  1. I haven't been on here in a long time. I guess I feel kind of ashamed to show my face in here nowadays. I had to give away my heeler/border collie mix and I have just been feeling terrible about it. I had a place to keep both of my dogs and had everything worked out. Since I am leaving for Basic training next month, I had it worked out that my folks were going to take care of both of my dogs for me and they had no problem with it. Unfortunately, my grandma passed away and my parents decided to take in her dog instead of finding a new home for it (which I completely understand!). I made a tough choice. I didn't want to dump the responsibility on them of caring for five dogs while I was gone (their two, my grandma's, and my two). So, I found a new home for my puppy to ease their burden. I completely trust the people I gave her too and I can see her all the time. She has an excellent, active family and I know she will be happy. I just feel so guilty about it. Even though I only had her for a short time, I loved that pup. I just feel like a terrible pet owner especially after having worked for a humane society-I now feel like I am no better than other owners who drop off their unwanted pets. Here is one of my last pictures I had taken of her (I miss you Gracie!): Spirit is doing very well. He has become adjusted to hanging out with my folk's dog pack and enjoys having a huge fenced in backyard to play in all day long with them. Our older dogs have even become more active with him around. Lately his primary job has been accompanying me on hikes down by the river which he thoroughly enjoys having the opportunity to stretch his legs and run. I just can't wait to be back out at the stables horseback riding with him this summer. Hopefully this fall we will start agility training. Hmm, I just realized I have no new pictures on this computer of him so this is an oldie.
  2. How sad. That is how we came to own a sheltie mix. My grandmother passed away and her dog had meant everything to her. My parents were not going to see her put in a shelter or put to sleep so now she is living with my folks, three other dogs to keep her company, and a huge fenced in backyard. I hope they are able to find homes for those two dogs.
  3. My golden retriever was very good at the "go potty" command. Everytime I wanted to take her for a walk, we would go to the front yard and I would give her the command. She was NEVER hooked up to her leash and allowed to go walking until she squatted and either went or pretended to. I know alot of the time it was pretending so she could get going. Spirit is picking up on the command. I will let him out the door and tell him to go potty and he'll run to his usual spot and relieve himself. Unfortunately I was not smart enough to think of using another command for pooping so it is always a quick pee for him. Gracie is young yet and I am also working on the "go potty" command with her. I have always found the command very useful especially when I am taking them out in public and don't want them going to the bathroom wherever they think they want to. I hate when someone lets their dog(s) mess in our yard and leave it for us to clean up.
  4. Well, about a month ago I adopted a BC/ACD mix puppy. She is now right around 12 weeks old approximately. Her name is Gracie and she is extremely smart and just adores my other BC, Spirit. Thought I would introduce her since I have been gone from the boards all summer. When I first brought her home... And a pic from today...
  5. On that link it says bidding is over for the item. I went to her store and she still has 50 listed as available. EBay I would be absolutely ticked if I found out somebody was using one of my pictures for profit without my permission. I hope this issue can be resolved.
  6. I've never seen a pit walked with a chain. I have seen a couple with the really thick, wide collars but that's about it. The pit bulls I have met have been some of the sweetest dogs I have ever had the chance to meet. Thankfully the Humane Society I volunteered for was willing to take in pits that had been abandoned at the pound so I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with many of them throughout the last few years. There were several that I would have loved to have taken home myself if I lived in a pit friendly apartment. It is unfair to generalize the majority of pit owners into the category that you described. I personally know many pit owners and they are family companions (and the dogs absolutely adore their children).
  7. I just ordered a leather collar off the gundog site with the ID plate attached. I absolutely hate all the jangly noise the 4 tags make that Spirit has on now. So, it will get rid of his ID tag. Once I leave Fargo I won't need his city tag anymore so all he'll have left are his microchip tag and rabies tag. If I had been smart I would have added "Microchipped" to the ID plate, so I may just order a new ID plate from their website and add that on their too. The noise drives me insane so Spirit never has his collar on when he's indoors. It is always replaced before I head outside.
  8. Make fun of my BC obsession? No, but my horse obsession yes. At first my folks were really against me getting a dog. Once I got him and they met him, they told me he was ugly (because he is a split face). Now that they have gotten to know him, they absolutely love him. They have even offered to take care of him over the summer while I'm on my internship. I told them no. I made my summer internship plans to make sure my dog could be included and tag along. Their offer really shocked me as they have said time and time again they will not have any more dogs in their household once the ones they have are gone. And, to top that off, they offered to keep him next school year when I transfer college to Montana. Again, I told them no. I will find a place to stay where I will keep my dog because he is that important to me. I'm really glad both of my parents like my dog as my mom dislikes my golden retriever which does live with them as she became a family dog.
  9. She's absolutely adorable! I wouldn't be able to wait to bring her home either. I ditto liking the name Summer.
  10. Congrats on your one month anniversary! I hope you have many, many more years to enjoy your wonderful companion.
  11. I've never heard of that happening. We keep our kibble in plastic bins and you can buy plastic bins at pet stores that are sold specifically as food bins. Good question.
  12. I would love to try Spirit on sheep but don't own any of my own. After my summer internship I will be moving to Montana and would really like to find a place where he can try his hand at herding. How do I go about finding stock dog trainers? How hard are they to find?
  13. If Spirit is dirty, I just rinse him off. Unless he really stinks and needs a good shampooing. He isn't too terribly fond of being brushed but knows he has to stay until I tell him he can leave. He does love being vacuumed with the hose though.
  14. I didn't realize Canidae had a lamb and rice formula (not availble in the store I purchased my ALS in). I might try a bag of that once Spirit gets through the Nutro.
