Hiya Angie,
I am absolutely kicking myself because I had in article in a dog magazine about corophagia and I have searched my entire house, and it is the only issue I can't find!!
It discussed using fresh pineapple which contain enzymes that help your dog digest food more readily, but I'm afraid I can't recall how much is required.
The article explained that in some (but not all) instances it is the poor digestion of food that causes the dog to 're-eat' its poo...there is something digestible still there to eat.
A lady at my training classes was having this problem with her year old golden retriever. She also had the litter brother who had no desire to eat poo at all. After delving further she said the poo eating dog had a tendency to gulp down his dry food at an incredible rate of knots, and then spent the rest of the evening passing wind. He ate only his own poo, not his brother's.
The 'good' dog neither raced his food, nor did he pass any wind.
I advised that pineapple would be worth trying, and also switching foods ( pedigree complete), and either using a buster ball at mealtimes or soaking and raising the food bowl onto a footstool/food stand to aid easier digestion.
She has reported no further problems with her poo eating goldie
My own pup has tended to try and 'inhale' her meals before now, and her wind was getting to be quite a problem. Now she has every meal in a buster ball and no wind whatsoever ( finally I can let visitors into my house!). She has also gained a little more weight too which has helped as now I don't get the 'do you ever feed your dog?' comments!
I am afraid that I don't know much about storing pineapple...hope someone can help you there.
If you do get Dogs Today Magazine I am sure the article must be in the August edition ( well its the only one I can't find anyway)
Love Lisa
