  1. Forgive the blank picture. For the life of me I can't get it to change. Right now I have runners ducks and go elsewhere to herd white faced sheep. I woud like to find some dogged sheep to purchase and work my Border Collies on. One of my collies is young so would like to have him on dogged sheep more often.
  2. Thanks for the input. I will plan on just keeping it simple and start slow with one command at a time. I didn't know at first it I wanted a universal sound if I should happen to have two Border Collies sometime in the future.
  3. I have a herding whistle but wanted to know how all of you trained yourself. Would you recommend purchasing a CD with the herding whistle commands and mimic the sound? Thanks for any input.
  4. Thanks for the info! Too bad the clinic is full but I would great to audit. What is the best way to keep updated on the clinics in the area?
  5. I'm curious as how many herding trainers are in central Iowa. I only know of two. I have meet with James Bergert from Williams once. He seemed helpful and patient.. Thank you for your suggestions.
  6. Hello all, I did take my pup to a herding trainer. He (my dog) did very well and seemed to enjoy herding the well dog broke sheep. He would gather and bring them to the trainer or both of us. He eventually did decide he liked herding in one direction and also later on in the lesson decided just to play. He is young and I am fine with giving him a large break before trying again. It was a real joy to watch him work. I have not had him do any duck herding at this time. Hope
  7. Thanks for all the feedback. I understand the threshold and will work on moving away at home first with one bike and then go to a park and stay my distance and slowly work our way in. He just turned 7 months this week and he really seems like he is wanting to herd more objects. I do want him to herd but only the objects I ask him to.
  8. I would like some ideas on how to train my dog not to chase bicycles. I need to have him not go into over the top chase mode when we are at the park or even at home. Thanks
  9. Thanks for the reply. I would keep the sessions very short and enjoyable.
  10. This has been very helpful. I guess their is alot of great trainers in Canada and the U.S.
  11. Thanks for all the input. I do have the opportunity to puchase some year old runner ducks. I do have room for them at here at our home. My thoughts were to expose him to ducks and help burn some energy off. I was thinking maybe only doing this 10 minutes at a time. I am concerned that having them here my dog will want to always run out to where the ducks pen will be. Thanks for the input about not using commands. I am not experienced at this although I have done tons of reading and going to demos. I realize I will be learning at the same time as our dog. There is a trainer who lives an hour away from me but he has been too busy right now to schedule any training times with me. It looks like the trainer will be back into town in two weeks. Maybe I should be waiting and try him at 9 months. Always enjoy hearing your thoughts. Hope
  12. I actually got my pup from Canada. The breeder crossed over in Michigan by car. She had all the papers and said that was the fastest she ever crossed over the border. She usually crosses over into NY. I am thinking about sending our dog backover into Canada for a month of training. Never really thought about shipping the dog over. How stressful is that on the dog as I want this to be as stressless as possible so our dog can take in as much training as possible. I might check into flying him over. I have also had somethought about just doing training her also. Hope
  13. I have a 6 month old pup from an active working parent pedigree. I would like to start him on ducks as he seems to be very active (like most bc's). Is there any harm starting now instead of waiting. The closest herding trainer is 1 hour away from my home. He is willing to train us but I am not sure if he would do sheep or ducks. Thank you.
