  1. Liz.... that sound like it may very well have been the cause. In that case, they missed it when she was ill last year. But, wouldn't she have had a fever?
  2. I had to have one of my Border Collies put down Sat night. She had been getting quite the belly on her for the past month. We just assumed that I missed a heat cycle and she was bred as I have a male as well. I had an app. to get them both fixed in April as I am out of breeding. Def didn't want pups, but ok all well.I have been for a few years now. This particular female had never been bred. It started with that. Then, Fri am I woke up and saw she had an accident on the floor. Not like her, but I figured ok, she REALLY had to go. Sat am I also woke up to an accident on the floor. She was acting strange. Wandering aimlessly around the kitchen like she was drunk with her head cocked. She also had a slight twitch to her head when she laid down. I had to go out to the barn for an hr or two. Brought the thermometer with me. Got home. She had thrown up some blood. Not good. Called the vet. Vet. She mentioned a few things that it could be. She thought maybe al uncerated stomach. Had me give her amoxi tabs and pepto bismol. Told me to watch her. They wanted $300 just to look at her since it was a sat. Couldn't do it. Decided to keep an eye on her and if she was doing decent, take her in monday. By sat night she was having seizures every 5 min. Made the call to put her down. There was no way she got into anything as far as poisions go. I also don't think she was bred. She was a thin dog. Never had much of an appetite (unless it was people food) & never gained weight. She was sick last year. Blood in stool, anemic, lethargic. Vets said she had whip worm which was odd as I deworm with safe guard. Prescribed panacure and amoxi tabs. She seemed to be fone after that. She was always a happy dog with lots of energy. Then, this. We are thinking it was some kind of cancer or tumor in the stomach. She also had the worst breath of any dog I've ever had for as long as I can remeber. She was also on interceptor for the past year. It was rough =(
  3. I know you guys arent big on kibble, but I have always kept my dogs on Pedigree. Last time she was at the vets office she thought she was under weight. The vet thinks she should weigh more like 35 lbs and she was only 25. I'm not sure what she weighs now as I dont have a scale, but I know she has gained some weight since then. I had to put her on Interceptor b/c she kept getting reinfested with parasites easily and she gets quite sick quite quickly. I was bleaching and everything so I'm not sure how she kept picking them up. That was last spring when she was in a kennel outside. She is now in the house. One thing I didnt mention is that she always has had bad breath. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. If everything checks out, I wonder if getting her spayed would help? Anything I could supplement to help gain weight other than oils? I don't want to give her diarrhea.
  4. Her diet hasn't changed. She's always been a thinner dog, but not this thin. She doesn't seem to be loosing weight, she just isn't gaining and I feel for as much as she has been eating she should be gaining. Since I moved, she's not getting near the exercise she used to on the farm. She's great in the house and she still gets some exercise, but I would have thought that she'd have gained since moving here and she hasn't. She hasn't been tested for thyroid or organs or anything like that. Her stool is normal. Her energy is the same as always... nonstop fetch lol. She is parasite free. She was just wormed with panacure from the vet and she is also on interceptor.
  5. Is there a mineral or chemical imbalance that can cause a BC to not gain weight properly? I know we have discussed how BC's can be a thinner breed, but my 4yo female eats like a pig and just doesnt gain ANY weight. When you run your hand down her back you can fell her back bone, ribs and hips. I think she's too thin. She has been to the vet for general check ups and is on Interceptor.... she seems to be healthy. How pink should the gums be? Her's almost seem a little light to me, but maybe I'm imagining things.
  6. My dogs are in separate kennels (outside), so I know exactly how much they eat. The pup is in the house right now. I like to keep them inside untill about 6-8 months so I can spens a lot of timje with them. Then they get a kennel outside. I feed at night (5pm) when I feed horses and they have all night to eat. I fill her bowl b/c she doesn't eat well. I only fill my males halfway b/c he's a hog LOL!!!! I guess I don't see much reason in feeding her twice a day b/c it takes her 2 days just to eat her bowl full. I will try feeding 2x per day and see what happens. I can't hardly believe she'll eat more though! Thanks for the thoughts and ideas
  7. I feed once a day. I fill her dish completely up. (My bowls are large) After looking at all those photos.....I don't think she's as thin as I suspect. She just doesn't have much hair (she's semi-smooth coated) so she looks even thinner. I'll post some photos tomorrow after work and you guys can tell me what you think.
  8. She eats.....not as much as I would like, but she eats. She'll ABSOLUTELY FULL of energy and is doing something nonstop! She isn't dropping weight, just not gaining.
  9. Flye will be 2yrs old on December 15th. She is so thin! She's not "going to die" skinny, but she's much too thin. I have wormed her (for everything under the sun) using Safe-Guard and I started to mix some canned dog food in with her dry so it was more appealing to her. She doesn't seem to eat her kibble well. It takes her 2-3 days to eat a full bowl. I also have been putting Cocosaya oil on her kibble. She was eating better with the canned in it, but I havn't seen any weight gain at all. She is a very active dog. I have also tried a different kind of kibble, with the same results. She just doesn't eat much. Do you think she's just maturing late (like most BC's) and she'll fill out down the line? My male really didn't start filling out till he was 3yrs old, but he was never quite that thin. She is a petite dog, but she's built like a whippett!!! I'm going to call and make her a vets appointment, but do you guys have any ideas?
  10. I agree with that as well. She already had a vet appoint. scheduled for them, so she isn't making any $$ off them at all. I went and looked at them and I was really impressed with the parents! Really, all my dogs are are pets as well. Yes, they work, but only for my pleasure and their own. They don't get to work as often as they'd (or I'd) like. Here is a photo of the little guy. I named him Zip.
  11. This is a response I got from another forum. It makes sense to me..... "Inbreeding is when the same individuals are within the first two generations. After that, we're looking at linebreeding. Rick is correct, inbreeding is how we get a "type" &, consequently, develop "breeds". Typically, after the breed is developed, linebreeding & out-crossing is utilized. In school, they taught us that one of the first things to go in an intensive inbreeding program is height. [Hmmm... Three of my four grandparents are from western Ireland. I wonder if that's why I'm vertically challenged...??? ] The operative word here, though, is "intensive". Is the bitch inbred to begin with? If not, we're not looking at "intensive". Remember that genetics is NOT like mixing paint. It's a game of "dominant" & "recessive". Good traits [good conformation, athletic ability, etc.] are usually dominant because they contribute towards species survival. Now, for each trait, an offspring will get one gene copy from each parent. Because of this, with inbreeding, we intensify whatever traits we're dealing with. If they're dominant, we get a concentration of that. If we're dealing with recessive traits, again, we get a concentration of those. IMO, look at the parents. You know what a good BC looks & acts like. If you see things you don't like, take a pass. If they're nice individuals, though, it might be a good opportunity. Got pics? Good luck!"
