  1. Frito-feet here as well! And kisses are allowed, but both Mirabelle and Jake fake kiss, that is kiss in your general direction, rarely making contact. It works for us.
  2. I used to think that my Jake didn't like the car rides either. He just didn't act like the fool that Belle does when we go. She can't sit still, tries to jump from window to window, thankfully not trying to get to mine, but nothing but sheer anticipation on what great place we are going to stop at. I've called her spaz more than once, while in transit. Now Jake, I've realized is the perfect car-riding dog. He jumps in the driver's side door, immediately places himself in the back seat in the middle, and lies down. He will occasionally stand to see what Belle's fuss is all about, but really he is a perfect rider.
  3. oh goodness, nothing like a good cry after a hard week. I was rescued twice.
  4. Oh my, frightful! Glad Sport is doing okay. My, "I thought I would die" moment was with Ms. Mirabelle. Back in April, I had taken her out before turning in for the night and her collar was loose from the wrestling match that had occured (between her and Jake - not her and I) before we went out. Something caught her eye, she wriggled out of the collar and off she went. It was 10:30 pm, I went after her on foot, DF went in his truck. Whatever she was after held her attention, because she ignored me completely. I tracked her for 4 blocks and finally spotted her on the train tracks right as the crossing gates went down a block south of where she was standing. I gave her the "come" command and she walked the opposite way, but off the tracks. I heard the train, so I commanded, "stay", she bowed in the play position and jumped up. The train sped by as I screamed. No sign of her when the train was past. I laid down and just lost it. I was certain she had been hit. I was sick. I have no idea how much time passed, when DF pulled up in the truck trying to get me to tell him what "i thought" happened when Belle came running up like she was having a blast at this game we were playing. It still makes me sick to think about it.
  5. Very moving, thank you for sharing. Sweet.
  6. My DF just informed me, after seeing this thread, that I neglected to add the name that he refers to Belle with most often: wigglebutt. I actually think she answers to this more than any of the others. How silly of me to forget.
  7. Mirabelle : Belle, Belley, Bellerina, Belligirl, Ms. Thing, Queen, Pretty girl - We only use Mirabelle when she's in trouble, lol. Jake: Jaker, Jakey, Jakester, Jakey Boy, Cuteness, Buddy, Master Jake
  8. Well she is a beauty, but then I do have a thing for tris. Can't wait to see some pics as she settles in. Good luck with the little lady
  9. I ran across this video right after it came out. It is cute. I bought and watched it without even thinking I needed the excuse of youngins in the family. I did let my neice and nephew borrow it after I was done and they liked it too!
  10. I had posted a while ago about Jake and his apparent fear of frying bacon - meaning the sizzling of the bacon, not that he's scared to cook it. Anyway, bacon cooked on the stove in a pan is the only thing I've witnessed him being afraid of (it doesn't bother him if I cook it in the micro) in the 1.2 years that we've had him. I orginally thought it was the sound, but I've cooked other food on the stove that sizzle and pop and it does not seem to bother him. His reaction to the frying bacon is so sad, I refuse to cook it that way anymore. He tries every means to get as far away from the kitchen as possible. His first choice would be to escape out the front door, but he will just sit there and shake. It is so sad. Oh wait! He didn't like the surround sound when we first hooked the new one up at Christmas time. He runs from speaker to speaker and will leave the room if it's a particularly noisey movie, but for the most part I think he's just trying to figure out why all those sounds are suddenly in the livingroom. He just doesn't react like he does to the bacon. These animals can be so quirky. I gave up trying to figure out why and just try to do what I can to make him comfortable in his new home. In his case, we know little about his background but what we do know was not at all an acceptable way of living.
  11. ohhhhhhhhhh, "legal" there's the catch..... I already used up my 30 day trial. Guess I'm SOL.
  12. Are there free downloads of photoshop. That would be a dream come true.
  13. Belle gets bored when home alone. We tried a couple afternoons with her out of her kennel she did great. And then there was this...... it used to be a wicker trash can. We started having her spend her afternoons back in the kennel. A while later, we dog sat for my sister's little basset-mix for a week, he and Belle love to play and the two of them stayed out of the kennels the whole time he was with us. They were awesome, not one thing out of place and no accidents. Well when we got Jake, we thought that it was the key, two dogs....no boredom......house not destroyed. We fostered Jake for two weeks before adopting him. He and Belle had free roam of the house and no issues, it was great. And then.......the day I left work early to go sign the adoption papers and take Jake to visit. I find this.. This was not a one dog effort. That couch was pulled more than 5 feet from the wall. We have since replaced the couch and a recliner that was injured in the assault. And everything is well in our home. Naughty or not, I LOVE my dogs!!
  14. I had actually wondered if it would work having it on low and slowly turning it up. I am going to try that this evening. It's weird that it bothers Jake and not Belle. It's sad, I don't want him to be scared or uncomfortable, but I laugh a little when I picture his initial reaction - a lost look, gazing around the room like he was hearing ghosts or goblins and staring at the speaker he was sitting by when it came on. If that was all he did, I wouldn't worry so much, but it's the whole body shaking that makes me feel for him. You know, I've only had Jake since the end of June and the only two things that I've seen that frighten him are the sound of sizzling bacon and surround sound. Thanks for the responses.
  15. I finally hooked up the home theater system I got my man for Christmas. Jake is terrified of the sound. He shakes and runs from the room. He is not scared of thunderstroms or fireworks - he and Belle actually sit by the big glass door during storms, it's almost as if they enjoy the light show, lol. At first I thought it was the loud booming base on the movie, but I just hooked up my ipod and played regular music-without a lot of bass-and he did the same thing. Any ideas on helping him feel more comfortable and safe with the surround sound on?
