A friend who's a veterinary technician certified in Fear Free techniques once told me about a way to help trim uncooperative dogs' nails, but I haven't tried it. It involves using a mesh screen with boxes large enough that the dog's nails fit through. The dog stands on the mesh and the person trims the nails from below. This avoids having to hold or restrain the paw which is often the thing the dog doesn't like, as mentioned above. I imagine a Dremel would work well with this if the dog will tolerate it, but regular clippers might work as well. My rescue border terrier X was initially very bitey about having his feet handled, but since he's only 18 pounds I used a soft muzzle and just dremeled him on my lap. He was perfectly quiet with the muzzle. I eventually stopped using it and he's still fine with nail care. OTOH, one of our Border Collies will not allow me to do her nails, but since she'd happily walk through fire for my husband, I just have him hold her leash and I quickly clip her nails without incident. Good luck with Katie! Amy

I've loved reading about your journey with Dan since the beginning, with Megan and Celt along the way. I'll never get over how extraordinary it is to work together with another couple of species to accomplish a very difficult task, and the bonds created from that are transcendentant. Thanks for sharing Dan's wonderful long life with us, and I know you will treasure your multitude of memories. Hugs! <3 Amy

Oh my goodness, the poor little guy. I hope Animal Rescue found him his way home <3

Thanks for this lovely tribute to Digger, D'Elle, and I'm sorry for your loss of an exceptional friend. I'm glad you shared with us, and I'm glad you are also at peace with his passing. Amy

Gorgeous Finn! Are you working him on sheep? Happy New Year, to all on the Boards! Amy

Katahdin x Dorper makes a nice dog training sheep. Good mothers, easy care, stay fresh if handled properly, shed their wool, and get fat eating air, basically. Tasty to eat as well. The higher percentage of Dorper, the heavier they will be, in general. Good luck in your search! Amy

Gibbs has gone to to a place with no pain and no confusion
amc replied to urge to herd's topic in In Memoriam
DH and I were the lucky ones who made contact with Ruth all those years ago to have her meet Gibbs to see if he might be a good fit into her home. Needless to say, it was a very good fit, and we have been so, so happy for all the years Ruth and Gibbs shared, and we're ever grateful for the loving home she gave him, as well as her willingness to share their adventures together. Making the difficult decision to let them go is never easy, but it's the kindest gift we can give to our beloved friends. Run free, Gibbs, and thank you, Ruth. Amy -

This is not my dog, but I know her and her owner. Here's a link to Riley's Petfinder listing: https://www.petfinder.com/dog/riley-58711073/ca/sacramento/heart-of-a-border-collie-rescue-mn432/ I really hope the right person(s) sees this - feel free to share widely. Amy

Good news for Raina! Thanks for keeping us updated. Amy

I knew you'd be observant for signs of UTI, Ruth :-) and glad to hear Gibbs isn't showing any. Good suggestion by gcv-border about the x-pen if you think that might work. Hugs to both! Amy

Oh dear, sorry, Ruth and Gibbs! I have no personal experience with leaky males, hopefully someone will jump in. Roy turns 13 on 11/8 but so far he's continent. It cheers me that his first morning pee takes about 45 seconds as I'm pretty sure he's really emptying his bladder. He's never been a real 'marker' like some, happily. Any chance Gibbs might have a UTI? Good luck, best wishes, and keep us posted! Amy

This thread reminded me of a study I read many years ago about breeding for tameness in silver foxes in Russia. A synopsis is here : https://evolution-outreach.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12052-018-0090-x As the foxes became tamer, their phenotypes changed to include melanin shifts as Eileen referenced, with "shepherd's lanterns" even appearing on tail tips.
