  1. Does anyone have any experience or feelings on this vaccine? Our vet says it has about a 60 percent effectivness. They are leaving the decision up to us. The one thing that has me leaning towards doing it is with the SAR training he is spending time in the woods and we are in an area with lots of deer. My thoughts against are that he is such a young pup and has already had so many vaccines that I do not want to overload his system. He did have the lethargy and huge lump after the rabies which according to our vet only happens in about 5 percent of all dogs. I am not sure if this is an indicator that his system is sensative or if it is just one of those things. Any input is appreciated. Liz
  2. I would think it would not be hard to find a cookie or something with ginger in it in Japan. My bet is you could use fresh ginger as well but no idea how much to use. When I say we gave two cookies before we left it was about 30 mins before as we were rushing around like crazy to get out of here. We used a locally made Moravian spice cookie only because I had it on hand. (He is very lucky I love him so much as these are my favorite special cookie that I do not even share with my kids.) Liz
  3. Thank you Thank you The ginger snaps seem to be working. We have taken several trips since this suggestion and so far so good. He has not gotten sick. He did not even get sick when we had to go get the kids from the afterschool activiites. I gave him two before getting in the car and then my son gave him two more on the way there. This is such a releif. LIz
  4. We have decided to go ahead and have Bonfire Penn Hip tested. We just want to rule out any potential problems. Now the questions. Where should we have it done. Our Vet has a specialist in the office and we can have it done there when he is nuetered. Is that keeping him under anestesia too long? Should we do it at another time? Should we go to U of Penn directly? We are not planning on doing this for another two months at the earliest. For anyone who has had their pups tested were their any ill affects afterward. Anything we should prepare for? Thanks. Liz
  5. The original poster did not mention how old his kids were. That can play a huge factor in what kind of dog you get. My pup is wonderful with kids of all ages but he is best with little ones (under 3) and slightly older ones (10 and above). The 6 to 8 year olds are too unpredictable and for some reason he wants to herd them the most. It has been more work for me with that age group. Not with the dog as much as with the kids. If you know you can spend the time and energy go for it. I would also lend my voice to rescue. BEing in Frederick you have a wide variety of areas that you could do face to face with the dogs fairly easily. You can look in Md, Va, C, West VA, Pa and even Del is not too far for a family trip. Liz
  6. Is there any connection between hic cups in dogs and reflux? There is a strong conection between babies and hic cups and reflux. PS Thank you for asking this I was just wondering about this myself this morning. Liz
  7. My almost 15 week old pup gets car sick. Violently car sick. We have tried having him in his seat belt in th ebak seat with all windows and the moon roof open. We have put him in his crate. We have covered the crate uncovered the crate. We have tried feeding him just prior to the trip, not feeding him before the trip, feedign him several hours before the trip, feeding him tummy soothing foods just before the trip, hours before the trip etc. Nothing seems to help. The vet had two suggestions. Just have lots of towels handy in the crate or seat and wait until he grows out of it or she could give us a perscription for something like dramamine. I would consider the dramamine for a long trip but I do not like the idea of using it for a trip to SAR training or even the pet store. Anyone have any ideas? Anything that helped their pup? Any ideas are welcome. Liz
  8. One of these babies was to be ours. We are a long way away but how do we help IronHorse help all of these dogs. At this point getting our baby is secondary to any support we might give to him and these poor animals.
