  3. HAving been on Vacation with family and dogs the last few days I am suprised on how my question got so many replies. I do lots of dog sports, Agility, flyball, obedience and some herding. to me a well bred Border collie will do any of these things. as far as BAER testing it only takes a few minutes and costs less than any other test. it is not easy to find places that do testing, we had to drive 2 hours. it isnot nesasary to sedate the dogs unless they become difficult to deal with, which we were told at tufts is very rare. owners are alowed in the room to hold and comfort their dogs. we did 2 dogs in 15 miinutes. It can be done at any age over 5 weeks. a breeder would not know if they had a unilateral deaf dog unless they tested. after my visit to Tuft university, we learned that Both Parents must be carriers of the gene to produce a unilateral deaf dog, it is possible even if both Parents can hear out of both ears. my friend researched some working BC's, asked the breeder aboout BAER testing, the breeder said she never had a problem so why test. 3 weeks later the same breeder contacted my friend that she had a Bilateral deaf puppy, (deaf in both ears) this means that Both parents are carriers!. Unfortunatly there is no test YET to see if a dog is a carrier. it is being worked on and should be available in the next few years. AS far as what I want in a BC, I look for working lines, structure and temperment. if I find some I like, the breeder with more health clearences will get my buisness. 4. It is bigger than people think, if you had a dog that is unilateral, (deaf in one ear) you would not know it unless you test. dogs can be carriers and not be deaf at all. a friend and I were at Tufts university in Mass haveing our dogs tested and learned ALOT about how it is carried. the test is easy, and quick. puppies at 5 weeks can be tested. Unfortunatly there is no test yet to see what dogs are carriers. nor is there a data base for it. (like OFA) Judy
  5. I am wondering how many breeders test their dogs for hearing? and test the litters before they go off to the new homes?? I am seeing more and more Unilateral deaf BC's and even more people who don't test for it. Judy
  6. Thanks. He has seemed to let off and is back to ignoring her. Although I am still checking her. Yes I do wish to breed her, AFTER she is 2 and passes a LONG list of health clearences to my satisfaction. My Male is going on April 2nd to be collected and frozen for future use. he may do one more breeding this spring naturally and then is going to be neutered. The other thing that i thought of was this weekend an 11 month olddog also tried to mount her would my male smell this and try to be territorial? I am not ruling out UTI either Thanks Judy and the crew
  7. HI, I was hoping someone could help me out, I have a almost 7 month old BC bitch. She is still intact. I also have a almost 10 year old intact male. Friday they were fine together, I was away until this afternoon. When i came home My Male dog showed much interest in her, he normally doesn't give her the time of day he even tried to mount her twice. She isn't swollen and she is very young. I know she can come into heat any time after 6 months. But I also thought males weren't interested in females until they were ready for breeding. I am definatly going to keep an eye on her, to see if she swells. anyone have any experience with this?? My male has been breed before. Thanks Judy and the crew Tia (GSD) the Queen Brodie (BC) the Man Bandit (BC) the real Man Sony (BC) the baby
  8. These are some great suggestions. The wonderful thing about BC's is their ability to learn. I am not sure how old you pup is but like the others said be patient. My BC had to learn how to learn. One thing that helped was giving him a command that meant he was right. Try and give her a comand like "yes" for when she is right. And ignore her when she was wrong. When she is right give her a the comand then a reward like food or a toy. Once she "learns how to learn" you will be able to teach her anything. Good luck and keep us posted. Judy and the crew
  9. Hi, I am new to this board. I love to do Agility with my BC. I can relate to your concerns about a big BC. I have a very big BC who was growing like a weed. He started Agility training very early, about 12 weeks old. We did very little and very low and easy. Low Aframe and Just wooden planks on cement blocks for a dog walk. Tunnels were his favorite, Still is. As far as jumps he never really jumped untill he was about a year. very low about 8 inches. I was still concerned about his growing. He did however learn to go over a rail on the ground and between 2 standards. Brodie went to his first show 1 week before he turned 18 months. He must jump the 24inch height at shows. He started jumping 24 inches 2 weeks before his first show. I have seen no problems with him and he does great has a few titles and can't wait to show again this year.
