though.
  13. This made me laugh so hard. It's like something out of a comedy. Not that poorly behaved dogs are funny... So, did she decide that Lucia must not really be a border collie because she was so well behaved?
  14. I'm having a hard time with "just put the dog down" based on the limited information here. Is there another thread somewhere about Ben's issues that has more details about his problems? What kind of behaviorist did you take him to (not everyone who calls them self a behaviorist is actually qualified)? How much exercise is he getting? Under what circumstances did he break his leg? Have you tried NILIF? Like I said, maybe I missed something in another post that I can't find and I know that some dogs just aren't "right" and can't be fixed but not every dog with aggression issues is a lost cause.
  15. I'm not sure how this thread became associated with the "vets just vaccinate for the cash" argument (I can't find someone who pushed that point of view) but my personal experience is that a vet with a fancy office and a lot of overhead is much more expensive and pushes a lot more procedures than an equally knowledgeable vet with a basic office and low overhead. I switched from a vet with an extremely well appointed office and a large staff to a vet with one employee and 1970's paneling on the walls because the tasteful color scheme just wasn't as important to me as being able to afford good health care for my animals.
