  1. I have a friend that lives up in the Pacific NW that's looking to get a puppy soon. Since I'm in Texas, I don't know anything about any breeders up in that area. I also don't want to start a bashing thread on any breeder so please reply privately. They are looking at Abingdon in Oregon. I checked out their website and I didn't see anything majorly pop up as a red flag. But there's not a whole lot either on their website. They appear to do mostly ASCA trials. If anyone has anything positive or negative to say, please PM me. I am still hoping to convince my friend to rescue but do at least want to steer them to a reputable breeder if they do decide definitely to make that choice. Thanks!
  2. Here's my red dog.... I was not a fan of the reds for a very long time but Apache's sorta grown on me
  3. You probably contacted OK PAWS but I'd try again. http://www.okpaws.com/ There's several links to email different people. I'd try everyone. They're an active group and have an UKC trial coming up in February. I think I have a personal contact for someone in their club if you'd like it. You might even try the OKC OTC http://www.ocotc.org/index.htm I don't think they offer agility but could point you in the right direction. Good luck!
  4. I like Weave-a-matics personally. It really helps your dog learn the foot work. I also love Susan Garrett's 2x2 method and it's really helped my guys get the idea of entries and work their drive. What I'd do with Grady being so young is what Lindsey recommended-- work on his drive to a target. I wouldn't do a lot of true 'weaving' as he's so young but you can use your homemade weaves and place them in the ground where they are wide enough apart and just let him run thru them to the target. Just keep it short and fun!
  5. I've gotten a few emails stating that Lis' passed away last night surrounded by her family, her friends and her dogs. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who knew her. Katrena
  6. We've seen several "mini" border collies pulled out of shelters here in Texas. I, in fact, have a foster failure that's only 17lbs and 15" tall and is about 1 1/2-2 yrs old. Everything about her is miniaturized except for her personality. I haven't had a chance to put her on sheep yet but plan to in the next few weeks. She's extremely herdy with the other dogs so it should be interesting to see what she may or might not do.
  7. Welcome and I just PMed you with some suggestions on positive clicker and agility training not too far from you. Good luck and many happy years with Oreo.
  8. Hope this is okay to post here... I don't know anything else just passing it along. Bob Vest's truck and dogs stolen in MO Bob Vest's truck and his three Aussies were stolen this morning; here's a news link and a posting that's going around. Please crosspost. It's already up on K9AmberAlert. Rev Oakes There is an email contact below, however, if this truck is spotted, I would also suggest contacting the Jackson, MO Police (573) 243-3151 or the local sheriff/police (911) for the area you see the vehicle. 9. First dog as a child: Up until age 9, I had Buster the border collie who was a great partner while I was growing up. After he passed on, my family found ACDs and then I had Amanda, one of the world's best Cattle Dogs ever who lived to be 19. First dog as an adult: Amanda was mine until my 20s and by then I'd also moved out and adopted my first border collie, Jezzi, who came from a local shelter. Why a BC? I had always loved the breed. My grandfather always had them and I idolized him and his dogs. Did you do research? Nope First BC: Jezzi was my first BC as an adult. Buster was the family dog but he was "mine" in the fact that he let me latch onto him and toddle all around. What made you want to get another? I began fostering and have a couple foster failures because just like potato chips, you can't have just one! What have you done with your dogs? obedience, some minimal herding tho I'd love to do that more, agility, and the most rewarding- therapy work. As a counselor, I typically have a dog at work w/ me. How many BC's? I've had quite a number through my house with fostering over the years. How many do you have now? Right now, I have : Sierra- a 9 yr old blue merle and Apache- 2 yr old red/white and Jaz a 2 yr old 17lb foster girl undergoing heartworm treatment. What "quirks" have you noticed with all your dogs? too many to list. Apache's latest is that he doesn't like to drink out of the easy pour water bottle for whatever reason. City dog or country dog? Country dogs tho I'm house shopping and will probably move into town. Would you ever get another breed? Of course! I"ll always have a Cattle dog or two. I have one at the moment as well as I have a Cardigan Welsh Corgi and a Boston terrorist mix...I love my Cardi and will probably have another one of those in the future too. I've always liked Aussies and English Setters and you never know what dog may come along that will just fit into our home.
  10. I've been using for almost a year now and have really liked it. My Cardigan had a luxating patella so I started him on it first. He had surgery to repair his knee a couple months ago and his recovery has gone extremely well. He was putting full weight on his leg the first day. We're back to agility and his first post surgery trial in a couple of weeks. That's the only supplement besides Fish Oil and Vit E that he gets. I have several friends who use it on their dogs and report good things.
  11. Hi Kat, We're in the same agility class... I missed this week due to being out of town for work. In that class, I have the littlest Corgi boy-Festus. Kess and you are doing a great job and she's so very well trained! We'll see you in class next week. Katrena
  12. I fostered a wonderful border collie "Happy" that we had to amputate the back leg. He was pulled from the shelter with his foot missing. Happy truly never missed a step and you'd never know that he was missing a leg. He was faster and more agile than some of the other dogs. He now lives in California and does some obedience and agility. In fact, he and his mom competed on their club's behalf in the Top Dog competion the CA clubs have each year. He is an awesome dog and I miss him!
  13. I had a border collie that would have random nose bleeds and we never discovered the cause. He was always negative for any TBDs though we did go ahead and treat w/ Doxy several times in case he was low positive that wasn't showing up on any tests. My vet then thought he may have a polyp in his nasal cavity and we explored that issue. We went to a specialist, did scopes, Xrays....Could never find a reason to explain the bleeding. It got less and less frequent as he matured and in his last year, he only had a nose bleed twice. His also were unclotting so it was always a big worry if he began to bleed and I wasn't home. I learned all the pressure point tricks to stop the bleeding and quit having to make middle of the night vet visits Jake was also a rescue and a product of a puppymill. I got him at 6 mos and was his 6th home. At first, his nose bleeds were about every 2 weeks and then after the first couple of years, they became once a month or so and then gradually more time between them. I lost him when he was almost 11. We spent many bloody evenings together.... Hopefully, your dog will continue to do well.
  14. That's not too far south of Dallas.....I think I know someone not too far who has a training facility... Katrena
