  1. Hello , I've had exactly the same situation happen to me last September , I broke my ankle and was in a cast for three months . Tamyr was a bit more than a year , and quite a handful , she still is . I did something you probably won't be able to do but I panicked at the idea of her being stuck with a cripple for so long with nobody much to help at home. I first went to a friend's place on a deserted beach (I know that was lucky) and stayed there for ten days , she was as happy as can be with the place to herself , but that couldn't last of course . So next I got back home and made friends drive us to places close by on their way to work . I admit to a huge amount of phone calls , they just had to drop us off somewhere safe on their way so it wasn't such a hassle (:-(( , but anyway they did it . I was lucky with the weather , so people just dropped us off at the park or a lake nearby , and we camped there for as long as we could , me with books and stuff (no water for me;-) , her with balls and frisbies ... Of course I'm not proposing you do just that , it can sound a bit much , but it made me feel better on the days when nothing happened and no one could drive us anywhere . I'm not suggesting I did great , but I was really worried and the situation got me very organised , I traded drives to anywhere against meals and such (I'm a good cook!) , I lent my car to a young carless friend and she took us places etc . What I mean is you can feel very frustrated and bad , you can feel the dog is better off with others and so on but in the end I was ok with how I dealed with everything and it's all so tiny now . I kept finding opportunities to take her out , people couldn't tell me they were doing something without thinking "oh she'll ask me to go somewhere" ...but I don't think it was so dramatic to help out if possible . The worse was a wet dog in a friend's new car :-( Things will get better , this is not a forever situation , and the dog will get over it too . Just don't doubt that you're doing your best , think of positive things you can do (don't know about your conditions or the weather and such) and just let it be , it's certainly not your fault , just have to keep your spirits up as best you can because that makes the dog feel better too .
  2. Hello , I read some , not all because mostly I agree with all that is said by members here , but as regards your own postion , which will eventually affect the dog's , I think you should also consider that your situation is transitory , a young single student living with roommates etc , so things are bound to change and go in very different directions anytime soon ... For the dog's sake , I would of course privilege the rescue route , and maybe an older dog suited to your needs , the rescue people will understand what you are after ... None of my business but a dog lasts a long time , especially if you want to start with a pup , and all the decisions you'll have to make ( courses , time schedules , jobs , girl friends , other hobbies ... you name it) will affect the dog . It could be now you have a lot of time , energy , nice roommates , leisure time , a good house with a garden , and then in a couple of years you're married to a girl allergic to dogs , you have a very demanding job and live in a tiny appartment in the middle of a huge city ... That's me at my most cheerful I certainly don't want to burst your bubble but it does seem you're not settled in any one style of life ...a bc can be very unhappy very fast .
  3. Hello , I'm wondering what this license is about ..because here in Belgium no one needs to do anything , at least unless they get into trouble probably , as always in this country ! My dog has a European passport with description and shots , because I travel in other EU countries , but nothing compulsory . Of course she has a chip and a collar and all , but it seems to be up to the owner here , lots of people in rural areas never bother to do anything about their dogs , I mean officially , even if they do get the shots done . Bexie I don't know about Denmark and Germany , but I go from here to France or Lux or Netherlands , with no trouble . By car , so I wouldn't know about planes and real regulations as the road borders have disappeared everywhere . I was told by my vet that if arrested in France I'd need her passport though , so I take it . Of course the UK is still very difficult (not impossible but expensive and troublsome) . I'm wondering if I could travel to Denmark or Norway with the dog and her normal passport or do I need some more stuff ?
