  1. I bought my dog one of these: http://www.flippyflopper.com/ They are only $5.49 on the website (I think I paid around $8 or $9 at the local pet store I support). They fly pretty good in my opinion, but I have a small backyard and well, I'm not the world's best frisbee thrower either! I really like that they are soft so it easier on their mouths when they catch it. Hopefully one of these would work for you!
  2. Thanks for the mention Deb! Hope, I did send you a PM as well about working with you and your dog. Definitely look for me if you are able to make it to the Iowa State Fair. I'd be more than happy to talk with you more about working with you and your dog and you would also have a chance to meet the individual that owns the farm & sheep where I work my dogs. She just started her young dog this year and can vouch for how much fun (and frustration! lol) it is to work dogs. The Iowa stockdog people are really a great group and are wonderful at welcoming new people into the fold! Look forward to meeting ya! Donna
  3. Is there a reason why they do not charge for spectating? Perhaps if they did charge like some other trials did, they wouldn't have to solicit for funding. Just a thought.
  4. My friends live in Hotchkiss, about 3 hours south of Meeker and are pretty close to the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park. Back when I lived in Minneapolis, twice a year I would travel out to western Colorado and spend two weeks with them in May and then again in December and we’d spend every day working our dogs out in the Adobes. When he started hosting a trial his son and I would travel out there to run the setout for him and back in 2007, I ran at Meeker. Hotchkiss is about 5350 for altitude, Meeker is around 6240. Minneapolis, 860. I never spent any time before the trips to acclimate myself or my dogs to the higher altitudes. I never noticed it having an effect on them but they were typically in pretty good shape at that time. Although they were still couch potatoes compared to dogs working on the ranches out there. I basically handled them like I would if we were setting sheep all day at a trial….make sure they have plenty of access to water and watch them for signs of stress or overheating. I would get a bit short of breath if I had to run a ways or climb a steep hill, but even so it wasn’t bad. I had more difficulty with falling in the irrigation trenches in the pastures and getting soaked! And you will definitely feel the rays of the sun more, so sunscreen is a must or you will fry. Love the no humidity out there too. So are you planning on going to Meeker this year, Debbie?? If so, how exciting! Donna
  5. I am relocating to the Des Moines area the end of March and I am hoping to find a work site or two that are within an hour or so radius of Des Moines (I am not looking for some place to get lessons, but rather a place where I can pay or exchange labor/farm sitting/etc for time on sheep). I am an experienced handler and I can provide references for my stockmanship and the working ability of my dogs. Currently I have one seasoned trial/setout dog and a 13 month old pup that I have just started on sheep in the area I am living at now. Really looking forward to the move back to the Midwest and working with old friends as well as making new ones! Thanks! Donna May
  6. The 9th Annual Upper Midwest Stockdog Challenge was held July 27-29 at Jordan, MN. Joni Swanke of North Dakota was the judge for all classes. The sheep were a blend of Columbia / Dorset and Columbia /Suffolk crosses with a few full blood suffolks owned by Kevin Bailey and were set in packets of two ewes and two lambs. Temperatures were much cooler than last year! Typically temperatures climb into the mid 90's with humidity levels equaling the temperature which provides quite a challenge to not only the setout crew, but handler and dog teams as well. Previously we have had two years (the first year the trial was held and last year) where we were forced to break mid-day due to extreme heat. So you can see why we were so thrilled to have temperatures in the mid to upper 80s this year! Many thanks to Kevin Bailey, trial host, for putting on this trial yet another year and the landowner, Burdette Stief for the use of his field for the trial! I also want to take this opportunity to thank the setout crew that worked with me - John Wentz, Stretch Fehihaber, Richard, Bailey, Pearse Ward, Laura Hicks, Sue Noll, Renee LaBree, and the individuals that helped out in the pens, Tom Bailey, Theresa Bailey, Dustin Hicks and anyone else I may have missed. Thanks for all the help! I couldn’t have asked for a better crew to work with and really appreciate the out of state help that pitched in to give me and my dogs a break! Thank you's also go to Claudia Mahon who helps manage the clerking for the judge and many other numerous administrative tasks and Pearse Ward for putting together the program for this year again. Also thanks to everyone who helped setup and tear down for the trial. I know Kevin really appreciates the help! I'm sure I'm missing someone, but trust that your help with the trial was greatly appreciated!! Now for the results: Novice I 1. Dustin Hicks/Non-compete / Kat - 36 2. Stretch Fehlhaber /Nell - 35 3. 8. The 4th Annual Hotchkiss SheepCamp Stock Dog Trial was held on May 11-13th in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Open and PN judge was Keith Fassbender of Durango, CO, Novice and Nursery judge was Kevin Bailey of Belle Plaine, MN and Nursery judge for Sunday was John Wentz of Portage WI. The sheep were yearling range ewes that had not been worked by dogs before. We couldn’t have asked for more gorgeous weather for the weekend or for better, more challenging sheep to test both dogs and handlers alike. Many thanks to Richard Bailey and the town of Hotchkiss for putting on this trial yet another year! 10. Thanks everyone for your input! I appreciate it. Odds are with this particular dog I won't have to worry about any of this (short story, previous owner was not too educated about Border Collies and used a shock collar on her when she started harassing his horses), but I have thought of this situation before and have always been curious how the USBCHA handles it. Diane and Bill's suggestion of a statement from the vet stating approximate age is a good one. I do need to take her in for shots anyhow, so will speak to the vet about this. She is about 10 months old now, so is only a one year Nursery dog. Bill's statements was pretty much my thinking, that you'd have to prove things to a greater extent if the dog was a 2 year Nursery dog versus a 1 year. Thanks everyone! Donna
  11. Ok, so what do you do if you buy (rescue) a non-papered Border Collie from John Q. Public who can't remember the name of the breeder or what town he got the dog from? The dog is 9 months old but you have no papers, no breeder name, nothing other than this individual telling you that the dog is nine months old? From what I understand from the USBCHA rules, the dog doesn't have to be registered, doesn't even have to be a Border Collie to run at the finals but how do you supply proof of date of birth to establish the dog is of qualified Nursery age? I could be totally wrong (and may have had too much egg nog) but from what I could tell from the USBCHA site, this seems to be the case. I like to think that all of us have integrity that we would not lie about the age of a non-registered dog whose age could not be verified, but am wondering how the National Finals' powers that be would handle something like this. Thanks, Donna
