  1. You took the words right out of my mouth. The same thing is happening to me. My BC puppy is going on 12 weeks, and he has been doing it for the last couple weeks (when I first started trying to take him on walks). He refuses to leave the yard unless he is picked up, but once far enough away from the house he'll walk a little, but usually still requires another pickup or two. But when heading back towards the house he runs, just like yours. The only "easy" way to get him to walk is if my girlfriend walks her dog with us, then he's usually okay. My guess is that this will just take time. But if someone has a better solution I would love to hear it.
  2. Okay. Thanks for the explanation. Maybe I'll get some Canidae All Life Stages next. I just started a 50lb of the Wellness puppy, so I'll use that first. My pup is currently 12 weeks old.
  3. I read on www.dogfoodanalysis.com that Wellness Core has too much protein for puppies. So I was going to use Wellness Puppy until 1 year of age. That is what they recommend and that is their only available option if you use Wellness exclusively for the life of the dog. You're saying I'll need to switch to an All-Life-Stages food until he's old enough for Wellness Core?
  4. Very interesting subject matter. Her background on how she got into science makes me think about going back to school. Thanks for the post.
  5. From my limited experience, they will grow cautious with age--especially things they aren't socialized to at that age. So I recommend using that boldness to introduce Panda to as many new experiences as possible that way YOU will be able to morph the pup into the adult you desire. Congrats on the new pup!
  6. Wow. I thought some of the service dog socialization lists I've seen were extensive. I think you win. I didn't think about Lowes and Home Depot. I guess they are pet-friendly--or at least pet-indifferent as long as the pup stays out of the way? With winter around the corner, it may be a little harder to find skate boards, people out walking, and such, but I'm looking forward to finding all sorts of things to expose him too. This is going to be fun! Thanks for reply.
  7. I'm getting a new puppy in a couple weeks and have read a good deal about the importance of socialization at a young age. I know puppies training to be service dogs are carried into grocery stores, etc. I'm not trying to raise a service dog, per se, but I would like like my dog to have that level of comfort so that he can go with me as much as possible. What do you think? Should I get a baby sling and throw the pup in there when I go to the grocery store, or am I crazy? (Though if you have an alternative to a baby sling that is more manly, let me know
  8. I'm getting a puppy in a couple weeks and would like to know your thoughts on insurance. What do you have? If you don't have insurance for your pet, why did you decide insurance wasn't worth it? I've heard of Banfield, which sounds pretty good if you can find a banfield vet near you. I've heard it covers all regular treatment (vaccines, etc.) + 10% off everything else for like $220 or so a year. http://www.banfield.net/optimum-wellness-plans-puppies Then there is VPI which seems to be a well known one, but their plans are more expensive. Ideally, I'd like something to cover regular vaccines etc. plus something for high-priced emergencies.
  9. A pan to hold it not a bad idea. I saw one container I liked that had a tall lip all around it except the entrance, which required the dog to get inside to use it instead of just going on the edge, e.g., two paws in and two paws out.
  10. Wow. That's cheap. The sod patches people try to sell online for dog potties are WAY over priced--like $30+ for 3' x 3'. Thanks. Looks like I'm using sod.
  11. I like this idea. Instead of partitioning the crate using the divider, I can just put the sod on one side. I'll check out Home Depot. I wonder how expensive it is.. My only concern with sod is digging, but hopefully that will be manageable with a young pup.
  12. Baby Einstein will be ready to come home in less than a month. I'll be taking off of work for the first week I have him, but after that I'll be at work 9 to 5 with a dog walker that will come around noon. My question is, has anyone tried using one of those indoor grass areas to teach dog's to go potty? I'm thinking of building my own. I know the ideal situation is to just use the crate/kennel when not there and that paper training or potty pads create confusion. But until he is 3 to 4 months old, he won't be able to hold it long enough (4 hours) until the dog walker arrives.