  4. Hello , I had a similar experience with Tamyr yesterday , as she suddenly started being sick in the morning , then spitting some blood , I was frantic and rushed her to the vet , then after checking her mouth for injuries and all (improbable as she had thrown up) , and reliving whatever she did during the last 48 hours , I remembered she had indeed munched something weird in the woods the day before , and not eaten well at night , looked like cat poop but could have been a small dead animal or whatever ...anyway the symptoms were appalling , she got an injection , and then all sorts of stuff to help her stomach recover , I checked that there wasn't any blood in her pee , then she got better ... Still my point is when a vet (one you're not questioning for other reasons) says take this medicine , I'd just do it . I went back in the evening , all was fine , but she still said stay on a diet (cooked chicken or turkey and that's it ) and keep giving the pills and some sort of white paste that helps the stomach recover . If you're doing a treatment , do it till the end , it's never productive to interrupt before time ...just an opinion ;-)
  5. Hi , for grabbing a treat (and your fingers unwillingly) I make Tamyr sit , think for a couple of seconds and settle , then I present her with the treat really hidden in my fist , so she has to open my hand gently with her nose and of course she does it carefully , as her idea never really was to bite my fingers off in the first place ...she's just greedy ! She still has a little difficulty when the cats are around waiting for their share , but now she knows she'll have to be gentle if she wants to find the hidden bit of cheese . Of course if someone shows up with food in their hand thinking she'll take it like a lady , well ... I just give them a big warning .
  6. Well as I understand better now , I'd say the dog deserves another chance , and you are probably the one who will give it to him !!
  7. Hello , I was thinking reading this thread that you haven't really communicated with the owner ...maybe a helpful road would be to talk to him directly , like people should do more , share your concerns before you do anything rash behind his back , leaving him no chance to react appropriately ? He might just not be aware of things , or it's his first dog , whatever ...people are often weird but still a little communication could help , and it's not as if you couldn't find him ...he might just be an ignorant decent sort ??? Not my real pessimistic self here , but maybe something in the air makes me think positive for once
  8. Hello all . I wasn't going to comment in case I hurt someone's feelings , we don't always have the same sensitivity on this side of the pond , but seen as other posters expressed their doubts , here's my humble opinion ... Obviously the lady has a thing in her hand that the dog really wants , which is fine with me but it's still there as a powerful incentive , the show is a bit boring , like when Tamyr wants to play ball and nags me forever even after we've been at it for an hour , it actually does look as if the dog is nagging the lady and walking all over her legs which would get ME face in the mud in no time , they don't do anything much in fact ...I'm not saying I could ever do something like that (not that I feel the urge to) , but Tamyr can be "hanging on my lips" so to speak when I hold a stick or a ball , and she can pester me forever , it looks more like a trick to me than a sheperd's dog normal attitude and anyway the music is just too AWFUL for me to ever contemplate joining in such a carnival with my dog but that's another topic ;-)) And ...forgive my incompetence but my idea of a heel let's say "a la francaise" ;-), is the dog with her nose on my heel watching out for my every move and following me like a stalker , not bouncing on the side because she is distracted and "wants" something ...
  9. I don't know what to say , this is just too awful for words . I don't know if I'd have the energy to sue the guy in these circumstances , but I'd certainly advise you (or your Dad ) to report this . I feel so very sorry for you this is heartbreaking...
  10. Hello Eileen , thanks for answering , and yes I have checked the remember me box each time , always on the same computer , but to no avail ...
  11. I'd be very careful with shampoos , I had a terrible experience with a good organic expensive puppy product recommended by the best (...)and Tamyr got this tragic rash on her spine like boils ...took weeks to mend . Most of the time water is enough , unless they've rolled in dead stuff of course :-(
  12. Hello , I have a question regarding the password ; will I have to type it all each time I log in ? I used to type my name and the 'remember me' thing was on so that was it , now it doesn't seem to want to remember me though I asked ... I'm just so sure I'll lose the password at some point !
  13. Great! It reminds me of an Irish singer , very famous ballads but can't remember her name now ... senility kicking in The pictures are lovely too
  14. Tamyr has a hairy collar like the spanish grandees , or a small lion , the rest is usually sort of long and flat with rebel hair sticking out at odd places , but we're just back from work in wet snow and now she's enormous , all puffed up like we had a special hairdo !!! http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d14/tamyr/?start=all
