  1. Dramamine works great for Jake. Is is possible for dogs to grow out of the car sick thing?
  2. Thanks folks. I feel much better now!!! rbm, please explain loose eyed and borderline sticky.
  3. I would like him to work stock. It probably wouldn't be a full time job or anything like that. Although, if it was something he would be great at, I'd have to rethink that.
  4. Julie, Thanks so much for your words of wisdom. I realize all of this, but it's great to hear it from someone else. The whole doubting one's self thing. Should I have already introduced him to livestock?
  5. whew. That's what I thought, it's just nice to have the verification!
  6. Well, I guess I think I'm doing something wrong becuase he's not displaying the eye, etc. Plus, I'm not able to stay at home with him to put in lots of quality time with him. He is really sharp. So, I guess it would be ok if he's not a fetching machine or a herding dog. We'll just have to find something else. Thanks Julie!
  7. Hi, I have some questions about teen puppies. First, Jake is 7 months old. I'm kinda concerned that he's small for his age. I realize that it will probably be hard to judge his size, cause it's a picture and everyone grows at a different rate. Here's a link to a recent picture post about him: http://www.bordercollie.org/cgi-bin/ultima...c;f=14;t=002942 Second, he's not doing much border crouching/staring. Granted, he's not around livestock or ducks, but has cats. Generally he'll pounce on them, and I occassionally see the border stare (for a few seconds). He does try to herd me (working on stopping that!!), but he doesn't just nip at my heels, he grabs my leg with his paw to bring it to him. He's also not much into fetching. He'll do it, but isn't obsessive about it. Which will make my family happy!! LOL It's been 11 years since I've had a border puppy, so I've forgotten what it's like. He does sit, shake, get in the back (back seat of truck), get in the truck, come, down, enough (used when mauling the cats). Granted, he's not perfect at all of these commands, but we're working on them. What am I doing wrong?
  8. My little Jake isn't much of a cuddler. When he jumps on the bed, it's to attack mom!!! Sam (female) wouldn't cuddle, but she'd have to be near me.
  9. WOW!! Little Hats is wonderful!! Well, a trainer or auditing a clinic would be great, but, it doesn't seem like NM is a hotbed of herding competition. I know they have at least one at the State Fair. Soooo, I think I'm stuck with books and videos. I'll search the clinics and see if there is anything close to me that I could attend.
  10. Thanks everyone!!! Very good advice! This is the greatest board!! Another question then, any good suggestions on a beginner type herding book? Something I can get a jump start on? Jake won't be in training for actual competition, just to help out on the ranch. But, still, I want him to rock!! Well, that is if he's into it. If not, we'll just have to try something else!
  11. Hi, I have an 11 week old pup. I'm interested in maybe putting him on stock next spring/summer. Don't worry, won't do it on my own cause I've never trained a stock dog. So, my question is, besides manners and basic obedience, what other commands should be taught? Thanks!
  12. I've posted a few pictures of Jake (and Sam and Bacon) under the picture area.
  13. RaisingRiver, yes, Jake is a BC. My first tri colored. My Sam was very obsessive about fetching. If I told her enough, that was good. Her problem was other people that would just keep playing with her. If Jake does fetch, I'll have to make sure that 'enough' is enough, no matter who is playing with him.
