1. Oh your daughter and dog are beautiful. If you have any questions, there are a lot of people willing to help. Bookmark this page. Welcome aboard.
2. Oh she's already got control of the the remote. She looks great!!!
3. I say "enjoy" your dog- no matter what you do with it. I purchased Usher as a service dog and now he is getting me back into the working field- therapy- I call it. It's YOUR dog, you can do whatever you want with it. Agility, obedience, flyball. Heck, no one is turning you in for a PAL or ILP dog. It's your choice. Just keep your dog happy and active. That's the best advice I can give you. P.S. My spelling isn't so good either, especially in a dark room. LOL.
4. I have one MasterCard just for the dogs. Since I can claim my disabilities, they go on the card. Food, also can go on the card. I kind of feel like I'm cheating, buy feeding my service dog. NO herding lessons go on the card- they are paid for in cash, to help the trainer. Obedience lessons are a "right off". Though I don't make enough money to even claim taxes. But for some of you, like Bexie, you might want to think about this.
5. we are coming along very slowly. Yet we are coming along. Thanks Haleigh and the doggies. Oh- P.S. I'm the one with the skinny legs- LOL
6. For those not on Usher's blog. Here are a few pic's from today. His out run is increasing into a 2 acre field. I still look like a case from the "nut farm" with my warm clothes. I'm really fond of my new trainer. He trains all breeds. Has 2 BC's there. He absolutely loves Usher. I found out after all these years, I have been making mistakes myself. Go figure. I'm not perfect. LOL. Hope you enjoy the photos and if you want to join Ushers blog- just e-mail me.
7. I have one of those. Her name is Bliss. She does NOT like toys. She enjoys a hoof or a Kong. We are trying to help her play. She likes the chasing of toys but just does not know what to do when the toy stops. We put the other dog up and try dragging the toy around so she'll get the idea of playing. She is a sweetie pie and mostly just wants lovin' but has to be closely supervised when other dogs are playing because she tends to bite when they go for the ball, frisbee, etc. I have no clue what happened to her in her former life. But be careful. My "main" dog had 8 stitches because of her fear or aggressiveness of others running for objects. I'd start out with playing with people. That's what I did. Praise, praise praise and make it fun. Obedience can be fun, too. It serves 2 purpureus. Training the dog and making a bond between you both. Lots of treats, which no dog can resist. Plus it will be easier to place her. With her going to a large farm, she needs a solid recall. BTW- both of your dogs are stunning. Good luck!!
8. So happy to hear she's on the mend. Can't wait until she's home. Hooves are cheap. Go get more.
9. Wow- 8 in a litter. Is that big time to me ? They all look healthy and strong. Well bred dogs. Only wish the best of luck for Ellie and for Dianne's big time to keeping the puppies healthy. I'm sure she will do right by her dogs, after reading her blog. Sounds like she's been though this before and is quite capable. All my best and happy pup pinging- is that a word? Well, it should be!! Hmmmmmmmmmm.......puppie time?
10. Oh, another one passes. I just hate this thread. Sleep well Flick. You led a good life and have many friends waiting for you at the bridge. My deepest sympathies, The only problem with dogs, is they just don't live long enough. She had such a good life. Be proud that you gave her all you could. I'm so sorry.
11. I'd go get some blood work done, just in case of a high thyroid. Just to be on the safe side. I'm always quite careful with my critters. Good luck Joy, we all love you! The money for the blood work will ease your mind. Well worth it.
12. He still looks like a "aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh" that blaze will close in, so you will have a nice wide blaze- JMO. Look at the ears, they already look like they might be standing up. I just love prick eared dogs. I think you should go with your feelings. They all are well bred. Maybe, ...........do you have a choice? .........to see them when they are playing and how he interacts with you before they are all taken? How many pups are there? Hard to tell with them in a bundle? So happy for you Ellie. THIS is your trial dog!!! Only best wishes. I don't envy the potty training, but can I come over and smell the puppy breath?
13. Oh wow- save those pics. Have you picked our "yours" yet? Which one? Which one? I have one of Usher that big. Just to show off. LOL. Still going with the name "Moss"? You are so lucky, Ellie!!!
14. I am so sorry. I really hate to read this section. As always, Buster puts up a great poem. This is a bad time of the year to lose someone in your life. My thoughts are with you.
15. I'm so sorry for your little one. Keep us informed. We are keeping our fingers and paws crossed here. It sure sounds like parvo to me. A very long time ago, I had a litter, sold 2 they were fine. The 3rd, they said it had parvo. I took one pup to the vet and sure enough it had parvo. I told my neighbors, who's pup was always in my yard. They told me theirs had just got out of the vet for parvo- grrrrr. WHY didn't you tell me when you knew I had pups on the ground? I don't know, was their answer. The pup I sold, I gave them their check back- said I could not afford the vet bills, but would take the pup and take care of it myself. They chose their own vet. The other 2 left, I brought them through it. Just plain luck. The first 2 sold did NOT have parvo. Best of wishes with the puppy. Let us know. If you know anything about pups, maybe you can administer the IV fluids yourself and save yourself a ton of money. I am so sorry.
