  1. Let's see... we all took a hurrication in '05 for Rita... This year DH took 3 horses and 4 dogs on hurrication for Ike. I stayed in Houston looking after 15 Customs dogs at IAH...
  2. Thing is, these Bills are being introduced nationwide along with MSN Bills... The wording tends to be very vague and definitely subject to interpretation and inevitably followed by "amendments" that drop the numbers of intact dogs allowed or drop the numbers of dogs you can own or you can't tether a dog for 'any' length of time or......
  3. Let's not forget growing puppy bodies whose growth plates are still, well, growing...
  4. I've got a really quick question... How does someone manage to dual register if ABCA doesn't recognize AKC? What am I missing that it is even possible?
  5. SB 1845 was referred to the State Affairs committee on Fri Mar 20th This MSN has exemptions only for dogs under 6 mos, 'conformation show dogs' and service dogs.... NO mention of any working dog...not even police k9s!, let alone working BCs or LGDs.
  6. For those of you in TX, y'all might want to take a look at the Bills being proposed this session...and some already in Committee... SB 1845 is a mandatory spay/neuter... HB 1982 is BSL by another name HB 458 allowing counties to limit numbers of dogs SB 634 is changing the language of the anti-tethering law we already have/ dog confinement http://lsspbc.com/blog/2009/03/13/txbills
  7. I used to recommend the board to others but I've pretty much quit. I find things a lot more confrontational than they used to be...
  8. You might want to take a look at the propsed Ill Dog Liscencing Breeder Act, strongly lobbied for by HSUS. The proposed wording doesn't bode well for small, hobby responsible breeders. That is contrary to the'public position' of HSUS. There's also a bill in OK involving limits on numbers of dogs that can be sold, traded or given away in a year (yep could affect rescue) HSUS is designating "Lobby Days" in every State...and members are actively involved in all the proposed legislations nationwide. Thing is, in the name of doing away with 'puppy mills' a LOT of good, responsible, hobby breeders are taking a hit. The regulations for kennels requirements or 'no more than 3 sexually intact dogs'... Little by little... How about the States where dogs can be seized without warrants and owners have no legal recourse? Oh, they could sue but their dogs may have already been PTS. Of course there are horrible situations out there...but too many of the decent and caring folks are getting caught in the crosshairs.... and JQPublic is clueless about how these changes will affect them too... <sigh>
  9. How up are folks on state and local legislation being proposed and current bills ?
  10. Part of the issue too is all the funding that HSUS gets from the average dog owning public that fund the push for the mandatory spay/neuter; dog limits, breed ban legislation, and all in favor of laws by communities/ States that encourage warrantless searches and sezures of personal property by AC ? There are currently 34 states considering limits on dog ownership...thing is once it is on the books it's a lot tougher to get rid of, if not impossible. HSUS is working on lobbying in every state to push their agenda. Right now Texas has a good anti-tethering law but a bill was introduced to not only ban tethering pretty much completely(owner presence) but included that any dog over 4 mos, if confined to a kennel, said kennel needs to be 150 square feet. Do the math and look at kennels that folks have. CA has their issues with their AR-inclined lawmaker... Who pushed closing equine slaughter that has led to horse rescues being overwhelmed/ horse abandonement and horse suffering by being sent to Mexico to be slaughtered... to say nothing of starving in pastures. One 'beneficial' warm and fuzzy action is leading to even more suffering. What has happened to common sense that we 'need' to have more laws to restrict and control every aspect of animal ownership and responsible owners get caught up in the appalling wording of these laws.... 'It doesn't apply to me.' Well yeah, it affects all of us.
  11. Teach SIT to greet over and over and over. no greeting UNLESS sitting. It should be to the point of being automatic. The more practice he gets jumping on people the more he'll do it. How about a long line or even converting a stall for when you can't keep direct supervision?
  12. True. PETA are extremists but HSUS is a lot more dangerous IMO. The public hears one thing yet they lobby for the exact opposite. Gotta wonder, right?
  13. Funny, in all this PETA talk no one has brought up H$U$ and their input (lobbying) across the country... BSL, Mandatory spay/neuter, dog limits. On the surface some of these may seem beneficial....until... AC knocks on your door....
  14. Give this pup time... His young world has just been turned upside down ....new home, new world... Here's a site you might find helpful http://www.fearfuldogs.com
  15. Do read that Ian Dunbar book. Sad that the pup didn't spend more time with his litter. His missing out on vital dog to dog interactions and learning bite inhibition. Don't wait till he's 12 weeks to socialize. You can do careful stuff now, particularly with a wide array of people. One of the biggest reasons for down the road behavior issues is LACK OF SOCIALIZATION. Around the 16 week mark that critical socialization window closes and a neophobia window opens. Of course one has to be fairly careful but exposure to 'known' puppy loving adult dogs is a good thing. Canine to canine manners are best taught by other canines. There are plenty of places too where you can take a pup to let him 'see' the world. Vets are starting to realize that the odds are greater that lack of socialization will 'harm' a dog versus the odds of 'catching something'. Have you looked into a puppy class? First round of shots is the norm as for requirements. HTH
  16. Another idea may be to try a harness... Change the 'picture' for the pup.
  17. I believe there is a Yahoo group for deaf dog owners and http://www.deafdogs.org
  18. Even though folks are focused on the cold (and with good reason )... Mental stimulation is a good thing...and can make for a tired dog.
  19. Some working K9s have had to have tails docked because of beating the tips raw on a continual basis... with no ill after effect...
  20. One color not often seen is my Molly's 'saddle pattern'...
  21. One thing you might want to look at is Dr Karen Overall's Protocol for Relaxtion.... (Google) Make sure you reward calm, quiet behaviour when you see it...Folks tend to focus on dogs when they are out of control and tend to forget the low key praise when they are 'being good'.
  22. Think too what kind of emotional effect your reactive dog can have on these young dogs (who are at a rather impressionable age).
