  1. I'm in 100% agreement....the Finals Program was wonderfully written. I believe both Heather Nadelman and Eileen Stein wrote articles. Well done! Sharon Nunan

  5. Eileen's right....Donald's article is a winner for "first timers." It's a must-read and most helpful. I've recommended that article to a few people new to trialing. When you know what to do and what is appropriate during your first few trials, you feel much better going on the field with a "plan" or some idea what to do if things go wrong.
  6. Since I did Rescue for close to 15 years, a number of my dogs are/were unwanted or Rescued Border Collies. My Jim, was part of an unwanted litter of pups that the backyard breeder/sheep farmer couldn't sell. I often wonder if that farmer would like to know that Jim turned out to be, not only my most trusted helper around my sheep field, but an Open trial winner and qualified for, and ran in the 2003 National Finals? Probably not. I've also purchased pups and a started dog or two.
  7. Christine, One of my old retired trial dogs had a MCT on her rear foot in between the two center toes. That was over two years ago and the surgery and healing went very well. As you mentioned, my vet was concerned about healing not going well because of where it was, but again, it healed up beautifully and no sign of it returning or any new ones.
  8. Muck Boots and I don't get along very well at all! Unfortunately, I'm highly allergic to them or whatever they're made out of. Even though their web site says "Hypoallergenic" I broke out almost from head to toe and when I stopped wearing them the breakouts ceased. I guess it's a Neoprene allergy. Other than that, I miss them terribly and thought they were the answer to keeping dry and warm in the field.
  9. Thanks Mark. I couldn't resist. Ron and I are doing very well -- Thank You. I'm heading out to my sheep field now to load up their hay feeders since we're in the path of 12 - 16" inches of snow. I think you're getting a bit less? I'm just hoping Edgeworth Winter SDT will still be on. Practicing in 16 inches of snow is one way to slow down a youngster! Say "Hey" to Renee for me! I love her new pup. I hope she's a super worker! It sounded like a nice breeding.
  10. Does anyone think a Running Order will be published before Friday? On Sheepdog-L for instance. Sharon Nunan
  11. DallasBCFan, I just checked www.petfinder.com and did a search for BC's in Texas. Up came over 300 Border Collies or Border Collie Mixes and looking briefly myself, some were predominantly White. If you haven't already checked with Petfinder, that could be a place for you to go. Good Luck...you'll eventually find just what you're looking for.
  12. Lydia, I had a similar experience with a set of twins and the ewe would only let one nurse and bash the other one away. I did a week or so of holding the ewe so the lamb could nurse and it got "old" plus the ewe got harder and harder to hold. I would supplement the lamb with a bottle and that gets old real quick too. I ended up hanging a small bucket of milk replacer w/nipples in the stall with the ewe and the sibling and the rejected lamb took very well to this set up and it saved me the headache of bottle feeding. You have to keep bucket clean of course and provide fresh replacer once or twice a day. I'm far from being an expert on this. Just sharing what has worked for me.
  13. What do you get when you mix 23 inches of snow, 30 sheep and new lambs coming each day, and 6 Black and White Sheepdogs staring at you wondering why your shepherd's whistle hasn't come off the hook in the kitchen for days and has a layer of dust on it? -- Bored-er Collies. I'm so sorry for this really bad joke, but cabin fever is hitting hard here in SE Pennsylvania! Not only the dogs but me too! Spring.....please hurry!
  14. Bill, Regarding Tip #6 --- Where and how would one "massage the Rumen"? Not sure exactly where on the sheep's stomach would you start this and how much pressure would you apply. I had an ewe with suspected grain overload last year and helped her through it with success, but didn't know about the "massage" part.
