I'm so sorry for your loss.

I got mine from the vet and then ordered them from amazon--however, I have also done, at the direction of my vet, the following--get powdered glucomsamine used for horses in a feed store--like Tractor supply. Sprinkle several tablespoons on top of their food and/or mix it in. I had my doubts, but my then-aging malamute responded beautifully within a few weeks. The change in his gait was visible, he was pretty pain free from his arthritis until he really was near the end. I have a 6 year old BC now and I am going to go try and hunt the powder down as I do not relish trying to get my little picky eater to down a pill.

I have used Rescue Remedy and DAP plug ins early on with our greyhound and they did seem to have a good effect. We coupled this with some desensitizing of alone time, doing short periods of time alone followed by rewards for good behavior and building up after that for his separation anxiety. Doesn't hurt to try. I was also advised to use a food with a lower protein content--kibbles, if you feed them, with a higher protein content can cause what looks like a higher level of anxiety in some dogs. Worked wonders for my grey. Good luck.

Benny is exercised first thing in the morning and a couple of times at night when we are home. On the weekend, a few more ball plays--that is his thing, ball plays. He seems fine with a morning and evening exercise time, but I enjoy, when I have time, to be outside with him a little more. When he's not playing, he doesn't require "attention"--what he really likes is just to be with me or, preferably, both of us, in the same room or the car. We don't take him everywhere--its too hot to take him in the car in the summer everywhere and too cold in the winter. But we take him from time to time if we are out just for a drive. Otherwise, he sleeps most of the time, or at least lays nearby and rests. And surely, he is plotting something during those quiet times...he is a border collie after all!

I have one border collie named Ben. He is red and white and about 5 1/2 years old. I stumbled onto Ben at the local shelter after looking in earnest for a breeder of border collies. There he was, right under my nose. When I adopted Ben, I had to wait about three weeks. He needed to be neutered and he was exposed to a virus in the shelter and they closed adoptions down for a week or so. He was surrendered, "because he wanted to spend too much time with us." Another woman was looking at him and wanted him, and was intending on him living outside, by himself. (She did not care for animals in the house). The shelter had to approve you, but it was a first come-first serve situation on adoption day. I showed up very early that cold winter day in March and waited. I was first in line. The other woman showed up too--she was not happy when she saw me, but the shelter staff (who were now accustomed to me, as I visited Ben every day at lunch for three weeks) cheered when I walked in. He's lying under my feet right now, all 45 hairy, neurotic pounds of him. We love him very much. Hopefully, he never gives us up for wanting to spend too much time with him

Really, I do not know--but I wanted to say he is very beautiful. I love the old guys.

We got Bennie from the humane society--and yes, he has some typical BC issues, he's a bit neurotic. By and large, however, he is really one of the best dogs we have ever had.

Bennie comes up to bed with his dad, usually between 11 and midnight. He's up with me between 4:30 and 5. Weekends we sleep in til 5:30 or 6.

I had done a lot of reading about border collies before I adopted Ben and was very concerned about this. Ben was 2.5 when we adopted him and I had no idea what habits he did or did not form. Our road is rural and not busy, but I don't want to take any chances. As soon as he came home, I started training the command "leave it" in the house with things I knew he liked (like cheese)--and then rewarded him when it was clear he knew what was expected. I then leashed him daily and stood by the road, and waited for cars--trained "leave it" with the same reward. I am sure others will have been advice, but that has worked for us and we still use this command 3 years later and will continue to--handy one to teach!