16. Yes, there are some goats out there. They seem to break off from the sheep, which helps Usher with his "look back" and keeping them all together. At first we just worked the sheep, but this gives him a little more "thinking time" on how to keep the entire flock together. Thanks for the comment. It's a new camera. Nothing fancy and I'm still trying to learn how to work it. My BF took these. He's less shaky than I am. LOL
17. He seems to do fine with all kinds of livestock- not taking him on cattle yet. I did ask a question because I hadn't gotten much responses to this there. I made a thread in the Training Section (Most said "Go for it) re: working and snow- I would love to hear "good or bad, not brutal" but comments- Also, when your boots stick in 4 inches, I don't think you should work the sheep- that's why we stayed OUT of the larger field. If any of you would like a link to my blog- just PM me. It's private, But I'd love to share with my friends.
18. It was very cold, so notice my fashion statement. The ice was pretty hard and I was worried about the sheep's feet getting hurt and also Usher got a pad or two bloodied up, so we kept the lesson in the smaller pen where it had been worked up a bit. My trainer came in to show "rusty old me" that maybe I should send a different direction due to the show being so heavy and stay around where it was less beforehe could plow (and I wouldn't fall down) Usher didn't mind the snow, his pads are fine now. Can't wait for the rain and the bigger field. Please excuse if pics are large. I got the new camera, but the class doesn't start until after January.
19. I showed in obedience in the UKC. Seemed not so bad.
20. Oh- my BF got another laser beam from a Xmas bag- I told him "You open this in the house and you are GONE" Didn't mean to sound so bitchy, but Usher got "hooked" on one a 4 months and we actually had to MOVE to get him away from it. Maybe some dogs that don't have ANY prey drive might service, but leave your others at HOME. The laser beam is the worst thing for a border collie. Been there- was warned- didn't listen- thought it was funny. PLUS paid the price!!!! NO LASER BEAM!!! I hope you all take heed to this or you will be in trouble. Just my dearest opinion and believe me- I have been there and done that.
21. I know that through the years, some are more sensitive to others. When I had 6, everyone in the group realized "Miss Lacey" rode in the front seat and they rode in the canopy. It was something they expected. Miss Lacey was here first and they just figured out that was the way it was. She was TOTALLY the alpha dog (even over me at first-my first BC) I learned after that and some obedience classes. Now, I only have 2. Usher and my rescue, Bliss, which my Mom refuses to let me find a home for- she loves her and I can't take that away from her. Always a 3rd crate for another (after Christmas and snow) Dog's seem to know their place in the pack. For me, with only 2 right now -whew- When they get a "cookie" I say their name first - they both must sit in front of me - I say Bliss, cookie- then she takes it- then "Usher, cookie" and he takes it. It's a form of sharing and they know that I always have 2. YET......they must wait their turn patiently for their treat. Works for me. I hope I helped a tab bit. OH- P.S. Puppytoes, have you tried changing roles? Giving Orbit the treats first and see what happens? I don't let Usher go through doors before me, as he's a service dog- I always tell him "wait" and "Ladies first". LOL. Like he gets the idea of "Ladies first" They are so smart, I'm sure he's got it figured out. Let us follow all our your progress. It's nice to hear how good things turn out
22. Take lots of puppy pics. They grow up so fast. Looks like great bloodlines. Good luck with the pup!!
23. Usher and Bliss like other dogs, but they seem to go to border collies for some reason. I have no clue why, but they tend to like their own breed. Odd, isn't it? How would they know?
24. My last foster was kept in a back yard most of his life and "clingy" like that. He walked well on a leash, because he didn't want to leave my side for ANY reason. I had to make sure that he was on the left side- just my way of training-but, him being so attached to me made it easy. He wasn't fond of dog treats, but people food he liked, so I lured him into the sit position with a piece of cheese and clicked as soon as his little butt hit the pavement, then gave him the cheese or hot dog piece. As soon as he learned that clicker noise, he was great. He was pretty easy to crate train with a little help with the hot dog and keeping him in the same room with the other dogs. It was like "oh, all dogs sleep in crates, ok...here's my Kong (the other's got theirs also during that time) and I'm a happy dog. There was a little whining at first- I ignored it. Then it just quit. Mine was one I knew I had to find a home for right away, as he was so attached to me, I was worried about the placement of another home. Luckily, I found him a good "pet home". The man that took him saw him before I had finished more than I wanted to on training. He had lost his dog of 17 years 6 weeks before and was looking for another pet. When he saw him (he said "I will know when I find the right one for me") he was in love! I explained how shy the dog was and how little training I had put on him and that I only had the money for neuter and shots. He paid the heart worm test and meds and micro-chip. Turned out we go to the same vet and they told me I couldn't have found a better home. So I hope your beautiful dog turns out the same way that my last rescue did. I'm done until after Christmas. Taking a break. I only wish you the best of luck.
