I have a BC that's almost 14 weeks old and she seems more excited to see my wife and son than me. That said, she spends a lot more time with me so it's to be expected. I think you will see more of a bond as your dog passes through puppyhood, but then again sometimes you end up with a dog that prefers a bit more space. My Aussie would go crazy when I came home, but then she would go lay down somewhere away from me, but always keep me in her sight.

8 weeks - 8lbs 10 weeks - 11 lbs 12 weeks - 13 lbs 13 weeks - 15 lbs Her Mom is pretty small. I imagine she will end up in the 35 lb range.

Thanks everyone! She just hit 13 weeks Friday and weighs about 15 lbs. So glad the nipping is starting to calm down and hopefully in a few weeks she will be able to sleep through the night without a potty break.

I owned two Border Collies in my 30s and when they passed I decided to get an Australian Shepherd. She passed back in October just short of her 9th birthday due to cancer. I decided it was time for another Border Collie, so now we have Blue who is 11 weeks old today. Looking forward to a long journey and hope she lives a long and healthy life. Now if I can just keep her from eating all the deer poop in our yard.

Wow, your dog was adorable! I totally understand...I just lost my Aussie about 6 weeks ago and it's tough when her pics show up in my Facebook feed.

I always heard male/female, but if you have them nuetered it's less of an issue. I had two boys from the same litter and once they figured out the dominant thing they were fine. That only took a week or so.

Have you tried hanging a bell from the door she leaves to go outside? My Aussie picked up ringing the bell to go outside pretty quickly.

I had two Border Collies about 25 years ago. They were amazing dogs, but they did require a lot of time but I never regretted owning them. After the 2nd one passed I decided to purchase an Australian Shepherd. She was a great dog also and was pretty mellow, but quite a bit more reserved around strangers. I had to put her down a couple weeks ago and now I'm trying to decide on what to get next between the two breeds. I work from home quite a bit as does my wife. We also have a 14 year old son and 3 cats and live on a 4 acre lot. Border Collie More snuggly than my Aussie Better with strangers Some have no off switch My Borders never ran off, but I also never left them outside unsupervised. Aussie Less work day to day Mine never bit anyone, but she did jump at a couple people in a somewhat aggressive manner when they went to pet her LOVED going to doggie daycare a couple days a week My Aussie was affectionate when I came home, but then she would not snuggle up afterwards. Would chase deer constantly. Has anybody had luck with finding a somewhat mellow Border Collie? Mine were actually pretty good, but I've read some are on 24/7. I'd do some Agility/flyball, but more as a hobby. I wonder if a Border Collie pup would drive the cats crazy. Has anyone else here owned both breeds? Anyone here take their Border Collie to doggie daycare? Thanks

Max 7/94 to 12/07 Breaking the rules a bit since it was 12.17.07, but I doubt anyone here will mind. Max rode home with me as a pup a bit on the dirty side. I remember giving him a bath and thinking how cute my fluffy little furball was. I spent that first night sleeping on the floor wth him because he missed his mommy. I picked his brother up a week later and they we best pals til the end. Max and Tosh were sooo different....Max loved everyone, Tosh was dads boy. Max was a little rough around the edges, Tosh always seemed so graceful. Max always had a kiss ready for anyone willing to get close enough, and even for those who we not quite ready. He loved to be outside and just soak up the smells and sounds around him. One weekend he could barely make it around the yard before he would lay down. I took him to the vet and they diagnosed him with cancer...they said a few weeks to a couple days were all I could expect. He went downhill so fast and was put down three days later. I had the vet come to the house to put him down since he hated being anywhere near the vets office. He lifted his head just before the passed as if to thank me for making the pain go away. I couldn;t say his name for weeks without crying. As you can see he adopted my son as if he were his own. He followed him everywhere he went and kissed him every chance he had. His brother Tosh is still with me, but was diagnosed with CRF about a year ago. I'm thankful for every day I have with him since they were both such a HUGE part of my life. We will miss you forever Max.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I had to put down his brother Max just over a year ago and I'm so thankful for every moment I have with Tosh. They are truly the most incredible dogs...so full of personality and devotion.

I have a 14 year old Border Collie who sometimes has trouble getting up from a lying position. It seems his rear legs are the main problem, but he also has radial nerve damage which causes his front paw to slide out from under him (once he is up he gets along pretty well). He still wants to be active and still picks up a ball wherever we are outside. Is he at an age where just taking him for walks would be better....he just seems happier playing. Also, he has renal failure, so I wonder if there is anything I can give him that may help without taxing his kidneys. Any suggestions?

I've been using Royal Canine MP (Medium Protein). They also carry a LP (Low Protein) for the later stages of Renal Failure. My Border has done pretty well over the past year with his diet and also receives fluids.
